SHIFTING SANDS
Born 1955, F, from London, United KingdomSHIFTING SANDS
You understand, don't you
that I no longer do,
But my eyes smile just the same,
yet I can't recall your name.
Have I met you before,
How much do you know,
How long will you stay,
And why don't you go?
You understand, don't you
that I no longer do,
Yet I feed and sleep and eat
just as you do.
My bed is not my own
that much is true,
The nurses come, they go
some old, some new.
You understand, don't you
that I no longer do,
Unlearning every day
The narrowing of my view.
When you have gone from here
Your memory intact,
Write on a card my name
and send it back.

Help Us Understand What's Happening

08/10/2020This is heart wrenching but so true. I lost both my parents to Dementia and it is the saddest thing ever to watch highly intelligent people disappearing before your eyes. I was very lucky because they both 'knew' me to the very end.

08/10/2020So many of us carry a sadness every waking hour: for others, or for ourselves. I am very sorry for your loss Kristin. i don't want to fall into cliches, so will finish there. Keep writing and fill your days with good memories if you can. Thank you for responding to my poem.

08/06/2020I lost my father to this terrible disease, and it is heart wrenching to watch someone you love fade away, and see how difficult it is for them as well, and not be able to do anything to help the situation. I think you did a beautiful job of reminding us to be understanding of those who are experiencing memory loss, and to remember that they are still there, even if their memory has faded. Thank you, Jane!
