-Mama, why don't the prickly green trees lose their leaves in the fall?
-Let me tell you the tale of the grass and the gods…
Once upon a time there lived a small blade of grass named Gigi. Gigi was part of a very large group of other small blades of grass. In the summer, Gigi and her family would grow large from the bright sun, warm weather, and abundant water, but once fall came, they began to lose their life force. They lived in the darkness of the trees. Gigi could feel herself grow weaker and weaker with the lack of sunlight. She looked around, twisting her weak body to look at her family members who were laying down to rest, shivering from the cold. Gigi looked up, twisting her weak body once more to see the big trees above her sucking up all the sunlight to grow even bigger. Gigi said enough was enough, she was going to ask the gods for help.
She yelled up with all her might “Gods I need your help, please listen to my plee!” The first to respond was the Sun Goddess. Gigi asked for more sun so that her family would never be cold or tired. The goddess said no, she didn't want to burn the trees with too much of her heat. So Gigi asked, “Then who can help me?” The goddess told her to speak to the Water Goddess. Gigi called to the Water Goddess and asked for more water, so that her family would never be thirsty. The goddess said no, she didn't want to flood the trees with too much liquid. So Gigi asked, “Then who can help me?” The goddess told her to speak to the Earth Goddess. Gigi called to the Earth Goddess and asked for better soil, so that her family would never be hungry. The goddess said no, she didn't want to take any nutrients away from the trees. Gigi asked, “Then who can help me?” The goddess told her to speak to the Sun Goddess, who already said that she couldn't help Gigi. Gigi became really sad, could nobody help her and her family? Gigi was scared and cold and tired, but she was willing to try one last time. She WOULD help her family.
Despite her fear of the evil, dark, gigantic trees, Gigi looked up at them and yelled with all her might “Trees, speak to me!” The trees responded, “Why have you disturbed our slumber?!” Gigi screamed back up “Because my family is dying because NONE of you will share! You take all the soil, you take all the sun, you take all the water, and you leave us no place to grow!” The Tree Goddess awoke after all the commotion. She whispered down to the grassy field where Gigi lived, “Well, all you had to do was ask.” Then to the trees she said “Lose your leaves when it gets cold so that the lives beneath us do not get crumbled in our passing.” Most of the trees decided to lose their leaves, and for a week there were festivities among the trees and grass alike. At the end of the week, all the trees next to Gigi's family were bare. Except for one.
The tree was very old, and very angry “Why should I have to lose my leaves, and share my energy, water, soil, and sunlight with those puny specimens?! While all of you have no leaves, I will be able to grow and become the biggest tree yet!” The Wind Goddess who had joined in for the festivities calmly explained to the tree, “Share your leaves every Fall like the rest of the trees. Don’t choose to be alone ” The tree yelled back “I am not afraid of you!” Then the Wind Goddess transformed back into her gaseous state and whipped around the selfish tree and shaped it into a cone, so that forever it would always take the least space and sun. Her freezing wind whipped around the tree so quickly that icicles formed upon its branches. The Wind Goddess reverted back to her calm state and said to the tree “May you be bewitched forever for not helping these poor families of grass.” The leaves on the tree divided and turned into little spines, so angry at its transformation.
Years later, long flowing, healthy Gigi remarked that the branches of the selfish tree had begun to turn upwards towards the sun, perhaps to ask for forgiveness and to try and melt away the iciness and return back to its brothers and sisters.
-And that, my dear is why deciduous trees shed their leaves in the fall. And coniferous trees choose to keep them.
