It was ‘concert evening’ at the hotel in the mountains where the two Toy Bears Hercules and Bubblegum (H&B) lived. Once-a-week concert seating was set up in the hotel lounge during dinner, ready for the guests to attend after their dining. The Toy Bears were always located on the window seat in the same lounge room, except of course when they were busy on a mission. During concerts the Toy Bears were simply lifted onto knees of audience members who preferred to seat on the more comfortable window seats.
No-one thought it ‘silly’ to sit with Toy Bears on their knees, not even adult visitors. Well not quite anyone! The ‘Terrible Twins’ Tammy and Tommy though it completely ‘stupid and childish’ to sit with toys on their knees, at any time, not just during these ‘boring concerts’. Tammy and Tommy had of course played joyfully with all toys when they were a few years younger. In those years they had all manner of toys and had been thoroughly spoiled by their doting parents. But now they were ‘tough kids’ preparing themselves to be teenagers even if that was several years ahead for eight-year olds! Now they had to sit next to their parents during these ‘tedious, boring and silly’ concerts as the ‘Terrible Twins’ now named them – otherwise there would be no ice-cream in the afternoons.
That evening, a classical music quartet would be playing selected favorites. “All from the last millenium,” Tommy heard a couple of teenage guests saying to their other teenage friends. Tammy heard them say, “The music was from the ancient days before electric guitars and synthesizers”. Tammy and Tommy were hanging around with teenagers now because they were much more ‘grown up than other children of their own age’. “Obviously teenagers are older then us, what are they trying to say?” said Jenny of the eight-year old ‘Good Twins’ Jenny and Jerry, who were quite happy to be their own age. Jenny and Jerry liked music very much, and themselves were already quite good musicians of violin and flute. This was some contrast to Tammy and Tommy who were also quite good on their ‘modern kids’ instruments, electric guitar and drums.
That morning after breakfast, Tammy and Tommy were playing around with the electric guitars and synthesizers of the ‘Teenage Band’ that was to play in the buried bunker discotheque that evening, long after the classical concert. Tammy and Tommy were most surprised when two old men and an old woman wandered into the bunker. They were most surprised when these ‘ancients’ started playing spontaneous ‘cool modern music’ on drums, guitar and synthesizer. The ‘ancients’ found out that the eight-year olds Tammy and Tommy could play simple music on the modern instruments, enough for the ‘ancients’ to teach the ‘tough modern kids’ new routines for guitar and drums. Respect for the ‘ancients’ grew between Tammy and Tommy - who now realized that age was no hindrance to talent. These ‘ancient’ musicians looked as if they were falling apart, but their abilities were way ahead of the ‘Teenage Band’. “Wow”, sighed Tammy,” we thought you ‘old people’ could only play violins, cellos and pianos. We had no idea that you were also ‘grandparents of modern music’. One of the old musicians said, “Many of the top rock bands today consist of grandparents that have been at it since being teenagers, one has to start somewhere! The success is to keep going!” Another ancient musician said, “Upstairs in the hotel lounge we also have modern instruments out of sight of the classical audience. We could play there with you after lunch and before we go into the distant town to pick up our colleague, who will play with us at tonight’s classical concert.”
An hour after the end of lunch, when Tammy and Tommy wandered into the hotel lounge they were surprised to find Jerry and Jenny already rehearsing classical music pieces for violin and flute with the ‘ancient’ musicians. “Wow, they are really good, this Jenny and Jerry”, whispered Tammy to Tommy. “Don’t get too soft on the ‘Good Twins’”, replied Tommy to Tammy, “tough modern kids only play guitars and drums!” “Well at least the ‘ancients’ are cool, they can play everything”, responded Tammy, as one of the ‘ancients’ smiled at them. Tammy and Tommy had been sitting right next to the toy bears Hercules & Bubblegum, while they listened to the music lesson. Just then a music manuscript dropped out of the rucsac of Bubblegum the Toy Bear. It was entitled, ‘Quartet for violin, flute, electric guitar and drums by B. Bearot.’ Tommy picked it up, glanced at it and commented, “Wow this is well written, even I can read the music notes!”
Jenny and Jerry finished their music lesson with the ‘ancients’ who now switched instruments to give lessons to Tommy and Tammy. That lesson was also a great success and one could almost imagine that the toy bears were also applauding with Jenny and Jerry as the others finished their playing. The ‘ancients’ went off to town in the hotel minibus to pick up their colleague for this evening’s concert.
There was a buzz at dinner-time, at least among classical music lovers. Afterwards everybody from the dining room filed up towards the lounge for the classical concert -except for the ‘Teenage Band’ who excused themselves with the excuse that they had to rehearse for their show later in the buried bunker! Everyone took their seats, Jerry and Jenny together on the window seat next to the toy bears H&B; and also would you believe it? - they were joined by Tammy and Tommy! Something must have changed in the ‘Terrible Twins’, for Tammy and Tommy picked up the toy bears and seated Hercules and Bubblegum in their laps! The buzz in the hotel lounge among the audience got louder and louder, until the Hotel Manager came into the room to make an announcement!
“Dear guests,” apologized the Hotel Manager, “we appear to have a slight delay with our classical musicians. They went to town to pick up their fourth member and the minibus had broken down!” He hesitantly asked further, “Do any members of the audience wish to play their instruments during the wait?” The parents of Jenny and Jerry encouraged their Twins to offer to play their classical instruments, and the two stood up and went to the small music stage. The parents of Tammy and Tommy gulped with embarrassment, as the ‘Terrible Twins’ got up to offer to play their ‘horribly noisy instruments’. During this reorganization, none of the audience seemed to notice that all of the Hotel Toys, House Pets and Guest Pets had appeared in the lounge - as if having heard some secret announcement. No one notice that H&B were no longer sitting on the window seat, and some smart observer might have seen them disappearing behind the Japanese screen in the corner, where the musicians kept their spare instruments.
Out nowhere came the unexpected - a fabulous Quartet played on flute, violin, electric guitar and drums, played by the two sets of Twins. The audience was enthralled and the applause lasted for ages. Most people would not see that the Toys and Pets were applauding too, because most people don’t believe that the impossible can ever happen!
The classical musicians had just returned and were among the loudest applauders in the audience. The newly arrived musician was introduced as a ‘player most famous’. He said, “Dear Audience you may not have heard that piece before, but among most musicians it has become very famous. The Quartet by ‘Bubblegum Bearot’ is one of the fabulous new pieces to combine classical and modern instruments! We musicians are deeply honored to hear it so well played by the Twins and Twins.
The father parents of Jenny and Jerry complemented the parents of Tammy and Tommy and commented, “It was very interesting that even when our Twins and your Twins paused in the music, that the music went on unpaused!” “Yes I noticed that too!” replied the mother of Tammy and Tommy, “the music seemed to come from behind that Japanese screen over there,” as she pointed across the room.
The four parents went to look behind the Japanese screen and were astonished to see five immobile toys sitting on chairs in front of music note-stands; Hercules on guitar, Badger on drums, Giraffe on flute and Monkey on violin – with Bubblegum holding the conductors baton in front of the Quartet.
Make out this whatever you wish, but the parents of the Twins and Twins seemed to have joined the ‘Family of the Special Friends’ of Hotel Toys and Pets. We think this because they emerged from behind the Japanese Screen carrying the musical toys back to the window seat, with knowing smiles on their faces.
Well, Dear Listeners! Enjoy the rest of your evening!
