They were everywhere.
They were beautiful.
They were unguarded.
They were indestructible.
And they scared the shit out of everyone.
They first appeared in Major Cities. Doorways. The most beautiful, enticing, warm looking, sweet smelling... Doorways. They looked like Art. Heck, they were Art. Picture a rainbow of melted metals perfectly inscribed into a fresco like doorjamb , with light airy paintings that draw your eye to the Doorway itself. There was no door. Just the outline of the doorjamb. A shiny opaque mist filled the doorway. All you had to do was walk right in.
You didn’t even have to knock.
Some people did just that. Walked into the mist. Some even turned to wave back at the loved ones, or strangers watching them walk into the mist. You would see them wave…then…they were…gone. So far, nobody, anywhere on Earth, had come back thru the doorways. It looked like it was a one way ticket. But to what?
Nobody knew.
I had heard the rumors: Aliens set them up so we could travel to other worlds. God put them there to let us walk right into Heaven if we were brave enough. Still others thought it was an Evil plot to get us to walk right into our own doom. Some Sociologist Wag said that all that would be necessary to take over Earth, was to put Doorways that looked pretty and smelled sweet, all over the planet. Our natural curiosity would eventually win out…and thru a doorway we would march. Of our own free will.
I waved goodbye to my friends and family. My Aunt Katherine had brought me a pie to take with me. Jennie gave me her class ring. And a long lingering kiss to boot. I loved her, but she didn’t want to walk through the doorway. I did. My Mother took it the hardest. She said:
“I love you. I hope something good is on the other side. “
I hoped so too.
I stepped into the doorway.
The mist was cool.
It smelled like limes.
The doorway glowed briefly.

03/03/2021Aloha Gail,
There is no part two! That was my intention, to let the reader decide what is beyond the doorway. Funnily enough, out of my friends who I showed the story to...not a single one would have stepped through that doorway. But...they all want to know what is behind it.
I think most of us have a primal fear of the unknown. But a few of us would have given into curiosity ...and stepped through. If you did, would you come back? Does the doorway look just as daunting from the other side?
I think we find out when we die.
Smiles, Kevin

03/02/2021Hey Gordon,
Well...I thought if I told folks what I saw beyond the doorway...that would be cheating. I wanted the Reader to decide if they would be brave enough to walk into the unknown...and to figure out what awaited them on the other side of the door. Heck, I won't even go into a cave that is well marked!
Smiles, Kevin
