“No, you can’t ever tell him who you really are. Or anyone else either. Never. Do you understand?”
Marcia teared up as she nodded. She was too emotional to answer her Prime so she just continued to seal up her outfit for the day. She pressed the seam together with her fingers, fumbling a bit with the hood. Once it was sealed, she picked up her book bag, smartphone, and stormed out the front door. Her Primes both looked through the Bay Window as they saw her wipe her eyes and walk slowly to the Bus Stop.
“Maybe we are too hard on her. She is just a Newby.”
Both of them had already sealed up for the day, so they put their arms around each other for comfort and reassurance. The First Prime spoke to his Equal:
“Nobody can know. You know that. So does she. It is just a phase. All Newby’s go through it. Remember when we met?”
His Equal squirmed a little closer. A shy smile on her hood. She kissed him lightly on the cheek.
“Yes. Yes, I do.”

Ed waited by the bus stop. He knew she would be here soon. He had known her for more than five years. They had hit it off that very first day at school back in Eighth Grade. She seemed not to know how the doors worked on her locker. Later he had to teach her how to use money to buy her food at the Cafeteria. And then at recess, he had to teach her how to swing. He was smitten by the end of the day. He had never met anyone like her.
She laughed at all her mistakes. Like when she made that bizarre caricature of him out of the condiments in the Cafeteria. Mustard, catsup, mayonnaise smeared all over her tray into an Andy Warhol like portrait of himself. He thought it was beautiful. The Teacher watching over the Lunch Room was not pleased. She gave the poor girl a lecture on wasting food. Her only defense was: “I like the colors.”
Later she used real paint (after he quietly told her not to eat the paints anymore…please?) and made a portrait for him. His Mother hung it over the fireplace in their house. They had offers into the five figures for folks wanting to buy that Portrait. His Mother wouldn’t let them have it. He wouldn’t either. Even when they asked who the Artist was, they wouldn’t tell. She had made it clear that if anyone found out about her Talent, she would never speak to them again.
“My Primes…er…my Parents would never forgive me, and we would have to move to somewhere else.”
Ed was used to those weird comments she made - where she changed words in the middle of a sentence. Or hinted that her Family had a secret that could destroy their future. He learned to keep quiet when he saw her do something like that portrait. Or the time she accidentally drew out Einstein’s Field Equations in Calculus Class without even touching her calculator. He challenged her about it later. She laughed (like she usually did):
“Ed, I am just really good at Math. You know I want to be an Engineer.”
After that, she just got straight A’s like the other real Nerds. But no hint of how far beyond the Class she really was. Ed thought she was just being humble.
And so it went. Just an ordinary case of Puppy Love growing into something of more substance. By their Senior Year, they were each other’s first “True Love”. She knew he was going to ask her to marry him at Christmas. She told her Prime and her Equal that she would accept. And that had led to the furious reminder that she could never, ever, under any circumstances tell Ed who she really was.
She cried as she unsealed her outfit and hung it in the closet. She tossed and turned all night wondering what she should say to Ed. She knew it would break his heart. It was breaking hers.
*****
It was Christmas. Ed would be over soon. All of them had sealed their outfits early - just in case Ed showed up sooner than later. It was a good thing too, because Ed showed up with some gifts almost as soon as it would be polite to show up. It was Christmas…so slight faux pas in etiquette were allowed. So bright and early Christmas morning Ed was at their door. They had to smile at his bubbling enthusiasm. Except for her…she knew why he was so super excited. And it made her sad. So sad that Ed pulled her to the side (after a quick kiss under the mistletoe that her Parents supervised for both duration and passion- that made it a real quick and light kiss. And that made even Ed and his True Love- laugh out loud.
He was in the Kitchen leaning up against the sink. She was crying. He had shown her the ring. He had told her he loved her. She knew it was true. In ways that Ed could never know…or understand. She had to tell him ‘No.” He didn’t understand. She tried being gentle, and the tired old line that has broken the hearts of many a teenager were uttered out loud:
“I think we need to see other people. Can’t we just be friends?”
Blinded by tears and the pain of a heart breaking in two…Ed thanked her quietly for all the good times. He kissed her one time on her forehead, and squeezed her hands.
“I…I …I hope you find the one you want someday. I want you to be Happy.”
With that Ed raced from the kitchen, surprising her Parents as he went right by them without noticing them at all. He left the front door open and walked out into the snow. Her “Mother” reacted first. Grabbing Ed’s coat from the closet and opening the door to yell out:
“Ed! You forgot your coat. You will freeze to death. Ed…Ed!”
He never heard her. He just kept walking.
Then she turned just in time to see her “daughter” rush up the stairs to her room.
“Just leave me alone, okay?”
Bewildered her Parents stood side by side in front of the big bay window. Finally the Prime whispered to his Equal:
“Some Merry Christmas, eh?”
*****
Ed hadn’t spoken to her since Christmas Day. Everyone at school was shocked. They never thought those two would ever break up. Even as teenagers they knew True Love when they saw it, and Ed and her were what they all hoped to have someday. Ed lost some weight. He became even quieter than he usually was. She just sort of trudged through her day. They didn’t have any classes together…and he never came near her table at lunch. Even some of the Teachers wondered if they should intervene.
The Principal warned them all:
“I know it is a shame to see young love die. But we have all been there. Sometimes when you are young - it seems like the end of the world when you break up. But most of us make it through it. Just keep an eye on them both. In a few weeks, or a month or two…they should be able to move on. Young people are resilient.“
The Teachers nodded. Only one of them had married their High School Sweetheart. So they took it as a Natural Progression. But still…they were such a cute couple. They kept their eyes out for any of that awful teenage angst that led to dark thoughts and terrible decisions. They didn’t see anything except two unhappy Teens navigating a sad ending.
And then came Valentine’s Day.
*****
She was surprised. Ed was at the Bus stop. He hadn’t taken the bus since Christmas Break. He would walk to school…alone. The bus would pass him as he trudged through the snow and cold. She would wipe her breath from the window so she could see him. He never looked up. It broke her heart every day. She would press her lips on the window and whisper: “I still love you Ed. I just can’t tell you.” And she would cry. Becky, her best friend, would put her arm around her.
“You have to move on girlfriend. It isn’t fair to either of you.”
She said those words but inside she thought: “Don’t be stupid, get back together with Ed!”
And they would finish the ride to school in silence.
But now, Ed was there. At the bus stop. He had a card in his hand. She knew it was for her. She braced herself, remembering, once again, the lecture she had gotten. She let a small smile leak out.
“Ed, are you taking the bus again?”
Ed shook his head. He didn’t say anything. She wanted to hear his voice again. She so wanted to hear that voice say something, anything, to her. But he didn’t speak. He never even made eye contact. He just handed her the card and walked away. Becky stood a few feet away. Her heart pounding…hoping with every fiber of her being that this was the moment they made up. She was hoping for tears of joy, hugs, and blatant passionate kisses no matter who was watching.
Her hopes were smashed when Ed just simply turned and walked away.
She watched him go, the card held in her hand…forgotten. The Bus came.
“Well, open it!”
Becky squeezed in next to her best friend on the bus. Like most girls her age, she had a curiosity that bordered on eagerness for anything remotely romantic or dramatic.
“Okay.”
The both cried when she opened it. It was a picture of that first tray portrait done in mustard, catsup and mayo. She never knew he had taken a picture of that portrait so many years ago. Underneath he had written these words; “I don’t know who your Valentine will be this year. But if you have one, make one of these for him. He will love it. And you. This is goodbye from me. I am transferring over to Bay Village High School. My Parents met with the Principal and the School Board…and a shrink. And they all thought it was a good idea for me not to be where you are. I think it is a bad idea for me to be anywhere you are not. But I know they are right. So, I hope you get to be someone’s Valentine…you were mine.
Goodbye. Love always. Ed.“
For the rest of the bus ride, everyone stared at the two Senior girl’s blubbering and bawling in the last row.
That night she told her Prime and Equal to please send her away.
“Where?”
“Anywhere, just not here. I can’t take it anymore.”
She showed them the card from Ed. Later that night they went to her room.
“We called Ed. He will be here in about fifteen minutes. (He was there in ten!) You can tell him the truth.”
They had discussed it. They thought Ed could handle it. And he would know why they could never be a couple. He would know the truth…and that would set them all free. They knew Ed could keep a secret. And would. So they gave her permission to tell him.
Ed stood in the kitchen. He was out of breath from sprinting from his house to hers. It wasn’t Olympic speed, but damn close. She had met him at the door, and drew him into the kitchen. He was regaining his breath. He could see the tears in her eyes and feel his own burning on his cheeks. What was she going to say. Why did her Parents say:
“Ed, we want you to come over as soon as you can. She has something to say to you. And we do too.”
He had dropped his phone and ran right out the door.
Now he stood just a few feet away from her. His heart trying to break out of his ribs to get to her.
She looked at him. At his eyes. And she looked deep. She took a breath and spoke:
“Ed, I know you Love me. (He clenched his feelings…he had no idea where this was going) I…I …I love you too. (Ed’s heart sprang up with joy) But could you love me if I didn’t look like this (using a gentle flowing sweep of her hand to include her teenage body and girl next door face)?”
Ed was confused. How could she look like anything else.
“I would love you no matter what you look like. I love you…not your body.”
Her heart sprang with joy. But she knew the real test was coming now. So she kept her heart from leaping out to join his.
“Okay, Ed. Here’s the truth. I am not from here. Not anywhere close. “
Ed interrupted:
“Where are you from, some other country?”
She dismissed his comment with a wave of her hand.
“No Ed. I am not from another country, but another planet. One far far away. And on that planet…I don’t look like this.”
Ed’s mind was reeling, but his love for her steadied him as it dawned on him. She was telling the truth.
“So…what do you look like on that planet that makes you think I won’t love anymore? Are you ugly or something?”
She laughed. He loved that laugh.
“No, on my planet I am considered kind of cute.”
“So, show me.”
This was it. The moment that would cost her Ed. The smile slipped from her face. She unsealed her outfit. Including the hood. She let it drop to the floor. All pretense gone. The secret out.
Ed gaped. Who wouldn’t have. He struggled to find the right words.
“You…you…are beautiful…but thin!”
Now it was her turn to gape. Her mouth slack. He wasn’t running away. He was still looking at her with love in his eyes. She stepped out of her outfit puddled on the floor and stepped towards Ed.
His arms reached out. He was a bit cautious…and that made her laugh again. He was hugging her but like she was made of porcelain and might break. She hugged him a bit tighter and lifted him off his feet.
“Ed, I am not fragile. In fact, as you can see, I am as strong as you…almost. “
She giggled. So did he.
Hand in hand they went into the living room. Her parents had closed all the drapes, blinds and doors. They stood transfixed as Ed and their “daughter” walked in the room.
“Meerla! Your outfit…you aren’t wearing it.”
She smiled and squeezed Ed’s hand. He squeezed back.
“I don’t need it. Ed loves me just the way I am.”
Her parents took one look at each other and nodded.
Without another word, they pealed back their outfits and let them drop. They were taller than Meerla…but not by a whole lot. But just as thin. They expected Ed to say something. He did.
“Your name is Meerla?”
They all laughed. It would be alright.
They asked Ed later that night, without any outfits on, what he thought they looked like.
He told them honestly:
“To me, you look like stick figures with a Human head…and hair. Your ears are a bit bigger and pointier. And the blue skin is pretty cool.“
They all agreed.
“Stick figures. That’s pretty close.”
Ed made them laugh again when he said:
“But I am really glad you have lips.”
Meerla leaned over and kissed him.
“Me too.”
Postscript: Ed never transferred to Bay Village High School. Meerla and Ed went to their Prom. Ten years later, they let the rest of the world know that Alien Life existed. Everyone had a picture of the day that Ed and Meerla told the world that there was Alien life. She had dropped her outfit, he had turned to her and kissed her. Then they both turned and waved to the People of Earth from the podium at the United Nations.
The caption under the photo said it all:
“Stick figure or not, those two are in love.”
Sticks (as they are still called) revealed themselves all over the world. Since so many of them had made friends with the “Fleshies” (as they called us Humans) and lived among us for generations, the Sticks were welcomed by most people. They offered us Space Travel, we offered them a second home as their’s died.
Ed became Meerla’s Prime, and she his “Equal.” Becky just called them silly in love.
And that made the News too.
