"It Is What It Is"
Born 1955, M, from Norwich NY, United States“It Is What It Is”
By herm Sherwood-Sitts
I was having a hard time trying to find work. The economy in our area was in pretty rough shape. I had been working as a cable lineman outta’ town and the construction had ended, that’s when I answered the newspaper ad.
Needed: someone to cut and split wood.
I had done this type of labor before for my dad and for myself. I drove to the address and there on the front lawn was a huge Elm tree that the Highway Dept. had cut down. When I knocked on the door an old German lady answered. We agreed on $150 to do the job.
Well the old Elm was tougher than I had anticipated. My chainsaw cut it fine, but when I tried to split it with a go-devil it would just bounce off. When I used a wedge it took forever because of the stringy grain of the wood. The only option was to borrow my father-in-law’s wood splitter. Of course this was going to cut into what little profit I was going to make.
It took me three days to cut and split the wood. The old woman looked at the huge pile of wood on her front lawn and invited me in for lunch. As she served me a sandwich she had a somber look and tears were building up in the corners of her eyes. That is when she told me, “I am sorry…I don’t have the money to pay you.”
Looking around her rundown abode, I realized she was having a hardship worse than I was. I told her it was ok and thanked her for the sandwich. I then stacked what firewood would fit into her wood shed and left.
On the way home I thought to myself… “It Is What It Is”.

12/26/2021Very inspiring story, full of motivation and hope. Your humane reaction is better than a fortune Sir.
Whatever sum of money you would receive , it would fly quickly and disappear, but your teaching will stay alive.
The good always pays off.
My respect

12/20/2021My first thought was, how dare the city cut down a huge tree and leave it laying on someone's front yard for them to deal with. If I were you I would have tried to collect payment from the city. I don't blame her for her deception when she had no one to help her and no money to pay someone. You were a very kind and generous angel to her when she was desperate. Anyone else would have likely been abusive upon learning they would not be paid for 3 days of labor and expense. Yet you went above and beyond the call of duty by stacking the wood and cleaning up the mess after the fact. You're a better human being than most of us, Herm. Thanks for sharing the story, and Merry Christmas to you and yours.

12/20/2021Well... I guess if she asked them to leave the tree for her use, then they can't be blamed. But that makes her all the more manipulative and deceitful. I guess she was desperate for some home heat, but what she did is still shameful. She could have asked a local church or charity group for help. All the more 'bravo' goes to you for keeping your cool and going above and beyond after being ripped off. Even if someone is in need that does not give them the right to steal from others, and to lie and cheat, which is what she did. Your rising above it and showing her a kindness she did not deserve is all the more admirable, Herm.

12/20/2021Thank you JD. She asked the Highway Dept. if she could have the fire wood. Sometimes I have a temper, this is one of those times where it wouldn't do any good. It was clear she had nothing and needed help. Merry Christmas my friend.

12/20/2021And that Herm, is why a real Christmas, "is what it is". I cried when I read this because I have been in both your place...and hers...at times in my life. And the Herm's of the world are why I made it through them.
Big hugs buddy.
