Who stole the Sari?
Born 1988, M, from Biratnagar, Nepal.jpeg)
“So, who did it then?” asked the inspector in an angry voice. “How would I know?” said Pelco. “Me neither have any clue about it”, Bretton spoke as soon as Pelco was done speaking. The inspector seemed to be very angry because the magistrate was calling at frequent intervals and giving him a hard time.
“Inspector Bilbo, let us go, we are innocent, we did not steal the Sari of magistrate’s wife, please trust us”, cried both men at once. “But Binita saw you both stealing it while it was left to dry at the rooftop last night, is she lying? Do you take me for a man who believes anything that is said to him? That young lady works at the magistrate’s house as a caretaker, she won’t lie, or at least she won’t lie to me”, spoke Bilbo in a harsh tone.
“What would we do with a Sari? We aren’t even married”, said Pelco, and Bretton nodded his head in support of the statement given by his life-long friend. “Please sir, we are not guilty of this charge, we don’t even know where to sell a stolen Sari if we are to steal one” Pelco pledged.
“Oh, about that, we will soon know it, my two officers are on their way to the market where stolen items are sold for cheap, you know that place, don’t you THIEVES” said inspector Bilbo.
“We don’t know the place sir, but you and your officers quite seem to have some familiarity with the place” spoke Pelco in a low and careful tone. “What did you say?” shouted the inspector angrily. Upon seeing Bilbo’s face getting filled with rage Pelco immediately spoke in an attempt to calm down the angry officer. “I mean, Sir, you and your men handle a lot of cases, a lot of cases means a lot of thieves, which means a lot of investigations, which also means a lot of attempts to search the stolen items, which again means a lot of to and fro visits from the station to the thief’s market. it is a Sari now, may be it was a blouse the last time, a petticoat the week before, by the way, do you search men’s clothing as well, Bretton’s undergarment has gone missing since a week, or is your station responsible for solving the textile troubles of females only? I mean these feminist news on TV have given me a lot of confusion and on top of that I’m an illiterate fellow and so is my good friend Bretton so we don’t understand much”, explained Pelco.
“ENOUGH of your nonsense”, Bilbo spills his frustration filled anger and he further threatens both men to imprison them immediately without any investigation if they were to make him anymore angry.
Since it was a hot day with no electricity, all three men were outside in the front yard of the police station.
During the interrogation, Bilbo was leaning against the desk while the two accused were seated on chairs opposite of the inspector. “I need that Sari, tell me quickly where it is right this moment”, another angry sentence makes its way out of Bilbo’s mouth. Upon hearing the inspector speak, Lunisa, a lady who used to live nearby the station, who was returning from the weekly market after buying herself necessary groceries for a week, spoke intrudingly, “Why do you need a Sari, officer? You are a male, however, if you are in a dire need, I can sell you my extra piece which I got in a buy one get one fair, but manage the blouse and the petticoat at your own and please do not trouble these fine young men, I see you are making a mistake.”
Upon hearing her speak, hairs at the back of Bilbo’s neck stood up, his nose and his cheeks turned dark red, his eyes wide open-blazing fury, the tip of his ears-red, he was almost at a state of eruption, but just to preserve his public image and to show he is unaffected of her comment, Bilbo somehow controlled his emotions, smiled at the lady and nodded his head once. The lady did not care much and walked ahead.
While all of this was unfolding in front of the station building inside the police compound, a constable came running towards the officer “Sir, the magistrate has called again and would like to speak to you at once” A frustrated Bilbo took unwilling steps inside the station.
After the inspector was finished talking, he came outside in much fury. “Okay, I know how to handle situations like this, have you thought less of me, let me show you”, said Bilbo. The two men who were accused of stealing an expensive Sari of the wife of local magistrate were succumbed by fear. “Sir, we are innocent and we have that thing, what is it called Bretton, that thing, oh my god, that word is on the tip of my tongue but I can’t speak it out, we have, oh yes, HUMAN RIGHTS, we are humans and we have human rights”, said Pelco.
The inspector burst into laughter upon hearing him speak. “Human rights, huh, where did you learn about it?” spoke inspector Bilbo in a humiliating tone. “Well, officer, Sir! I watch news, you know, on the TV they talk about it all the time”, explained Pelco in a polite manner.
Right that moment, Binita, the young petite who worked at the magistrate’s home, came running inside the police compound and upon seeing inspector interrogating the men she stood still.
“Ah, Binita, what gave you such hurry?” asked Bilbo. “These men are innocent, officer”, said Binita.
“Are you sure? Earlier you were the one to tell me that you saw these men stealing the Sari.” “I did it!” “Yes, you did tell me, I am certain of it.” “No, I mean, I stole the Sari, it is such a piece, I had my eyes on it since the first day I saw Mrs. Magistrate wear it at a house function, I took the names of these men because I happened to see them strolling in the evening across the street which is nearby Magistrate’s house and I too know that these men were once caught selling fraudulent papers to some peasants for which they served a week in custody, our town isn’t that big, as you know people know one another, well almost, but because I have never committed any crime in my life I could not simply overcome my emotions which were telling me that I did wrong by putting two innocent men at the hands of trouble. Please forgive me officer and you too Mr. Pelco and Mr. Bretton, I beg of you, I have already kept the Sari inside Mrs. Magistrate’s closet and have prepared a little story to handle the case in the benefit of everyone.”
