Intro: In this article you will learn about Jamestown. The subtopics are Establishment, Geography, Life In Jamestown, and Impact On First People. It will teach you all about Jamestown’s history. It will teach you how it was founded where it was located, what is there, which people where there and more.
Establishment; The Jamestown colony was first founded on May 14, 1607. It was founded by the Virginia company of London. In addition, the whole reason it was founded is because it had to make money for the Virginia company. Jamestown was England’s first permanent settlement in the new world. To support that, in the article “The Virginia Company of London” it states that “The goal of the Virginia company was clear enough: establish a permanent colony in America. That would make a profit for the company”. Jamestown earned money by selling their most important crop tabaco. This is the establishment of Jamestown.
Geography: Jamestown is located near present day Williamsburg, Virginia. The weather in Jamestown is too hot in summer and too cold in winter the weather was also mostly stormy. To support that, Joy Hakim in her article Jamestown Challenges states that “The land was swampy, the drinking water was bad; it was hot in the summer and bone chilling in the winter. The mosquitoes drove the settlers crazy and carried malaria germs.” The two biggest swamps in Jamestown were the Pitch and Tar swamp and the Passmore swamp.” Therefore, the James river was big and deep. It is the longest river in Virginia and the 12th longest river in the United States. In contrast to swampy lands, Jamestown had land that was suitable to grow a variety of fresh produce. Many crops grew in Jamestown such as, rice, corn, wheat, sassafras, squash, and tomatoes. Jamestown also grew fruits like apples, peaches and berries. Interestingly, the most common crop of all was the tabaco. Many animals lived in Jamestown’s forests such as, deer, moose, rabbit, skunk, and beaver. In addition, insects such as, fly’s mosquitoes, and flea’s thrived due to swamps and spread diseases like scurvy and typhoid. Jamestown was full of great nature and animals.
Life in Jamestown: Life in Jamestown was not so great. Almost everyday people like indentured servants and enslaved people died. Slavery and indentured servitude were big things back then. An indentured servant had to work only for a couple of years. But they were still treated badly. On the other hand, an enslaved person worked as a slave all their lives. Many English settlers became slaves. Most indentured servants and enslaved Africans died. They did not live too long. They did not have a good life mostly enslaved Africans they did not get any good in life. Colonists were killed by Powhatan’s and settlers. Life in Jamestown was bad and good. But it was bad for all enslaved Africans and indentured servants. Today there is no such thing as slavery. Or indentured servitude. Many people starved to death because they ran out of food. Settlers were not allowed to grow crops or own land. The Powhatans had shared and traded with them. The water was not clean people who drank it would get very sick. Settlers had brought sicknesses to Jamestown which people such as the Powhatan’s and colonists caught. Jamestown was a place full of good and bad things but there were not very good things happening in those times at Jamestown.
These are some facts about Jamestown.
Impact on The First People: The Powhatans were treated badly by settlers. Settlers stole their land, food, clothing, tools, and shelter. Shortly after Powhatans daughter Pocahontas was stolen by the settlers. The settlers had war with the Powhatans. Powhatan died and so did Pocahontas. Powhatans brother took over. Soon the settlers had stopped raiding and kidnaping. Then they disappeared. This was the impact on the first people.
Conclusion: This article is all about Jamestown’s history. I hope you learned all about Establishment, Geography, Life in Jamestown, and Impact on First People. Now you know some facts about Jamestown. Where is Jamestown located? When was it founded? That is what this article is all about Jamestown.
