The Five Cabbages?

By Esther Oldham

There were one five cabbages growing in a garden. Billie, Bob, beaver, boxly, and Joe. All of them perfectly normal and magnificently green.

But as time wore on and they began to ripen, and get big, little Joey was no longer turning a dark green but a dark orange. The other cabbages who were getting greener and greener did not like this and thought it was weird to have an orange cabbage in the garden, and they started to tease poor little Joey for it.

“Who’s going to want an orange cabbage?” Snickered Beaver. And the other cabbages laughed along with him.

Joe paid no heed to them and said. “You’ll see, one day I’ll be the best cabbage around. People will be lining up just to buy me.

But the cabbages just laughed and continued to make fun of him.

A month went by and Joey continued to grow bigger and more orange. The other cabbages had already stopped growing but not Joey. He was nearing the size of a horse. The other cabbages still made fun of his size and color.

Joey started to worry the other cabbages were right. After all, who would want a fat orange cabbage?

When October rolled around it was finally time to be picked and sold into the market. The farmer had to have five big guys just to lift Joey into the truck. The other four cabbages were no problem and were loaded up in no time.

The market was a wild place to be!! Bob was in a frenzy trying to see everything. But Joey, ashamed of how orange and big he was, tried to hide and make himself as small as possible. He tried not to look at anything or anyone, but then out of the corner of his eye, he saw something Orange. He looked over and saw an orange cabbage just like him! Then he saw another one! There were lots and lots of them. None as big as him of course, but it made Joey feel proud and he stood a little taller no longer so ashamed as himself as he once was.

A human man then came over. All of the green cabbages started to shout, “pick me! Pick me!” But the man asked the farmer a very strange question, at least in Joe's eyes. It was this:

“How much for the giant pumpkin?”
Joey wondered what on earth was a pumpkin? The farmer replied
“60 dollars.” The man smiled and said, “deal.”
Wow thought Joey, whoever this pumpkin is, is one lucky guy. But then the man came over with five human boys and they loaded him up into the truck. It was the best day of Joey's life.

The other cabbages were crying and saying not fair! They were never sold.

On the last day of October, Joey was given a face. He was put outside where he watched many creatures who pointed at him. But they weren’t doing it to tease him, instead they were saying how cool he looked and grand.

Never had there been a better jack o lantern in history.
