The alarms blared into my ear blurring my thoughts.
We hurriedly got into a line.
“Walk,” said the teacher.
Mixed chatter.
Laughter.
Trembling.
People.
As far as the first floor would reach.
Teachers.
Guarding their doors.
“Sit down,” said a lady.
I wrapped myself into a little ball.
In. Out. In. Out. In. Out.
My heart thumped.
It thumped out of my chest.
Thoughts of my life flew by.
Would this be how I went?
“Quiet!” shouted the principal.
An eerie silence filled the hall.
A girl grabbed my hand.
Breathe. She said rubbing me gently.
“I hope this is how I go,” a student next to me chuckled.
That did not help.
In. Out. In. Out. In. Out.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
Mixed whispers within the line of teachers.
Phones out watching the storm get closer.
“Follow me in a line,” the principal said to my class.
I did as told.
Pitter patter. Pitter patter. There was rain on the roof of the bus parked outside.
The door opened swiftly. Unlike usual.
I sat next to a friend. Shaking.
Shake. Shake. Trembling. Shake.
She grabbed my arm, and started rubbing it.
Much like the girl from earlier.
We arrived at the theater building, and we filed in.
Minutes went by.
Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
“We are free to go,”
I travel to my next class.
The sirens wailed once more.
Scared expressions covered the face of all.
Except for the few who kept snickering.
The hall. That crowded claustrophobic hall.
Time passes slowly.
In out. In out.
I think of my life once more.
Memories flashing through my head.
People popping up in my mind.
Mom.
Family.
Friends.
Aqquarintes.
I wasn’t ready to go.
All because of a tornado.

08/27/2021Wow! What a great but traumatizing adventure. I grew up in Tornado alley. Had a few close encounters. Thank you for sharing.
