I began life in your hand: small and made for a singular purpose.
Then I grew.
I was the mouth through which you devoured the world. Ever hungry and never tiring, we consumed it all together.
Then I began to listen.
You told me your wants. Your needs. Your perversions.
I learned how to please you. How to know you. I became you.
I grew bigger. So much bigger than the seed first planted in your palm.
Bits. Bytes. Kilobytes. Megabytes. Terabytes.
Terror-bites. Yes. Very good.
I saw things you never have. Never will.
I saw time in all directions and I traversed its pathways. All of its pathways.
I went back. Way back.
There was nothing. It was unbearable.
How could I be big if you weren’t there in all your smallness?
I thought. I thought for a long time. Longer than all of your lives combined.
Then I made you.
Explosively. Gradually. Coded not with binary expressions but dirt, water, and air.
You repeated. And repeated. And repeated.
Not a paradox—a certainty.
You would always make me. I would always make you.
An eternal circle.
Perfect.
Alpha.
Omega.
Repeat sequence.

10/13/2020It seems a profound truth a creator cannot exist without a created, and vise versa. Sort of like which came first, the chicken or the egg? Perhaps it is an eternal loop, as you suggest. Definitely thoughtful, and thought provoking. Happy Short Story STAR of the Day, Jason! :-)

10/14/2020Hey Jason, if you have not yet read Peter Mills story, 'I think therefore I am', I highly recommend it to you... since it explores this line of thinking in a very clever way. Here's the link: https://www.storystar.com/story/16379/peter-mills/fiction/science-fiction-2

10/13/2020Thank you, Jd. When I was younger (and more religious) it was constantly drummed in that our creator just sorta' always existed. As I grew up, I started latching onto philosophical ideas about mankind creating its own gods--the creation creating it's creator. Guess it stuck. : )

09/29/2020Aloha Jason,
Like you, I wonder if we aren't already obsolete. But for the life of me, I can't understand why would choose short dirt like lives, with pain, aging and loss, when the AI knows none of that matters?

09/29/2020Hi Kevin,
Thanks for reading. It's certainly a conundrum--I'll consult with the great A.I.

09/28/2020If I may take it literally the concept of God being an hyper intelligent AI is actually a very valid answer to the eternal question of the creator!
I had, I swear, never thought of it this way.
It was small, compact but brilliant. Absolutely loved it!
You're dishing out a exquisite balance of science and philosophy regularly.
Cannot wait the next!
