A Mother’s Cry – Poem by Vinni
I love you immensely, my dear son.
I thank you for your friendship.
When I place my first steps at the entrance to my old age,
I struggle to balance and stand straight.
Have a little patience with me, and please understand my dilemma.
Don’t show faces at my old age!
With my shaky hands, have I spilled food while eating?
Don’t scream at me!
Remember your younger days and how kind I was,
when you were struggling to eat or drink.
Use no harsh words on me!
Am I refusing to shower or to bathe?
Don’t call me lazy!
Can you try the same tricks and kind words, I used,
while I tried to bathe you?
Am I repeating the same old stories again and again like a broken record?
Don’t be frustrated with me!
Remember the same nursery rhyme “Row, Row, Row a boat….”,
that I patiently repeated hundreds of times when you were a child
and the same old stories I read for you again and again at your request.
Don’t lose your patience with me!
Am I struggling and dirtied while changing my clothes?
Don’t be angry with me!
Remember the days I cleaned your dirty linen when you soiled them?
It is hard for me to understand the modern technology
and new techniques at your lightning speed.
Don’t insult me, teach me!
Give me time to observe and learn!
I cannot drive as I lost my ability to do so.
Don’t refuse to take me out to visit my friends and relatives!
Remember the days I taught you driving when you were 16?
In future,
sometimes, due to my confused state of mind,
my memories and conversation may break
Don’t leave me alone saying you have lots of work to do.
Find some time and sit next to me and pacify me and make me relax.
When my legs cheat me to walk, please help me!
I remember how I stretched my fingers to help you learn to take your first steps
One day, I will tell you “I have lived enough,
and there is no meaning in living after certain age”.
You will understand this when your time comes.
All that I need from you now is your smile with an understanding.
My dear son, I love you a lot!
Will you try to help me finish my life peacefully by your side?
Don’t leave me alone in a senior home with strangers!
I need your company and your hugs.
Your loving mom
