The Wedding Cake
F, from Sydney, Australia.jpeg)
The exhausted baker carried the wedding cake into the reception venue, along with her assistant. She had been awake most of the previous night, icing the beautiful red roses around the edges of the three-tier cake. Once it had been placed on the stand, she noticed that the early guests at the reception meandered over and admired her handiwork.
At the end of the evening, the bride and groom danced over to the wedding cake and the music stopped. A sharp knife was handed to the bride. It had a red, silk ribbon around the handle and she held it with care. The groom then placed his hand over the bride’s right hand, and they pushed down on the top tier cake. The knife sliced through the cake easily when they cut it.
Suddenly, the bride noticed the movement of a dark object crawling out of the cake. One object turned into many objects, as the cockroaches emerged under, over and between the tiers of the ornate wedding cake.
The bride and groom screamed in shock at the sight of cockroaches spreading out amongst their carefully selected wedding guests. The guests scattered and ran outside in shock and horror.
The groom grabbed his mobile phone and called the baker and went through to voicemail. He was furious, as this event had ruined the remainder of the wedding reception. The guests were all either standing outside and gossiping or had jumped in their cars and driven off, to a place not infested with cockroaches. He went looking for his bride and found her crying in the garden.
“How are you doing?” he asked her, putting an arm around her shoulders.
“Our entire wedding has been ruined! Everyone will be talking about the cockroaches every time we see them. What are we going to do?” she cried.
The bridegroom hung his head in thought and then he looked up with an evil flicker in his eye.
“We are going to get our revenge on the baker …” he explained.
Sometime later, the bride and groom had collected up as many cockroaches as they could find and catch, filling up two boxes. They proceeded to carry these boxes to their car and drive to the address of the baker. When they got there, they brought the boxes with them and knocked on the door. Nobody answered the door, so they went around the back of the house, where they found the kitchen door open. They quietly went in and placed the boxes in different parts of the house and took off the lids of the boxes and ran out the kitchen door again. The cockroaches were crawling and flying about the house, looking for hiding places. It would be exceedingly difficult to get rid of so many cockroaches and a pest control expert would need to be brought in.
Suddenly, the groom received a call, it was from their baker and she now lived at a different address!

04/06/2021That is absolutely inexcusable! If the roaches were alive, that means that they infected the cake after it had been baked and left exposed. I would sue him for endangering my health and the health of all those who might have eaten some of that cake. Roaches carry diseases and it is the prprietor's responsiblity to keep the area where food is being prepared adequately clean. Also, a refund of the money paid for the cake is in order.

04/06/2021Okay, last story I read from you I didn't 'get' at all. But this one is a lot more obvious.
OOPS! I guess someone will be in for a very unhappy surprise.... But I definitely don't blame the wedding couple for wanting revenge. What I didn't quite 'get' about this story is why the baker would do such a thing.... or whether someone else sabotaged the cake after the baker had completed and delivered it? So these questions definitely left the story a bit open-ended and also open to interpretation. But it is another interesting, thought provoking, and well written short story. Thanks for sharing your short stories on Storystar, Debra! : )
