Walks Through The Shadows
Born 1953, F, from Loveland, Colorado, United States"Daddy, how are you feeling today?" Emily asked.
He had his Donald Duck pajamas on laying in bed with the sun coming through the window blind.
"The cancer is taking charge, but I feel light and giddy when you walk into the room." he replied.
"Daddy, I don't know what I am going to do without you?" I said.
"I will always be with you in mind and spirit," he assured me. (Paused) "Just pop me up in your mind and talk to me,he said. You know me. You know exactly what I would say, Sweet Pea."
"I will try," I said. "What do you want to talk to me about?"
At theat moment Mom came into the room. "Emily, you are spending too much time with your father, he needs to
rest." mom said.
Daddy said, "Please, Mary, give us another ten minutes."
"Let's make it five," she argued, as she stepped out of the room.
"Mom is under a lot of pressure, Daddy, I said.
"Come close to me," he said as he grabbed my hand to have me sit on the bed. I want to tell you how excited I am to be going on a trip after my death. I want you to try to be happy for me. I will be leaving my body here and I will be
going on an adventure of a lifetime. I have done it before billions of years ago." Daddy said enthusiastically.
"Do you really believe this?" I asked. "I am fourteen and I have never heard anyone talk like this. I will try to be happyfor you and try to believe you."
"That's all I can ask of you, he said, I believe this wholeheartedly. I love you."
"I will love you forever, Daddy," I said affectionately.
"One more thing, when I expire I am sending all of you on a trip to Hawaii for a month to celebrate my life," he said.
"Thank you, what a thoughtful idea. Have you told everybody?" I asked.
"I will," he replied.
"Emily, time is up! mom shouted.
I give Daddy a quick kiss and hug. I squeeze his hand on the way out.
Two days passed when the orange, maple leaves fall like snow with the rush of the heavy breeze against the trees. Daddy had gone peacefully according to the report. I thought I was prepared, but I struggle.
Today is Wednesday. My family, Mom, Tyler and Tara are preparing for the funeral this afternoon. I feel listless, but need to go to the store for some red roses. I ask my mom but she doesn't hear me. I grab my purse and jog to the store. The wind is comforting and made me feel alive. I grab a bag of M&M's-my comfort snack and four red roses.
I return home. "Where have you been?" Mom yelled.
"I told you I was going to the store." I replied.
"Please, do not take off like that again," she said.
Mom and Tara were dressed in black dresses and Tyler in a black suit. I came down the stairs in a white lacy dress with yellow daisies. Mom looked white as a ghost. I thought for sure she was gong to have a heart attack.
"What do you think you are doing?" Mom shouted.
"This is Daddy's favorite dress and I thought it would be appropriate for him. He hates black and he never wore black. I am confused," I pleaded.
I run up the stairs with eyes full of tears feeling sick to my stomach and sobbed. I don't understand things. Daddy mentioned being happy. How do I be happy? I said, I will try.
There was a graveside service at the Memorial Gardens near a park. At first, I hid my roses under my black dress. The crowd was quite large, but not surprising for Daddy was a good man in the community. Mom, Tyler, and I lined up by the casket while the preacher read,"Footprints" and Psalm 23. I broke up the petals of the roses to be ready when the casket is lowered in the grave. Rose petals represent love. I changed my mind and gave a handful with hesitation to the family. Mom, Tyler, and Tara dropped them on the ground. I kneeled down to pick them up. Tyler stepped on my hand. "Ouch!" I cried. A lady who I recognized asked if I was okay. I responded, "Fine." I hurriedly picked up as many petals as I could and threw them on my Daddy's casket and said a prayer to find forgiveness in my heart and to express the deep love I had for my great father.
This is the day of the Hawaii trip so everyone is running around packing. We all have backpacks, in addition, to taking a suitcase for the long trip. Backpacks are used for items to keep occupied. Emily tries to converse with Tara and Tyler.
There are just a few words exchanged. I don't know what I did to them.
Tara has dark hair, brown eyes and is wearing a Knit Works ruffled Boho dress with a white bodice: shirt that has whiteand gold daisies with a blue background.
I have long, blond hiar, and I'm wearing Jumping Beans hanky hem skater dress-coral with white hearts.
Tyler has brown hair, brown eyes, and is wearing a Nike zippered top with white lettered Nike on the front with black jeans.
Mom is wearing a denim jean dress.
"The taxi is here," mom called.
Everyone scrambled with their luggage into the taxi. LA airport was only a half hour away.
Arrival, Mom picked up our tickets for United Airlines to Honolulu. We boarded the plane for the five hour flight. Mom sat across the aisle, Tyler was across the aisle from her, then, me and Tara was by the window.
"Mom, did you ever go to Hawaii with Daddy?" I asked.
"Many times," she said.
"What was your favorite island?" I asked.
"Kauai was our favortie. It wasn't so poplulated and was low keyed," mom said.
"Why do you have to talk all the time, Emily?" Tyler scolded.
"I...I...am sorry...I...I...annoy you," I stammered.
We got to Oaho about 3 pm. We had another flight to Kauai on a smaller aircraft. We got to our next flight in time to board. We filed onto the plane to find ourselves seated in the same sequence as the LA flight. The take off was a bit bumpy for awhile. Then, the plane balanced itself out.
"Tyler, what are you doing with my "Secret Of The Old Clock" book?" I inquired.
"You weren't reading it so I took it," Tyler confessed.
"You didn't ask me?" I replied.
"I don't have to ask you, Punk." Tyler siad.
"Mom!" I cried.
"He's not hurting your book, Emily," Mom said as she turned away to read her romance novel.
Emily turns around. Tara has my bag of M&M's.
"If you would have asked me I would have given you some," I said.
"I want the whole bag," Tara replied.
It was hard to fight back the tears, so a few came down my cheeks- no one even noticed.
I look down and Tara has my unicorn pen in her lap.
"What are you doing with my pen?" I asked.
"I want it so I took it," Tara said.
"Why is everyone being so cruel to me! Emily exclaimed.
Just then, the pilot announce, "Both engines are on fire. Everyone, we are going to have to make an emergency landing. Lean forward and protect your head with your hands."
We were located in the back of the plane. I heard an explosion and that's the last thing I remember.
When I woke up I found myself on the sand near what looked like a beach. The sun was warm on my face, and I looked up at the clear blue sky. Something was poking me sharply in my leg. A man was removing the plane debris off
me very carefully. He was communicating on his cell phone. Then, he said, "bye."
"Hi, I am Harold at your service as you paramedic, "he said.
"What is your name?" he asked.
"My name is Emily Walker," I said.
'Are you in any pain, Emily?" he asked.
"I am having sharp pain in my upper left leg." I said.
He investigated by moving more debris to expose the left leg. A metal plate about llx14 was halfway lodged in the leg.
"Please don't touch it, or I will scream." Emily warned.
"Where is my family," she asked.
"I don't know," Harold said.
Soon a helicopter with the insignia "Flight for Life" landed. The pilot brought a wheeled stretcher to me. He supported my affected leg by wrapping it in a blanket. The two men transported me to the stretcher and then, to the helicopter. There was small and large debris everywhere they walked. I was grateful to be alive.
Once in the helico[ter. Harold started an IV with an antibiotic, took vitals, and checked my breathing. I noticed there was a ghostlike man standing by me on the other side of the paramedics. I saw him touch my hand, but didn't feel anything. I whispered, "Who are you?" I am Michael, your guardian angel," he said.
Harold informed me that I was going to Oahu Memorial Hospital. It would be a half hour trip so he said to rest until we get there.
I closed my eyes wondering what was going to happen to me. The metal will need to be removed from my leg. It is starting to throb which I told Harold. He gave me some Tylenol. Where is my family?
"You will be seen by the doctor as soon as we get to the hospital," he said.
I arrived at the emergency room of the hospital, and was rushed into the operating room where they lifted me on a cart. I was told Doctor John would be in to see me. It wasn't long before the doctor came into the room and looked at my leg.
"Emily, you need to have surgery right away. The metal is blocking the blood flow to the rest of your leg and foot. X-Rays were taken and I was prepped for surgery. The X-Rays revealed multiple splintered fractures.
A wisp of smoke-like material submerged by my side.
"Michael?" I asked.
"I am here, Child, Michael said. "You will never be alone."
"I don't understand," I pleaded.
Just then, the nurse came into the room. "My name is Angel and I am here to give you some medicine in your IV to help you sleep and not feel the procedure.
When I woke up I was in ICU. Doctor John came in to tell me the leg had a huge cavity left from the large piece of metalthat was removed. The wound had to be filled with quite a bit of gauze which means it will have to heal before the rod
can be inserted in the leg.
"Doctor John, I asked, Will I walk again?"
"It will take a lot of time, but I don't see why not,"
I was in ICU for several hours before I was moved to a bed and to a room. The room had a huge picture window. I was anxious to get up to look out the window, but it was a bad idea. All the medical equipment was around the head of the bed with canned lights above the bed and a flourescent light over the head above the equipment. Comfortable blue cushion chairs were at the foot and at my left side of the bed.
Angel waltzes into the room to inform me she will be my nurse for the shift. "I will be giving you some oxycontin for pain; an anticoagulant, which is a blood thinner to prevent clots; and your antibiotic, she said.
"Thank you so much for taking such good care of me," I said sincerely.
I noticed Michael slipped in and was sitting at the chair beside me. I asked, "Why are you here?"
"I am here to take care of you and be here when you are ready," he replied.
I close my eyes briefly and open them to find Michael is gone.
I was startled to see my Mom sitting in the chair at the foot of the bed. She was wearing the clothes she wore on the airplaneand carried her book.
"Mom, how are you?" I cried.
"I am a bit disturbed by the way I have treated you, she said, I was so jealous of your relationship with your father and the
ability you had to forgive everyone no matter how you were treated."
"Oh, Mom, I love you so much," I said as I busted out in tears.
Mom stands up and walks out of the room. My mouth is wide open not understanding what just happened.
As I attempted to regain my composure. Tara walks into the room and sits in the chair.
"Tara, are you okay," I asked.
"Emily, I am so sorry," Tara said. "Do you remember when you couldn't find your important math paper? I took it and wadded it up in a ball than threw it away. That was only one of many things I did to you." I was so envious of you with your attractive looks, genuine kindness to people and animals. You are smart and perfect anad I couldn't handle it." she explained.
"Tara, I love you so much, I can't tell you enough," I said.
Tara repeated Mom's behavior and walked out...
Somehow I wasn't surprised when Tyler came through the door and planted himself in the same seat.
"Hi, Tyler," I said.
He didn't respond, but I was ready to listen.
"I apologize for being a jerk of a brother all these years, he said, Do you remember your first boyfriend? You were in theshower and your cell phone was ringing on your bed. I answered it and made up lies about what you thought of him. You cried for days over him when he broke up with you. I laughed and laughed at your expense. I did so many things to you because I was jealous of the fact that everything came easy for you, and you would forget everything I did.
"Tyler, I have always loved you with all my heart." I said.
Tyler left the same way he came.
I laid down my head shocked and shaken to see my family and what transpired. Was it a dream? No, I saw and talked to them in broad daylight.
Look at the window. There's a raven perched on the brick ledge, "Caw, caw, caw." Then, five or six ravens hit and landed on the
window ledge. The ravens sounded out "caw, caw, caw. I lifted myself up and stuck out my left leg and hopped over to the window. I had pain, but I didn't care. I leaned myself against the window. I did not disturb the birds. They made a chorus of "caw, caw, caw." I did not know what this meant, but it meant something. Down below was a graveyard in the courtyard of the
hospital. I leaned there for quite some time.
I managed to get back to bed without being seen. I was breathing heavily and I had increased pain. I rested for awhile before Michael was at his seat.
"Why is forgiveness so hard to come by?" I asked. I always thought that was the route to go."
"It's a two way street," Michael said. "Emily, are you ready?"
Two days passed. Doctor John and Angel come into the room.
"I have some bad news. You have sepsis, the infection has spread. We will need to amputate your leg," the doctor said.
Words escaped me, and my body was shaken.
"I dream about my conversation with Daddy. I am going on a trip after my death. I will leave my body here and will go on adventure of a lifetime."
Just then, Mom, Tara, and Tyler parade in the room and stand at the foot of the bed. They say in unison that they love me.
Afterwards, they filed throught my room, kick up their heels and before they even get to the doorway they disappear in thin air. I couldn't believe my eyes.
A day prior, I asked Angel if she would purchase a white ruffled nightgown for me. Today, she was anxious to see what I thought of her purchase. It was so lovely it brought tears to my eyes.
The ravens were at the window again.
I thanked everyone for their fantastic care, but I wouldn't be having the surgery.
Night came. Michael spent a lot of time with me. I put on my nightgown and just enjoyed the tranquility of the evening. I thought about my family and all the people I had know. I was happy. I thought of Daddy and thanked him for showingme the way. I hummed the music, "Never Alone," with piano played by Jim Brickman.
"I am ready, Michael," I said.
Without a word, he stood up cuddled his arm under my knees, under my neck, and lifted my body. I turned into a spirit and
the nightgowned body was left on the bed. Michael carried me off to a new adventure as the sun rose in the distance.
