'Future' story challenge.
Imagine a future where children rule. A future where young children run every aspect of our lives. From the minute we get up in the morning until the minute we go to bed at night, they have total control over us. The children are in charge. These young beings are extremely intelligent and wise. In this future all children are highly respected and treated with the utmost care and understanding. They are loved beyond the meaning of the word. Fun, joy and peace presides over everything in this new world. Children have the first word and the last word in everything. In this world citizens are considered adults at the age of twelve. At that time the children initiate them into the adult sector. Everyone is happy. The sun shines every day. This is the perfect world.
Could it happen? If so, this is what it might look like.
The wonderfully energetic young three, four and five-year olds have control over what games and toys are made at the “Fun and Games Factory”. There's a manufacturing plant in every community. Remember I said the children of the future are extremely brilliant. Only movies, shows and games which are approved by the curious six, seven and eight-year-old group will air on the special network named “The Young People's Network". Therefore toys, games or TV shows that promote hate, violence, or bullying are non-existent.
In this world you can eat all the junk food and sweets you can handle. You can eat whatever you want, whenever you want and as much as you want. No one says anything, in fact it is encouraged by the children. Bakeries, restaurants, deli's and such are all run by the very ambitious and outgoing nine-to-eleven-year-old category. These 'tweens' love to cook and they will make you the most delicious foods your taste buds and sweet-tooths have ever experienced.
Hunger does not exist. Homelessness is unheard. There's no such thing as haves and have-nots because everyone shares their possessions. There are no orphaned children if parents were to die because people willingly take them into their homes. Child abuse does not exist. No one even knows what that is in this world.
There is no need for a government because residents within the communities instinctively know what is needed and everyone agrees. All citizens get along regardless of color, race, or gender. People and children help one another in all facets of society.
Many common jobs are not needed in this very unique world. There are no schools, so no need for teachers. Children are born already very very smart and learn quite swiftly what they need to know. No one ever gets sick, fat, gets injured or needs surgery of any kind. All citizens big and small stay in great mental and physical health. All babies are born at home healthy and strong and grow very fast. So, there are no doctors or nurses. Fighting or disagreeing are absent in this world. There are no wars or hatred, therefore no need for jails, prisons, or punishments. Police are not needed because everyone obeys the laws put forth by the children. Remember this is the perfect world.
Let's take a look at a typical day.
Everyone sleeps till ten A.M. At that time all alarm clocks around the world begin ringing signifying it's time to get up. You begin your day with a shower or bath (with lots of bubbles), brush your teeth (If you want to), and get dressed. Grown-ups make breakfast which usually consists of pancakes, waffles, lots of syrup, sugar, cookies, candy, sweetened cereal, pizza, cake, pie. Basically, any kind of junk food is provided.
Once breakfast is over parents head off to their jobs. Every adult's career is chosen by the highest-level children within a community. Some children play all day while others have authority over businesses. All organizations are run by children. They are the Chief Executive Officers (CEO's), Chief Financial Officers (CFO's), and the Chief Operations Officers (COO's) of all establishments. The bosses (children) are held in high regard for their intelligence and professionalism. All workplaces experience a happy-go-lucky atmosphere. The work pace is very relaxed. The pre-adolescent “tweens” create opportunities for fun within the workday. The workers get many breaks and lots of time for relaxation and enjoyment. A workday for both adults and children consists of four hours (11-3). A work week is three days, Tuesday thru Thursday, leaving a four-day weekend. After the workday is over, adults and children go home where they spend the rest of the time going to amusement parks, beaches, swimming pools, arcades, bowling, trips and the like. Parents take the children anywhere they wish to go, and they joyfully engage in the fun activity with their children. If they don't want to go anywhere, there are lots of activities to do at their homes such as play games, play outside, ride bikes, swim in their own pools. In this world electronics are forbidden except at work.
Amazingly there are Casino's in this futuristic world that are run by the children. And the best part is they pay off exceptionally well but in candy, gum, small toys, stickers, tattoos. If you're lucky you might get a coin or two that you can put back in the machine. The kids and big people love it.
Children plan their own birthday parties. If the child is under the age of three, an older sibling does the planning. Adults have no control over any part of the child's special day. It's not uncommon to have a hundred kids at the party. Workers from the bakeries within the community bring loads of treats for the children. They play and eat all day into the early evening hours. The special birthday child receives tons of presents, cake and their favorite ice cream. Yes, in this world children do grow older each year. They will eventually reach the old age of twelve where they no longer are in charge over anything. They become an adult.
When the day comes to a close adults begin to get ready for bed. All adults must be in bed by ten P.M. They need twelve hours of sleep to be able to do their jobs well and keep up with the ambitions of the children. Children don't have a bedtime. They stay up as late as they want.
When children finally go to sleep and darkness overtakes daylight all is quiet and peaceful until the clocks around the world begin buzzzzzing at ten A.M. At which time all life in this new world begins again!

01/26/2022Thank you so much Lillian! It would be nice to not have all the responsibilities and worries! Only in a child's world! Nirvana all the way! At least to a child in the future world.

01/24/2022Shelly, very cool entry for the 'future' challenge. I know some grandkids who would totally agree this is the way to go. Decades ago my then little daughter reacting to my question as to whether or not there should be a 'kids in control week,' responded with "Tomorrow we start!" Take care, Jerry

01/24/2022Thank you for your kind words Jerry. Your young daughter's words were adorable and spoken right from the heart of babes. I read this story to my 8 and 11 year old grandbabies. They both said they would gather some friends and begin creatng a world like that today! LOL

01/22/2022Shirley that is a wonderful world you have created. All the joy and glee of a child's existence without any responsibility or accountability. I love that little world you just made. There are some holes in the logic and methodology of pulling off of world like that ; but then again that's how children think. Lol
I think we could learn a lot about creating a future like the one you thought up!
Thanks for posting: this is a wonderful submission for the future challenge. Good job!

01/22/2022Shelly,
The fact that you are experimenting with "genres" is what I mean when I said search for your Voice. Have fun and explore. I can recommend two books that I think everyone of us Author's can learn from" Stephen King's : On Writing. Half the book is about his personal life, the other half is about writing...and that half is full of gems!
The other book has a strange title: "Your hate mail will be graded". by John Scalzi. John has written several Hugo and Nebula Award Winners, and some Television Shows too. But he started a Blog more than a decade ago. And he gets tons of "hate mail". So he grades them, explains how to use language, punctuation, style, and grammar. It is a fun read. But just like Stephen's books...tons of gems!
And don't forget to touch base with JD ...that woman is like have a Graduate Assistant for English Prose...and her critiques are always spot on. And there you go...the last advice you will get unsolicited from an old man. We do tend to spew out the lessons we have learned. LOL
Smiles, Kevin

01/22/2022Thanks for your added advice! I am experimenting with different genres to see where I feel comfortable. I'm only on story number 11. Yes, with more experience and continuing to read such awesome stories from amazing authors here on Story Star, I have no doubt I will get there soon! I have many ideas in my head just need to get them down on paper. Thank you for acknowledging that you see talent in my writing. That made my day and made me feel good!!

01/22/2022Color me embarrassed. So sorry about getting your name wrong! I had to laugh as I just told my wife that old joke: "Don't call me Shirley." As for your kind words, I thank you. You have a great imagination, you tell a good story, so all you have to do is polish and find your voice. That takes just a little more experience and confidence. So just keep writing. The Talent is there.

01/21/2022In some respects with what's going on in the world today, our world should be more like this. In other respects, this futuristic world seems monotonous. Great creative story!
