Open Your Eyes
Born 1960, F, from San Antonio Texas, United StatesI had been feeling sad and lonely. I decided to go back into the past and visit one my childhood homes, which was a small town a few miles outside of a small rural town.
My Sister, Mother and Brother were sitting at the kitchen table enjoying a meal. I walked in and said, "Hello!"
They welcomed me warmly and asked, "How have you been?" I felt secure and comfortable being welcomed home.
Soon my Father made an appearance and asked, "Why are you here?" I answered, "I was feeling sad and lonely and needed to see my Family again?"
My Father said, "You need to open your eyes and see the truth. For what you see is not reality." He motioned for me to open the front door.
I opened the door and peered out. What used to be lush green grass, plentiful trees and crystal blue skies were no more. There was a vast wasteland. There were no grass, sparse dead trees, and the sky was dark with pollution.
When I turned back my home was no longer a comforting beautiful home. It had transformed into a rundown shabby old barn.
I asked, "Daddy what does this mean?"
His answer was, "The Keepers! They breed us. They maintain us. They keep us around for food."
His parting words were, "Open Your Eyes!"

07/26/2021Nice flash Fiction which typically leaves many questions unanswered, such as "Who are the Keepers?" "Why are the parents and other family-members so resigned to their fate?" "Are the Keepers human?" In short, this can be used as an excellent introduction for a novel or a longer short-story since it arouses a strong interest and a desire to know.

08/01/2021Being bred for food reminded me of the Morlocks who lived underground and who bred the Eloi, humans who lived on the surface, in a future Earth, for food, in the story, The Time Machine.

07/26/2021Since my parents passed away I have also been beset with repeated dreams in which I take their being alive for granted,. It is only after I awaken that I realize that they are gone, and wonder why that fact was not clear to me during my dreams.

07/26/2021Thank you Radrook. This story came about because of a dream. My Father passed away in 2009. I don't believe in dream messages but this stuck with me. I will have to work on this story.
