Annabelle Lee sits isolated alone on a cliff staring out to sea. She isn't waiting for some lost love who will not return to her. Her thoughts are on her father and his request. In her mind the words continuously repeat " Daughter, I want to die. Her daddy wanted peace. I want freedom from this cancer and it's pain. When you give me that medicine again will you give your daddy peace. She knew what her father was requesting.
In her mind the same images loop and reloop playing with the frequency of a very bad video stream. She thinks of the laws she would be breaking . She thinks of her brothers, Chester, Morgan Junior, Eliberty, what judgement would they have for her , if she does this thing. Was it truly " mercy"? or was the act murder..there is a lot for her to consider and so little time to process any of it. She sees herself nodding yes. Then the image freezes along with her mind.
Her father was begging her to help him commit suicide what would any loving daughter do ? Assuming she is caught, could she pay the consequences? What would the town think about her " killing her father ? " What would her mother think ? Again she sees herself nodding yes.Had she consciously or even subconsciously agreed to commit Euthanasia ? It all seemed surreal.
As she tasted her salty tears slowly inching their way down her cheeks Annabelle's mind went blank. Why had he asked her ? She had siblings, their father had another daughter, they were both nurses .Why hadn't he asked his doctor ?
While Annabelle put the final thoughts on the request and the answer she had or possibly hadn't given. inside the house her daddy was preparing to die. He called his wife of more than fifty years to his side. He thanked her for giving him six wonderful children . Then He kissed her cheek goodbye.
He apologized to the son in laws he had held strong resentment against for years. One son in law accepted the apology and asked for forgiveness for eloping with the youngest of his daughters. The other lowered his head and barely whispered " it's unnecessary Mr. Lee, it's the times we live in racial marriages are not easily accepted. Sir, you've been a father to me.
Individually He advised his extended family members to " Trust God."
To one special granddaughter he asked, " Are you still my girl?" She replied ," Always ! Her grandfather answered " No, not always." Nothing here is forever. Your grandpa has to go away for a while. I need to visit our family in Heaven.
The little girl asked, can I go with you. I want to see the family in Heaven too. The grandpa hugged the child , not this time. You'll join me later.
Annabelle silently returned to the house. It was time for her daddy's medicine . She had a decision to make. Did she or didn't she ?

10/10/2021As other readers have already stated before, this is really well written!
I think you did an especially good job at describing Annabelle's inner conflict on whether helping her father to die is the right decision.
