A Broken Charm
Born 1988, M, from Biratnagar, NepalThe phone rings!
Attendee: Hello, Helpline Counseling Service. How may I help you?
Rita: I need an appointment. Dr. Keshav, please.
Attendee: Next month, Monday, 2p.m. Will that be okay ma'am?
Rita: No! That is still a few weeks from now.
Attendee: Sorry ma'am, his appointments are full. He’s heavily scheduled till then, at least for now.
However, I can manage Dr. Shreyashi for you.
Rita: Can I meet her in a few hours?
Attendee: You will have to wait at least 10 days, ma'am. She is heavily scheduled as well.
Rita: No, I want a counselor now.
Attendee: Ma'am, I am sorry, you'll have to wait. Do you want me to book an appointment at an available time?
Rita hangs the phone.
Rita lives alone at her 3 room apartment in Mid-Baneshwor and suffers from severe depression which stays mild at day and takes a height mostly at night. She has developed a syndrome of fear with darkness. Around people she behaves normal but when all by herself, she gets clouded by depressive thoughts.

08/15/2020Very sobering and impactful writing Aciis. I really like that it's presented as a screen play and a heartbreaking one at that. : )

08/14/2020I sincerely hope this is not how it works in the real world. When people need help they need it immediately not in the future.
Good story line and highlights the need for hotlines when and if needed.
Well done :-)

08/16/2020Both physical and Mental emergencies should be given equal priorities. One gets immediate attention while the other doesn't. There has been quite a rise in suicide rate during lock down in Nepal and this story was born out of the scenario. Thank you dear Gail for showing some concern towards my work and the message behind it.

08/13/2020There should be 'crisis hotline's' that people can call when they really are desperate to talk to someone. I imagine that very depressed people in need often do not make it to scheduled appointment times, and that is really a tragedy.
