Once upon a time, there was a boy named Derek. He lived in a small, dark town named Flowery Valley. The town was anything but flowery. It was a gloomy place to be. There were dried up, black flowers. The trees looked like they hadn’t been watered in a long time, but still somehow are producing oxygen.
There were clouds above the whole town, no matter whether it was sunny the next town over. There was always a humid, cold feeling lingering around. The people there were exactly like the feel of the town; gloomy. Everybody walked slowly, with their head down. Nobody seemed to care for one another, not even their own family.
Derek, however, was different. He was a bright child, despite being brought up in that gloomy atmosphere. He used to talk a lot, even if nobody paid attention to him. He didn’t care. But deep down, he hated his town and family. Everybody was so gloomy. Nobody had anything nice to say. It was all “Shut up Derek!” or “Give it a rest, kid.” But the worst one of all was his own mother.
She shouted at him even if he wasn’t saying or doing anything. She hated him from the day he was born. Sometimes, she even kicked him out of the house. “Learn the real world, Derek!” was her favorite thing to shout at him.
“Would it really kill my family and the town people to just listen to me?” Derek thought sadly, sitting on his front porch. His mother had once again kicked him out of the house. This time, it was because he was again complaining about his middle name. Derek’s full name was Derek Darra Washington. He hated his middle name because it sounded like a girl’s name.
Of course, he never could say a single word about it without getting an earful from his mother. This time, for some reason, his mother’s mood must’ve been really bad, because she just straight away kicked him out.
Derek was 12 years old. His mother used to kick him out of the house for as long as he could remember. So, after the billionth time, he didn’t even seem fazed. He just sat on his front porch, thinking.
“Why don’t the people here like good news? They always hate when I tell them happy things, like people getting rescued from danger and stuff like that. I mean, they like when I tell them how the people come to near death situations, but they get all grumpy when I tell them that they get rescued. They are so weird. I’m going to figure out what is wrong. I am going to go to the town mayor to see if he knows anything.” Derek thought.
He jumped up to his feet. He started walking across the town to go to the town mayor’s house. His name was Peter Baggins. He was a mean, grumpy old man. He lived with his wife, who was just like him. Mean, grumpy and old.
Derek wasn’t too enthusiastic about meeting Peter. But he couldn’t leave the mystery of his town unsolved, either. So he went to the other side of the town. He breathed in the air. It smelled sour and dusty, as usual. He finally reached Peter’s house. He knocked on the door.
Nobody answered. Derek tried the doorknob. The door creaked open. He peered inside. No one was inside. He went in.
He heard talking in the other room. Derek pressed his ear against a door connecting another room with the room he was already in. “But how can we go there? It’s too dangerous.” He heard someone say.
He guessed that it was Peter. He then heard a woman’s voice, probably Peter’s wife. She said, “Oh, come on! We can disguise ourselves! We have to keep them under the medicine.
You don’t want to have a riot on your hands from stealing the town’s money, do you now, Peter? By the way, it was an excellent idea to give them those drugs for sadness! It worked like a charm! Since their thinking power has been wiped out, we can easily take their money from the bank, without them ever knowing! But the drugs could only work for 12 years. Now, honey, we have to go to the Pond from which we can get the drugs!”
Derek gasped. “So my town people weren’t always like this. They have been poisoning us! It has only started from the year I was born. I wonder how they have been poisoning us.” He thought. He heard Peter speak again. “But will the green weed still be there? Also, you should go there! You don’t show your face in the town much, so nobody will recognize you!”
“Yeah, you’re right. Sounds like a plan to me! I’ll go tomorrow, in the afternoon. The juice of the weed is so transparent! We’re so lucky, Peter! Because the juice is transparent, we can easily mix it into the water! Too bad that the water doesn’t have any effect on that town boy named Derek. I only wish that we could’ve stopped his mother from giving him the cure, goat milk.
That would make for a perfect emotional movie. How she gave the milk to her 3 month old Derek, before the drugs started working on her. Oh well. It’s him against the whole town. We can make him gloomy and be one of us.” Peter’s wife replied.
As soon as she said that, a tear fell from Derek’s cheek. He never knew that his mother had done such a life - saving thing for him. He decided that the next afternoon, he will stop Peter and his wife, for the good of the town.
The next afternoon, Derek saw the time on his watch. It read 3:30. It was the perfect timing. His parents were taking their short nap. Derek knew that he had 2 hours till his parents woke up.
He sneaked out of his house. He made his way to the Pond. It was easy to locate it. There was only one town, and he knew his way to it. It was close by. He went there and saw that Peter’s wife was nowhere to be seen. That meant that he had got there first.
He found the weed which Peter and his wife were talking about. He pulled it out of the pond. He stuffed it in a bag he had brought with him from home. Derek looked around. Nobody was in sight.
He plucked out all the weeds from the Pond and stuffed them into his bag. “Ok. Now I only have to get some goat milk. According to Peter’s wife, that’s the cure for their drugs. I’m sure I will get the goat milk from the next town over.” Derek thought.
He sneaked back into his house, took some money, and went out. His parents were still sleeping.
Derek went to the other town. Luckily, it was just a few yards away from Flowery Valley. The other town’s name was Crocker’s Pit. It was the exact opposite of his town. There was greenery and colorful flowers everywhere. The town people were really friendly and nice. He wished that he was born in Crocker’s Pit instead of Flowery Valley.
He entered the town. “G’day, mate!” Somebody said to him. “Uh, yeah, good afternoon.” Derek replied. He saw a barn full of animals. He went inside. There was a middle aged man standing there. He wore a brown hat, with a red checkered shirt and denim jeans. His head was almost bald, except for the fringes of white hair on the area close to his ear.
“Hello, kid. How may I help you?” he asked. “Hello. Are you the owner of this barn?” Derek asked. The man smiled and said, “Yes, I am. Do you want to take milk?” Derek nodded yes. “Which type?” The man asked. “Goat milk, please.” Derek said. The man went to the back of the barn and got some goat milk.
“That’ll be $20. Is this milk enough?” The man said. Derek paid him and replied, “Yes. Thank you.” The man smiled again and said, “Your welcome!” Derek got out of the town.
He went inside his own town and checked the Pond. There, he found an old woman screaming in frustration. Derek assumed that she was Peter’s wife. He went closer to the Pond to hear what she was screaming. He hid behind a tree. Derek saw that she was circling the Pond and screaming, “Why isn’t there any of that weed? I need it! Somebody took it!” repeatedly.
Derek went to the town’s water tank. He opened it and added the goat milk. He poured some in a few glasses which were beside the tank.
He took a tray and knocked on people’s doors. He offered them the drink, telling them that it tasted very yummy. The town people drank it. One by one, the effect of the drug wore off. They thanked him, after Derek told them the whole story. He told them to spread the word. They agreed and began their work. Derek knocked on doors and kept on offering them. Lastly, he went to his house. His family was still sleeping.
He woke them up and gave them the drinks and, as soon as they got off the drug’s effect, he told them the whole story. They, of course, thanked him.
“Thank you Derek for giving that milk! You’re the best!” Everybody told him. Derek smiled and said, “Your welcome!” His family offered to help him in his plan. He accepted their help and told them their roles.
The plan was that now, he and his family will go to Peter’s house. With a few pans and other utensils, they will knock Peter and his wife out. Then they will leave them far, far away from their town.
He and his family took the utensils and packed them in a bag. They all went out and sneaked inside Peter’s house. There, they could see that he and his wife were crying. But when they saw Derek and his family, armed with the utensils, they screamed. Derek started slamming the pan onto Peter’s head. His mother helped him with another pan.
His father and sister knocked out Peter’s wife. Within a few minutes, they were done. They carried Peter and his wife out of their house and left them on the ground, a few miles away from their town.
It didn’t take much time to walk the few miles, as Derek and his family exercised a lot.
When they returned, the whole town was there. Everybody congratulated Derek.
“Is there anything we can do for you, Derek, in return for saving our lives?” A town lady said. Derek blushed and said, “Well, there is one thing you can do.” Everybody curiously asked him what it was.
Derek replied, “I want to change my middle name! I hate it. It’s Darra, for those of you who don’t know. It sounds like a girl’s name! I want to change it to something like Gilbert.” Everybody laughed. They told him that now everybody will change his middle name to Gilbert. Derek was very happy. After that, everybody lived happily in that town and renovated it.
After a few months, the whole place looked really great and lived up to its name. Everybody lived happily ever after in the sweet town.
