The foreign night
F, from Toronto, CanadaIt all started in winter. The sun had finally woken from its slumber and spread its wings at last. I longed for spring and now it was finally here. The sun shone through the window leaving my room with sun rays and black striped shadows. The blanket of arctic packed snow covering the grounds was beginning to melt,.The snow was gleaming and glistening beautifully under the bright and florid sun. The sky that once looked gray and somber changed into a majestic, rich sky blue. The trees were still, and the branches were beginning to rise as the snow descended. I cracked open the window, took a deep breath, and felt the icy crisp air fill my lungs in coolness. I couldn't help but smile because I felt like the universe was giving me a sign to embrace today. I wanted to live life at that moment. I felt like nothing could stop me and so I messaged my friends that I wanted to go to my very first party after all.
The girl who had the world in the palm of her hands and stars in her eyes was back once again.
*An hour later
I was outside waiting for my friends. I was shaken by the sudden blustery and chilling of the wind. It attacked at my skin fiercely that it felt like claws. I started to tremble as my teeth began to chatter. The visible puffs of my breath rose and vanished into the darkened and clouded night, but the pearl looking moon hung high and illuminated the night sky. The bare, naked trees began to dance like angry ballerinas, as the wind carried the snow dust.
I saw My friend, Shane, pull into the driveway. As I walked closer to his red BMW car, I heard the crunching of snow and frozen puddles cracking under my winter boots. I opened the door and sat on the middle seat in the back beside my Claire and Marissa.
We were stuck in traffic for over an hour. When we finally reached our destination, we joined the line to enter the party that was held at a rented home. In line, there were a variety of people. Some drunk, some on drugs, and some who were on high from just the thought of the party. Once we entered the hall, I felt the bass of the speakers shake the ground. I was surrounded by rainbow flashing lights and crowds of people dancing the night away. I smelt many different smells like vomit, sweat, weed, alcohol, perfume, cologne, and even freshly baked foods.
My friends and I walked to the dance floor and started dancing to our heart content. Power surged within me in a wave of euphoria. I felt like I was in control. I felt amazing.
After some time, the tiredness hit me, so I left the group and sat in the next room; the guest room. There was no door, so I could still see the party. I felt a sea of sadness engulf me afterward. I remembered taking deep breaths because I had to leave this girl behind as soon as the night came to a closing. I didn’t want to feel this way, so I got up and poured myself a drink of vodka and drank in silence until something caught my eye.
I saw a crowd begin to circle a couple who seemed to be arguing. I walked closer to the couple and saw him force himself onto her. She was suffocating and tried to gasp for air. At that moment, I felt scared for her, but I couldn't confront them, so I waited for it to stop as everyone else did. He whispered something into her ears and it looked as if she succumbed to him. I decided to follow them after the couple left the party. I trailed them outside until they stopped midway of an alleyway. The way he looked at her was intense. He slammed her against the wall and held her captive. I knew I had to do something; anything to save her, but I felt myself shaking. Tears trickled down my cheeks. I needed to move. I saw mouths moving, but couldn't hear much of the conversation. He reached out for her hand and walked her to his car that was parked nearby. I walked back to where Shane parked his car and started the engine.I pulled out of the parking lot and parked behind his car. I waited. And waited. Moments to minutes pass by. Finally He started his car and drove off. I trailed him until he parked his car in a driveway by a small house. They got out, walked to the porch of the house and were speaking. I followed them moments later. Slowly peeking out from behind the walls, I saw them having a intense conversation.
He punched the wall and at that moment, my body moved on its own. I ran towards him lunging forward to hit him while screaming at the top of my lungs. I wanted to divert his attention away from her, so she could escape, but even with her attempt to run he was smart and too powerful. He grabbed her by the ponytail and then elbowed her, causing her to drop.
My punch connected to the back of his head, but he grabbed me by one hand and punched me in the gut with the other. Blood spewed out of my mouth. He pressed a knife onto my skin and had me in a lock. The girl that was laying on the floor after being hit stayed quiet. The stars were out of sight. The colors were fading. I thought to myself at that moment, “I’m going to die.” The world I had known suddenly became darker. He threatened to not make a sound and turned me to my back facing him. He held my left arm firmly against the wall, while the other roamed my body. His fingers traced my exposed skin and touched me in places he shouldn't have. He whispered words that I would never forget. I felt myself breaking over in sweat. The girl who fell silent looked over her shoulder. We exchanged glances for a short moment-and what I saw was guilt in her eyes. I knew she was going to betray me. She sprinted, but he wasn't going after her. Instead, he continued to sexually assault me. I had hoped somewhere in my heart she would come back with help, but she never did. When I didn't satisfy his desires, he hit me as hard as his body allowed him to. I will never forget the excruciating pain I felt. I tried to break out of his hold, but every time he came back harder. I still remember the monstrous strength from his arms and hands. I still remember the lust he had in his eyes and the taste of tobacco from his cracked, dry lips. I was powerless. I had given up resisting after realizing that if I let him do as he pleased it would all be over quicker. He tied my hands behind my back and pushed me into the house onto the couch. He grinned and in that moment I felt a wave of helplessness strike. He began to spoke in a aggressive voice.
“What a bad girl you are. I’m going to make sure you remember this night”.
He put his hands around my neck in a lock and choked me and I rmemeber thinking, “I regret going to the party.”
