The Race

The rays of the August morning Sun fell on my face and woke me up. What day is it? Oh.. It is Saturday. I immediately got up and sat on the bed. I look forward to Saturday mornings. Regular school days, Saturday mornings are the laziest of the mornings. After a full week of hectic school, family movie or game night on Fridays, I like to sleep in on Saturday mornings. But the summer Saturdays are just the opposite, especially with Covid.

As I brushed and changed my clothes, my mom had kept my milk ready.
“Finish your milk and wear your shoes. Don’t forget to take your mask”, she said as she was filling up the water bottle.

It was a short drive from our house to my friend Jasmine’s house which is up on the hill. When we reached her house, Jasmine and her mom were waiting for us.

We started our hike enjoying the morning beauty, the new plants and flower blossoms since last week. There are just a few people on the trail today, may be a good chance for me and Jasmine to have a short race.

I started to plan my race with Jasmine. Every Saturday when we go for the hike, I and Jasmine, like to run, chase and sometimes have a short race. She is much younger than me, but she almost always wins. I was planning some strategy, how to beat her today.

We reached a place where the trail was a little broad and there was no one else on the trail. This would be a perfect place for the race, I thought.
I asked Jasmine’s mom, “Can we have a short race here ?“.
“Oh.. Yes, of course”, replied Jasmine’s mom.

At the count of 3 by my mom, I started to run and Jasmine’s mom let her go.
I was really running fast at my maximum speed and suddenly, I heard the moms screaming, “Jazzy.. Jazzy..”
I was just a few feet away from the finish line that we had set , and I could feel that Jasmine was not anywhere closer to me, I ran and finished and when I turned back… What????

Jasmine was not even on the trail. She was running on the bushes on the side, chasing the deers.
Jazzy’s mom was screaming, “Jazzy.. No, Come here, Don’t go there.”
The deers are just too fast for the dog, they ran and went out of our site.

A little upset Jazzy came back, lymping with the thorns from the bushes on her paws.
“what have you done Jazzie, you are not even able to walk now”, her mom was scolding her taking out the thorns from her fur and paws.
