Part one
I woke up and all I could see was a brilliant white. I was very confused and when I made a move to get up I saw that my hands and feet were in shackles. The chain connecting them to the wall was just long enough for my arms to reach around in any direction. As I was testing the durability of the chains I spotted something shiny out of the corner of my eye. When I turned to examine it I realized it was a key! I went to grab it and as my finger brushed it, it moved just slightly and out of my reach. I groaned as I realized that the only way to get the key was a very awkward position where my arm was reaching out almost too far and trying to clutch the key in my fingertips. As I was finally getting to the key it made another jerky move, but I was prepared this time and held it tighter than ever. As I was unlocking my handcuffs a small piece of paper fell out with the numbers 347. At first I was confused, but as I was looking around the room I saw a slight ripple in one of the walls. I understood immediately. I practically ran to the covering and tore it off. What I saw under it wasn’t what I wanted, but was helpful. As I was feeling around it I felt a small code pad and so I typed the numbers 347 into it and the box opened. Inside there was a single note saying, “look everywhere, leave no trace.” Again I was immensely confused and started checking the walls and under the cot. Just as I was on the verge of giving up I saw a lump under the blanket on the cot. When I went to straighten it out I saw a phone drop under the cot. I hurried and grabbed it immediately and tried to open it. Since it needed a password I tried 347, it didn’t work. After that fail I tried every combination of those three numbers there was. Finally the combination 473 worked. When the phone opened the texting app was on; I typed the numbers 347 in and hoped that wouldt work. As I was impatiently waiting I looked at the clock. I was surprised to see that it was very early in the morning. As I finished looking at the clock the alert went off that I got a text. I skipped back to the app very excited, but was disappointed when the text only said, “Congrats on getting to this point! 1543” I figured it was a joke and kept looking around the room this time also feeling the walls. As I was feeling around the walls I had time to think and I realized I couldn’t remember any major details about my life. For example I couldn’t tell anyone my name, birthday, or even my hometown! As I was thinking about that though I subconsciously stopped on one part of a wall where I could feel a covering. I again tore off the covering, paying no attention to the first note and saw one of the most amazing things I could think of at that moment. It was a door! I immediately analyzed it and realized I had to type in a code. I remember the text and saw that it was not a joke. I punched in the numbers 1543 in and tried to open the door. It beeped at me and I realized there weren't enough numbers. I added 347 to the end of the code and tried again. This time it worked and the door swung wide open!
Part Two
As I walked out of the room I was wondering what my name was. I decided that I should ask someone when I went outside. As I was making my way towards the door a couple walked up to me and the woman exclaimed happily, “Angi! You’re finally awake. How are you feeling.” As she finished talking she looked a little worried. When she was done talking I also concluded that she was my mom. As we were driving home I started talking about the white room, as I was talking they seemed very intrigued and listened very intently. When I was done with my story we were pulling into the driveway. As we walked up the short path to the house I realized I still couldn’t remember anything. I asked my mom to show me my room and anything else I might need. In return she gave me a full tour of the house and showed me to my room. She then suggested that I should change. I looked down and realized I really did need to. As I was about to walk into my room I heard the front door open and my dad greeting people. When I got into my room and started changing I heard the beginnings of an argument start downstairs. I put on my clothes as fast as I could and hurried down the stairs. When I was about to turn the corner to get into the kitchen I heard my mom say, “You can not do anything to set her off though.” After she said that I walked into the kitchen and mom turned to me and looked mildly surprised saying, “We were just about to send dad up to get you. Our friends are here for dinner.” When she mentioned that her friends were here I looked around and saw a young couple sitting at the counter. I looked intently at them and thought I recognized the woman. They looked thoughtfully back at me and I realized I was staring. I directed my gaze down and held out my hand saying, “ Hi I'm Angi. What are your names?” The woman shook my hand and said, “I’m Angel and this is my husband Jax.” She gestured to the man sitting next to her. As everyone was eating I started talking with Angel and we found out we have a lot in common. We connected really well and by the time we were done talking it was well past the time I was supposed to go to bed. As we said our goodbyes Angel hugged me.
Part three
I thought about that a bunch as I was trying to sleep. When I finally drifted off I dreamt that something was really wrong and I was panicking really badly. When everything seemed to be completely falling apart and there was no hope left Angel appeared and held her arms out to me. I ran into her arms and hugged her tightly. After that everything seemed good again. That’s where the dream ended. When I woke up I was very confused and as I lifted my head up to check the time I saw that I had slept in really late! I quickly changed out of my pajamas and hurried down the stairs. When I got into the kitchen I saw my parents. I said good morning and asked if I could have a tour of the neighborhood. Mom agreed to take me around while Dad stayed at home. As Mom and I were walking down the street she pointed to all the houses and told me the names and ages of the people who live there. I learned that Angel lived two doors down from us and there were four kids on our street. After we finished looking at the houses, and talking to a few people, we went to a park. At the park we sat down and talked for a bit. I told my mom about my dream. When I finished she looked worried, like she was going to get in trouble or something. The look on her face changed from that to calm almost instantly, but I definitely knew something was amiss. After we sat in silence for another minute she saw someone over my shoulder and called them over. It was a girl my age and when she saw me her face lit up with joy. She practically screamed with delight, “Angi! You're finally back!” Her eyes darted to my mom almost instantly when she saw I didn’t recognize her. And then she said in a more serious voice, “Is there something wrong I don’t think Angi recognizes me.” I then spoke up trying to revive the mood, “I may not recognize you, but your level of concern tells me that you are one of my friends if not one of my best friends.” The girl looked at me with tears in her eyes and hugged me tightly. She then said, “You’re the best friend ever. My name’s Rose.” I hugged her back and said, “Can you let me go before my ribs all crack.” Rose laughed and let go. She then asked if I could come over to her house. I looked at my mom pleadingly and she said that I could and that it would be good for me.
Part four
As Rose and I were walking to her house she brought up the topic of school. When we were talking I suddenly remembered a single face. It was a boy with fair skin and blue eyes with dirty blond hair. As the memory hit and faded we approached Rose’s house. As we went into her room I asked if I could see the last yearbook that she had. She looked confused, but didn’t ask and got me the yearbook. As I was flipping through the pages I found my class and I was surprised at how small it was with only 30 students in the entire grade. When I was looking at my classmates I saw the boy and asked Rose who he was. She looked at me in shock and said in a slightly amused voice, “That’s James the boy you’ve had a crush on forever!” I don’t know why, but I started laughing like crazy. Rose looked at me as if I was crazy and just shook her head frowning. Before I stopped laughing Rose muttered under her breath, “They really did wipe your memory.” I was immensely confused, but attempted to hide it by asking, “What should we do now?” She suggested playing some games and I agreed. We played a whole bunch of Battleship and after we were tired of that it was time for me to go. Rose offered to walk with me and I thought that was a great idea considering I couldn’t remember how to get to my house anyway. When we were walking to my house I kept wondering about who Rose was talking about when she said ‘they’ wiped my memory. I was about to ask when she broke the silence exclaiming happily, “See you tomorrow Angi! Have a good evening.” When she said this I looked up and saw my house looming in front of me. At that moment I had a strange feeling that I should run away. I squashed the urge, but wasn’t quite ready to walk in so I hugged Rose tightly and said, “See you tomorrow.”
Part five
After I hugged Rose I had the urge again to run away, but paying no attention to it I walked into my house. My mom greeted me in the front room and she asked what I wanted for dinner. That’s when I realized just how long I was at Rose’s house. I didn’t really care what we had for dinner and after I expressed that to my mom I started up the stairs to my room. Before I was two steps up the stairs though mom called me to the kitchen to help with dinner. I groaned and made my way back to the kitchen. As I walked in I asked my mom what she decided to have for dinner. She answered saying, “Pancakes and fruit salad.” I smiled as I remembered that being one of my favorite meals. As we were preparing the meal I started to think about everything that had happened since the white escape room. Then a thought came to me: what if this is all a game. It mostly made sense and it explained all the slight details that hadn't made sense before, the notes in the room, my feelings about Angel, and Rose’s comment. I wanted to linger over that thought longer, but as I got to thinking about details mom pulled me out of my train of thought saying that dinner was ready. After dinner I went straight to my room to continue thinking about my game theory. As I was thinking I drifted off to sleep and had the same dream as the first night back in my room. It was where the world felt like it was falling apart and then Angel came and fixed it again.
Part six
When I woke up I was confused again and tried to make sense of things, but before I could mom came in announcing that it was time to get ready for school. I had forgotten all about school until now! I hurried and tried to do everything that I needed to do and then I ran out the door without thinking. I stood out on the street for a second before I realized that I didn’t remember how to get to school. I walked back into the house and asked mom if she could drive me to school. She laughed and said, “Sure.” As we arrived at the school mom told me that I was in classroom 15 and that Rose was in my class and could help me find everything else I need. I said thanks and then walked around trying to find classroom 15. Luckily I found it just fine and Rose was sitting in class as I walked in. She called me over and I sat next to her. She then told me all about my classmates and our friend group. As she finished the bell rang to start school. All our classes seemed to go on forever until it was finally the end of the day. All day I had mostly followed Rose around and she didn’t oppose it and helped me several times when I forgot teachers’ names. At the end of the day I had finally reached a semi-conclusion about what to do about the game theory I had been working on all day.
Part seven
I decided I should ask Angel about it. I went home first and finished all my homework at lightning speed and then asked to go to Angel’s house. My mom said that was fine and then told me to be home by dinner time. I then ran to Angel’s house and knocked impatiently, she opened the door and invited me in. I then walked in and everything was strangely familiar. Then almost on their own my feet started moving. I walked around for a bit and I stopped in front of a locked room. I looked to Angel and then just blurted out my theory on my life being a game. She looked at me and looked like she was about to cry. Then she just looked astonished and said, “How did you figure that all out? It’s only been three days.” I looked at her thinking and then asked, “Are you my mom for real though?” Angel laughed and said, “I promise that I am and I can tell you anything you need to know.” I just hugged her for what seemed like an eternity.
Conclusion (with an explanation)
The government needed test subjects for a new machine that is used to ‘clean’ people’s minds. When they were trying to find people that were willing to help an idea came up. What if we made this a game. It was a popular idea and so the plan was put in action. First kids and their families who were willing to play were gathered up and told the plan. Second the child who wanted to play had their memory completely wiped and then they were put in an escape room. Finally the child was given periodic hints to see how fast they realized they were in a game. There were only five children allowed to play and the fastest to figure it all out would be awarded with a full ride scholarship and $10,000 dollars. By the way Angi won! :)
