She began to scream in such an unfathomable fear watching as the foam from her mouth pooled around her. The doctors rushed in to find Alice frantically trying to unscrew the sealed pill bottle screaming about the last pill. Her body convulsed as the needle pulsed through her. I was perplexed by the ordeal but I was the only one willing to comfort her and cradle her in my arms, knowing how scared that poor little girl must have been. May 30th 1951, that was the last time I was ever with Alice, after a month they took her someplace else they claimed to her was safer because she was still only twelve years old and was oblivious to what euthanasia was. She was only a child, there was so much life she hadn’t explored yet but it was the drugs that ended it before she could properly start it. Her last words that resonated with me was that she was always the true villain, I never knew what they meant until I was collecting her things to give back to her mother once she passed. She had kept a journal of all her journeys she hallucinated which were generally short and not very concerning but her final one in 1951 was written in the third person which was what struck us all and the one which I have always remembered which was her goal.

May 30th 1951
Murmurs from all directions crescendoed as she walked past them, dismally watching them pull their children closer. She was familiar with the gossip and constant stares which when given enough pressure can cause any mind to snap. She continued to walk past at a slightly faster pace through the fog, slowly slipping her hand into her right pocket. She momentarily paused at the thought of the others seeing her. She continued to walk tracing around the key on the cap of the bottle in her pocket. One step, two steps, three steps. She stopped at a red light. She abruptly felt a pair of cold eyes staring into the back of her head which was more than enough for her to believe that she was in danger. She slowly unscrewed the cap of the bottle momentarily pausing before each turn of the cap so it wasn’t obvious. The bottle opened after a few turns of the cap. After counting the contents of the bottle, she placed them into her curled palm to ensure they don’t fall out from her hand. She lifted her hand up pressing it against her mouth appearing as though she was going to cough. She placed one into her mouth and continued to walk further. She still felt that cold pair of eyes staring her down. She picked herself up with caution and walked hastily toward her destination. When she turned to see if she was still being followed she saw the figure of a man but instead he was carrying a clock and was shorter, older and hairier. The figure came closer towards, her brain stuttered for a moment and her eyes take in more light than she expected. The figure's beady eyes open wider than they already were and its long pointed ears were slightly more revealed as it continued in her direction still hidden in the fog. She discerned his mouth moving but she couldn’t comprehend what it was saying. A familiar wash of the cold had hit her as she stood there. The figure had stopped walking towards her for a brief moment, she turned around to proceed to go to her destination but the sound of footsteps crescendoed and became more frequent. As she turned around for a second time she heard her name being called by the figure “Alice, Alice I’m late, I’m late, I’m late!”. She knew this sounded familiar to her but she couldn’t put her finger on it. The figure came closer to her, stepping more into the light. She looked at the figure and saw its long white three-toed feet. It extended its paw out within her reach gesturing for her to hold his hand, she reluctantly grabbed it and was hauled in.
A familiar breeze hit her, the fog had slowly disappeared as they went further into the hole. An array of roses could be seen from a distance. It felt like home to her again but it was a different version of that feeling. As she picked herself up, she was greeted with a box. She opened the box to an assorted array of mouldy "Eat me" cookies. She pushed the box away from and felt hands grab onto her wrist. She looked up and discerned the shape of black spades across its body. She felt four other hands wrap around her hauling her away. The strikingly beautiful aroma of roses stung her nose as she was aggressively hauled through the roses she had seen on her way here. The aroma got stronger the closer she got but a tinge of rotting carcasses stung her nose even more. As she was dragged further by the card soldiers she could see the three-toed feet of the figure she was met with before but what was new to her was the puddle of blood that sat underneath its body streaming at a slow pace. They abruptly stopped for a moment and she slipped her hands into her pocket to grab the bottle again. She grabbed it and without hesitation, this time popped another one into her mouth. They continued to drag her again and were abruptly stopped by a pool of blood streaming out from the heart-shaped door. The cards continued and opened the door where they were met with the smell of decay and rotting flesh. Oblivious to the smell, the cards continued to bring Alice to the throne trekking through the pool of blood that went up to their knees until they stepped on something that felt like hair. The card soldiers exchanged looks of confusion for a few moments until one of them let go of her and decided to inspect what they stepped on. The card soldier bent down and rummaged through the blood and picked up the obstruction. The obstruction came in two parts, the head and the axe still attached. The card soldier screamed in such an unfathomable way and threw the head of his queen across the room in fear. He went and grabbed onto Alice again and they trekked out of the room as fast as they could fearing that they were next. The card soldiers, seeming as though they no longer had a queen to serve, ran in fear leaving Alice alone. Alice still in shock of what she had witnessed decided to pop another pill in to calm her down. After a few moments of sitting in silence, she began murmuring to herself contemplating how she was going to leave but she heard a familiar voice uttering “Some go this way. Some go that way. But as for me, myself, personally, I prefer the short cut.” She picked herself up and followed the voice until she got to a small door with a golden doorknob. The doorknob warned her to only go in at her own dismay. She crouched to fit through the door and crawled in to be again met with a pungent smell. The doorknob unbeknownst to what occurred asks her if she knew what the source of the smell is to which responds that she doesn't.
She straightened herself and continued to walk through. She was then greeted by a frantic man with a long peculiar hat and the most rambunctious curled hair yelling with such fear in his voice hiding something behind his back. She scans his appearance and notices his blood-stained coat, to not frighten him to a greater extent she greeted the man as though nothing was wrong. She asked him to slow down so she could understand what he was saying and he completely stopped making noise. He moved his hand in front of him revealing a blood-stained purple striped cat. Alice recognised the Cheshire Cat and was met with confusion as she knew the voice she heard moments earlier was what he had said to her before when she was here the first time. The sound of two sets of footsteps came from a distance and crescendoed as they got closer. Two plump little men came to ask for Alice’s opinion of what the punishment for the frantic man should be. Alice was confused as to why they thought she was the queen since it was always the queen’s decision for punishment. The little men grabbed the frantic man’s leg and began pushing him out of the door. Alice began exclaiming to let him go but they did not listen to her command. Alice frantically ran out to see what was going to happen to this poor man who did not comprehend what he had done. She began feeling tired so she popped another pill into her mouth. She ran trying to follow the two little men but there was no luck they had disappeared. She decided to cease finding the frantic man and find a place to rest for the night seeming as though she did not know how to leave. She slept for a few hours until she was abruptly woken up by the sound of singing, singing she had once heard before. She walks closer to the source of the sound to find a dodo bird upon a large rock with a section of it lit on fire singing as a circle of animals parade around him. The bird stops singing and asks Alice why she is here again. Alice has no answer and stares blankly at the bird. The bird flies up to Alice's forehead and knocks on it gesturing if she is here mentally to which she responds "Yes" but doesn’t know why she is here.
As he examined Alice asking her a series of questions, a hare claiming to be a friend of the frantic man ran to them out of breath and in fear telling Alice that she ought to stop the two little men from executing the frantic man. Alice confused with this ordeal followed the hare along with the dodo bird to find where the frantic man is being hidden. They arrive at the queen's throne again where the pungent smell was stronger than it was the day prior. They scanned the room and find a doorway to another room. The frantic man hears them and begun to shout for help, They all ran towards the doorway but to their dismay, they had no key, Alice searched around and then she remembered the cap of her bottle. She slipped her hands into her pockets but there was no sign of the bottle. They all became fearful as they hear the card soldiers enter the room where the frantic man is locked up in. The two little men started laughing sinisterly as they prepared to watch him being executed by the card soldiers. Alice continued her search for the key but there was no luck. As she scanned around the room for a second time she found a large safety pin on the hare's coat to open the doorway where they were welcomed by a line of ready to attack card soldiers placing their axes strategically to stop the lot from coming into the room. The hare decided to distract the soldiers and the two little men by offering them what he claims is a nice cup of tea to which they couldn’t refuse. They all sat in close proximity of the caged frantic man to ensure he doesn’t escape however with their backs faced towards him, as they drank the tea both little men became drowsy. Alice slowly went to the cage with the safety pin and tried to unlock the lock but the chain of the lock clattered onto the bars drawing attention to her. The two little men turn around and see that the frantic man is being let free and they take one of the soldier's axes and run to stab him. The hare with no hesitation jumps in where he is also stabbed. Alice and the dodo bird in fear of themselves dying ran out of the room where they were chased by the soldiers and the men. They both got far enough away from the lot and decided to stay together to protect each other. As Alice began to cry in fear of what’s going to happen to her the bird wrapped its wings around her trying to comfort her and assuring her that all they need to do is sleep it off to recuperate for the next morning.
The strong smell of smoke stung both their noses but the dodo brushed it off and continued sleeping. Alice woke up to a caterpillar resting upon her arm smoking. The caterpillar returned her bottle causing Alice to misconstrue what was happening and screams at the caterpillar assuming that he had taken the rest of the pills since there was only one left. The caterpillar assured her that this was the only pill that was left when he found it yet she didn’t believe him. He proceeded to warn her that whatever she does she has to be careful with the last pill because of the dire consequences that come with it. Without allowing him to finish his warning she flicked the caterpillar of her and returned to her sleep. She woke up the following morning with the dodo bird nowhere in sight. She discerned his footsteps in the dirt and frantically followed them, leading her back to the room where the frantic man and hare were murdered. The dodo bird was strapped to the wall screaming in fear for Alice to take him down. The two little men walk into the main room oblivious to Alice saving the dodo bird. The door slowly began to open and Alice quickly ran to hide. The two men walked in and sat in front of the bird mocking it and laughing sinisterly at it. They began murmuring things to each other in a quiet tone until they struck Alice’s attention by saying that if she stays long enough that they will inevitably have a battle. After moments of irrelevant banter, they called in the card soldiers and commanded them to begin the execution of the dodo bird. Alice was fearfully waiting for the right moment to come out of hiding and become the hero she always perceived herself to be. She began to silently cry at the thought of her dying before being able to save the bird and let out an accidental sniffle. Realising what she had done she curled into a ball hoping that she didn’t expose herself. She saw red long hands extend and haul her out. She began to shield herself from the other card soldiers as she stood there fearfully waiting for what was going to happen.
Slowly she reached in for another pill and then remembered what that caterpillar had said to her. She instantly felt regret wash over her knowing that the caterpillar didn’t finish what he was saying about the pills. Trying her best to comprehend what she did hear she came to remember his warning about the dire consequences of the last pill. She scanned the last pill and saw the words "For the villain’s demise" so without hesitation, she went in for the last pill. She sat and waited for the card soldiers to kill either of the two men and abruptly she was met with a knife in her back. As she turned around to see who her murderer was she accidentally twisted the knife even more into her back until the shiny metal had disappeared inside her and the black handle was pushing harshly against her broken skin. She sank to her knees, convulsing and trembling as thick blood flowed profusely from the gaping hole in her back. She began trembling at a slower rate. She sat there defeated as she tried to move her chest and suck in air, but nothing came in. Her heart slowly stopped. Her mind was idle. She felt nothing but a blanket of jet black darkness engulf her being. The card soldier who hauled her out from hiding picked her up again and took her lifeless body back through the hole the figure brought her here through leaving her lifeless body alone in the cold. That’s when she knew, she knew the person she was truly protecting herself from was her own self, the true villain.
