"We're here!" Aunt Sarah called out onto the camera as everyone else talked over each other.
Ellie tapped the mute button, "Dad and Mom, this is the loudest Christmas I've celebrated. Can't we just leave?"
"Ellie, you're not on mute," her father said. "You just turned the camera off."
"You'd think after being on Zoom during school all day that I'd get the hang of this," Ellie muttered to herself.
Ellie's mom sighed, "Ellie, we can't leave. We sent this meeting up in order to ensure that nobody would be lonely for Christmas."
"What did you say?" Grandpa Jones put his phone next to his ear.
"Dad! We can see the inside of your ear!" Ellie's mom said.
"Huh?" He asked.
Ellie's dad muted everyone. "Hey, guys, we're going to have the best Christmas yet no matter how, um, glitchy it is. Raise your virtual hand if you'd like to open the first gift."
Instantly, everyone's virtual hands shot up.
Ellie grumbled, "This will take forever."
.......
A few gifts into it, it was Ellie's turn to open her gifts.
She picked up her parent's gift to her, knowing that it would be the best one. They ALWAYS got her what she wanted. She ripped open the wrapping paper, and inside, there was a... box of masks.
"We got your favorite colors," her mom smiled.
"Thanks, Mom and Dad." Ellie looked down at her bright yellow and dark green masks. Sure, she liked both the colors. But, they were mixed together in patterns. She would get made fun of.
She ripped open her next gift. Even if her parents had let her down this year, Grandpa Jones always gave the funniest gifts. She looked down. Toilet paper. Great, he was laughing on the camera.
She kept opening gift after gift. Hand sanitizer. Clorox wipes. More masks. Paper towels. Finally! Someone gave her a book. Wait, it was about how to stay safe during the quarantine. Finally, her last gift was from Aunt Sarah. Usually, she gave her clothes. This year it will be... tissues and an ornament that says 2020.
.......
After a long and boring Zoom call with her relatives, Ellie went upstairs. Her parents followed her up.
"Leave me be," she snapped at them.
"Oh, Ellie, I know this Christmas isn't what you wanted. But, think about how lucky we are to be safe. Hospitals are crowding and some people aren't as lucky as us," her mom said.
"We know you didn't get the gifts that you wanted," her dad started, "but-."
Ellie interrupted him, "It's fine."
"Let me finish. It was more of a joke on our part. You see, we all chipped in a little bit of money to get you what you really wanted. The other gifts were a joke."
Ellie cocked her head, "What do I want?"
Her parents motioned for her to follow them outside. There was a car waiting for her on the driveway. It was tiny and new. It was grey with black seats. Ellie noticed the big, fat, and red bow sitting on top of it. In large letters on a poster, it read, "Merry Christmas! Love, Your Family."
"So you guys were joking the entire time?" Ellie laughed.
"Yep," her mom said.
She ran to the car, "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! When do I start driving it?!"
"Whenever you want," her parents smiled at her.
.......
I just want to thank Zoom for helping families connect every day. Happy holidays, everyone!
It's Christmas in 2020!(Nonya)
