The lesson
Born 1980, M, from Exeter, United KingdomA very long time ago, The Moon became jealous of The Sun. Every time The Sun appeared in the sky, people seemed to be so happy and pleased to see him. In contrast, at night, when The Moon was out, most people didn’t even notice her. The few that did, watched from the safety of their houses. The Moon was upset. There had to be a way to become as popular as The Sun, she reasoned.
The Moon thought about this for a long time. Finally, she came up with an idea. She went to The Sun excitedly and shared the idea with him. For one week, they will swap places. The Moon will rise during the day and at night The Sun will take over. He considered this and agreed. The Sun was arrogant and told The Moon: “I will do this for you, it doesn’t matter what time I’m in the sky, people will come out to see me. I’m a celebrity, people adore me.” The Moon thanked The Sun and went away happy.
On the following Monday, The Moon rose at dawn. People were confused. “What is The Moon doing up this early? This must be a mistake.” As the day progressed, the streets, normally busy with crowds of people, stayed empty. Nobody went to work thinking it was the middle of the night. The night workers did overtime. And so, the day passed.
At dusk, The Sun rose. In his arrogance, he fully expected people on the streets to meet him. But, the streets were deserted. People who noticed that The Sun was up pulled down their blinds, drew the curtains and simply stayed indoors. So, the night passed.
The Moon was the first to notice that something was wrong. She went to see The Sun and said: “Dear Sun, I have noticed that when I’m up during the day, no one goes to work. And when you’re up at night, no one comes out to greet you. Should we go back to the way things were?” The Sun dismissed her concerns by saying: “It is just the first night, people will just have to get used to it, they will adapt, you’ll see.”
However, The Sun was wrong. Everything continued as it had done on Monday. There were other changes too. Nocturnal creatures, some of which used The Moon for navigation, started appearing during the day, which affected the ecosystem. The Sun could not control the tides. He did his best, but the only thing he managed to do was heat up the sea's temperature, which affected the oceans, sea life and the currents. The Sun became frustrated, but he was determined not to lose face.
Again, The Moon tried to make The Sun see reason, but he continued to dismiss her worries. And so it was that The Moon gradually became less and less jealous of The Sun, not taking any pleasure in their role reversal any more. The Sun, noticing that The Moon no longer idolised him, became less and less arrogant.
By Sunday, when they resumed their roles in the sky, and the world slowly returned to normal, they came to understand the value of their own roles.
Today The Moon is no longer jealous, The Sun is humble and they both cooperate to keep the world in balance.
