A Book's Journey
Born 1957, F, from Mesick Michigan, United StatesHi, my name is Bookie. My life began in the hands of a little three-year-old girl named Annabelle. I was created before then, but my life's journey started at the touch of these precious little hands.
It was June fifth, Annabelle's third birthday. Her mommy and daddy had a special day planned for her. Her grandma and grandpa and lots of little friends attended her party. Balloons and colorful decorations adorned the back yard. There were lots of presents wrapped in brightly colored birthday paper. I was wrapped in a piece of brown paper from a sack. Tucked between Princess Ariel and Jasmine I waited for Annabelle to unwrap me.
When it was time to open presents, Annabelle wasted no time. She unwrapped dolls, puzzles, doll stroller, play food and other toys. I waited patiently while package after package was unwrapped. She was so happy, laughing and giggling. I knew she would love me. I couldn't wait for her to open me.
Suddenly she ran off playing with her dolls and baby stroller. I was left alone on the table. I tried to holler for her, “Annabelle, you forgot me. I'm here waiting for you.” But she didn't hear me.
Then I heard her mommy say, “Annabelle honey, you have another gift to open.” She ran over to the table and tore off the brown paper. Little Annabelle stood and looked at me, then she softly whispered, “pretty.”
I'm pretty? My cover IS shiny, and it sparkles. There is a princess on my cover. I'm pretty. She quickly picked me up and tossed me next to her dolly in the stroller. I was with her all day. Everywhere she went, she took me with her. She made me feel wanted, needed and loved.
When it was time for birthday cake and ice cream, I was there with her. She accidently sat me down on the princess cake, she giggled, I giggled. I got frosting on my spine, but I didn't care. She spilled some sticky yellow stuff on me. I think her mommy said it was apple juice. My pages stuck together a little but that was ok. Annabelle put me on her lap as she ate her cake and ice cream. A couple drops of ice cream dripped down my back, but I knew she would wipe me off and she did, with her tongue. It tickled.
“Time for bath Annabelle.”
“No! No! No! Annabelle screams as she runs from her mama. She drops me. She runs. She kicks me and steps on me. That hurts.
What is wrong with Annabelle? I think.
“Annabelle, stop!” her mama hollers. “We don't throw books. We don't step on books. Pick up your book.”
She stops. She cries. “No bath!”
Her mama says “Yes bath. You can take a toy with you. Daddy is picking up your toys. Tell him what you want to take in the bath with you.”
“Book.” Annabelle says.
She wants me. She wants me!
Annabelle takes her mama's hand and gently holds me in her other hand as we walk to the house.
In the bathtub she laughs and splashes water with her little hands causing water to go all over everything including me. I get water spots on me. She places her yellow rubber ducky on my cover. Then she knocks the ducky in the water. She grabs me and opens my pages. She tells a little story to her ducky. Slowly I slip out of her hands, down I go. “I'm drowning. Save me Annabelle.” Quickly, her mommy grabs me.
“Oh Annabelle.” her mama sighs as she begins to dry me off with something white and soft. Then her mama holds me by one of my corners. “Don't drop me.” I plead. Next, I feel warm air blowing through my pages. It feels so nice. I was starting to get cold. Warm air continues to blow between my pages. It doesn't take long for me to dry. I feel a little different, my pages feel rougher. As long as Annabelle still loves me it's ok.
Annabelle's mommy places me on something tall. I don't like being so far away from Annabelle. Her mommy finishes bathing and dressing her for bed.
“Ok Annabelle get your stuffed elephant and climb into bed. Daddy will be in soon to give you kisses goodnight.” I hear her mommy softly say.
Her mommy steps out the door. I hear Annabelle softly cry.
A tear slips from my corner. “Annabelle, it's ok, I'm here Don't cry.”
“Goodnight daddy's little pumpkin.”
“Bo, bo, book.”
Annabelle wants me!
“What do you want sweetheart?”
“Bo, book.”
“You want your book? Where did mommy put it?”
Annabelle jumps out of bed and runs over to where I was placed by her mommy.
“Oh, there you are.” I hear her daddy say, as he picks me up and carefully hands me to Annabelle.
She jumps back into bed. Her daddy covers her up. Annabelle lays me down against her warm neck. She wraps her little arm around me. This must be love.
As Annabelle slowly slips into dream land, I think about my first day on my journey. I've been stepped on, thrown, dripped on, gotten sticky, got wet, forgotten and found.
What a great first day I had. I love my little Annabelle and I know she loves me; I can feel it. I would not trade this life for anything.
As my journey continued Annabelle had a little sister named Allison. She loved me too! As I grew older my pages weakened and pulled from my center. The girl's mom taped me many times. Annabelle enjoyed reading my princess story to her younger sister but when she had to stop to do something she would bend my corners. My cover now lacks the glitter and sparkle it used to have. My front and back have become very dirty from all the wonderful use. Some of my pages have been torn and are taped. My pages are discolored.
All of this use and abuse brings joy to my aging heart. With no doubt I know I continue to be loved and cherished by these two beautiful young girls. I know the love will continue for years to come.
This has been my journey of love.

02/22/2022Thank you so much Brooklyn for your very kind words of encouragement. I had fun writing this story. I got the idea for this story from a memory when my son was little. He had a book about trucks. He loved that book and took it everywhere. Through the years it did get to looking pretty rough. I have another story titled It's a Child's World that you might like.
