The Map to the Lucky Queue
Adult, F, from Sydney, Australia.jpeg)
The queue stretched around the corner of the block. I waited patiently to get to the front of this interminable queue.
This morning, I had followed a beautifully designed map from my home to this endpoint. Unfortunately, it looked as if many other people had followed the same map and joined the queue. This made me rather mad as I wanted to be the first and only one to drop into the zone and collect the possible pot of gold at the end of the rainbow queue.
“Excuse me,” I asked the person in front of me in the queue, “do you know how much longer we need to wait until we get to the front of this long queue?”
“I have no idea since I joined just prior to you. However, I did hear that the person who is the 1,000th person to get to the front of the queue, will win a trip to Hawaii.”
“Fantastic! I’ve always wanted to go on holiday to Hawaii!”
My mind filled with bright garlands of flowers and dancing hula girls. My excitement went up a notch. Then reality hit home. Just exactly what number were they at right now and would I even be in the ballpark for this prize. I waited and started to count the number of people who were coming out of the building with a sad look on their faces. The prize obviously hadn’t been won.
This resulted in me remaining in the queue and waiting as patiently as possible.
After a few hours, I had entered the building and was next in line. The person I had spoken to previously was being served and a great shout arose, “Hooray! The prize has been won.”
It turned out that I must’ve been queue member number 1,001 and I immediately started sobbing after seeing just how close I had been to winning the prize of my dreams. I tore up the map and threw the pieces into the recycling bin. I decided to stay anyway to listen to the winner’s speech.
He stood up and raised his voice, “Thank you to everyone involved in providing the map with clues and giving us an equal opportunity to win this prize. However, I have been thinking awfully hard about this prize and have decided to give it to my friend in the queue behind me, Mary. She shared her snacks with me and kept me company throughout the wait. She is a good person and deserves to be the recipient.”
My mouth fell open and I looked agape at my benefactor. He was so generous and kind. After he came down and handed it to me, he said to me, “Mary, would you like to accompany me to Hawaii as we seem to have so much in common.”
“Yes, we can go together but isn’t this prize for one person?”
“It is but I’m a billionaire and I can afford another ticket …”
