Feather looked directly to the human eyes, making her say;
—Okey, okey, I’m sorry. Happy?
—Yes.
The human laugh a bit, while the cat wake up and walk through the bed to sit on the women’s stomach.
—I hear it. You’re sad, but, why? Whats wrong?
—Oh Feather—she said, with her sad voice—you’re always with me.
—Now, and ever.
When she was falling asleep again, she smelled something salad. She wake up and walk through her owner’s chest, sitting down, pitting her cheek next to the human’s one.
She wakes up and touches her owner’s cheek with her nose to call her attention, then jump from the bed to the nightstand, where a big poster of the flowers is in the wall.
—Human! Humaaaan!!
The women wake up and looked to the cat.
—What happen, Feather?
The human don’t seem to understand, so Feather look for a little photo of the flowers in the nightstand drawer. She grab it whit her mouth, and then jumped back to the bed, in front of the human. She let the photo next to the human’s foot, so she take it.
—The flowers? Do you want the flowers?—she stops for a second—or… you are going to look the flowers?
Feather nods.
—For me?
Feather nods again.
—Aww, you are the best cat ever— she wake up and walk to the kitchen- wait a minute.
Feather heard her favorite sound in the world, and the human returned with an open can of tuna for cats, and then sit on the floor, next to Feather.
—I’m not the one who has to make YOU happy? Why are you opening that can of tuna? For me?
—Come on kitty. If you want to do that travel, you must eat. I will not let you go without eating this full tuna.
—Got it. I like that idea, human.
Feather eat all the tuna of the can, and then sit next to the women to wash herself.
—Feather, take care of you, and please, if you don’t find the flowers in three days, return.
—I will find them, human.
She jump do the window next to the bed, and before crossing into the woods, she glanced over his shoulder at the human, who was still sitting on the plank floor in front of the empty can.
—I will miss you, kitty.
—I’ll return. I promise.
After some minutes walking, Feather find the path she used with the human a long time ago to get to the tree with the pink yellow spotted flowers.
—This path will lead me to the flowers.
She start walking, looking carefully where she was putting her paws.
She smelled carefully the soil she was standing on to find out if there was at least one scent trail left to show her the way, but she smelled only damp earth and the stale trail of a rabbit.
She walk until the sun start to fall.
She looked around looking for a place to sleep, and finally she find a whole down of a tree’s big roots.
In the morning, the cold air and the freezing light of sunlight wake her up. At first, she didn’t remember where she was.
She wake up and wash herself.
She start to fell in panic, and run through the trees and bushes to find the path, but she just find a rabbit hole that caught her paw. She fall down, feeling the pain in her trapped paw.
—Ahhh!
She tried to pull to get it out, but it just hurt her more. Suddenly, she feel how a little but sharp teeth bit her leg.
—Stupid rabbit!
She sit down, as she use her other paw to dig, trying to free herself.
—Are you trapped?
The strange voice make her jump, hitting her paw with even more pressure. Suddenly, a big cat with red fur and green eyes appeared from the bushes.
—Do you need help, kitty?
—Don’t call me kitty! Just get my paw out of this hole!
She screamed. The cat sighed and reached out to help her. They opened the hole by digging to release the pressure, so that Feather could get her paw out. Once outside, he licked it vigorously, ignoring the cat's presence.
—Why are you here?
—You don’t care.
—I do, ‘cause this is my territory.
She stopped one second to think what to said.
—Im looking for the flowers.
—What flowers?
—Pink yellow spotted ones.
—Ooh, that flowers. Where do you come from?
—Why should I told you? You’re a stranger.
—I just want to know where are you from, pussy cat. Its not like other cats come from the sky, you know?
—Im NOT a pussy cat! Retract!
She stand up, with an offended air.
—I will if you tell me where are you from and why do you want those flowers.
She started to feel bad, cause he helped her and she was being so rude.
—Sorry.
—Why?
—I’m being rude with you, and you just saved me from a rabbit.
—It’s okey, i see that you’re stressed.
—Thank you. And, Im from the human’s house next to the forest. Im looking for the flowers for my owner.
—You’re a pet? A human send you to look for flowers?
—No! Im looking for the flowers for her, ‘cause she is sad, and I hate when she is sad, so I decided do go look for the flowers because she loves those.
—Wow. That’s a large story.
After a minute of silence looking to his eyes, she feel better.
—Umm, and, sorry to call you pussy cat.
—No problem,mustachioed.
—Mustachioed?? Thats how humans call cats in your home??
—Obviously not! Its just a joke, killjoy!
They both laugh until they can’t breathe, and Feather notices that the sun is now on top of the sky.
—Hey, umm—
—Flame, my name is flame.
—It makes sense! Im Feather.
—Jeje, sure it does. What where you going to said?
—Oh, yeah. About the flowers, do you know how to get to the tree?
He start thinking, and she began to get exited. Finally, he start talking.
—Well, its a long way to the tree, but i can get ‘ya there.
—Really? Amazing!!
She jumped on him in excitement, then licked his cheek. In a second, she realized that she was on top of him, and their faces were almost touching. She got up, blushed and full of shame.
—Sorry. I get exited.
She whispered.
—Don’t worry. I noticed that.
They both blush, and he start the way to the tree.
After a few ours of way, the cat's tail brushed her nose, making her sneeze.
—Pfft… you sneeze like a rabbit!
—Hey, thats cruel!
—Cruel? I’m just saying that you’re cute.
—Cute?! Only my human can call me cute!
She jump on him, making him fall again.
—Retract!!
—Okey! Okey! I do! I retract from calling you cute, kitty!
She got off him, satisfied.
—To be so big, you are weak.
—Weak? Thats what you think just ‘cause I never use my force on you?
—Maybe.
He stand up and turn to look her.
—Maybe?
—Flame, what are you doing? You just tangled your paws, you know?
He approached slowly, until their whiskers brushed. At that moment, Flame seemed to be three times as big as before, causing her to slowly shrink and back away.
—You’re scared, don’t you?
When he said that, she remembered that with her, he was completely inoffensive. She stood up and ruffled her hair to look twice as big.
—You don’t scare me. You could be strong, but you’re inoffensive.
—Are you sure?
She rolled her eyes. With the setting sun at his back, Flame seemed to be made of a thousand tongues of fire that vigorously licked at his fur. His green eyes reflected amusement, and it made her question if she could really trust him. But he seem to realize he was really scaring her, so he take a step back. She didn’t wanted to move, thinking that if she take a step back too, he was going to jump on her.
—Why did you do that?!
She screamed. Flame seem to be embarrassed, ‘cause he take another step back. Then, she saw in his eyes, the same fear she saw in her owner’s ones when she left.
—I was just joking, Feather.
—But it isn’t fun! I though you where going to jump over me!!
He stay quiet for a while.
—I would never do that, Feather.
He whispered something else that she couldn’t hear, but she don’t care about it. She start walking in his direction, and in his eyes appeared a spark of hope, but it died the most painfully way possible when she keep walking around him. He lowered his head before asking.
—Where are you going now?
—I will look for a place to sleep, and tomorrow you are going to lead me to the tree, and then I’ll return my owners house, and you will never see me again!
She know she didn’t have to said that, but she was so angry, that she think that he deserve it. After finding another tree with big roots, and digging a hole to sleep, she covered it with leaves and moss she find in the tree. When she lay down, she think about the can of tuna the human give her, and she remembered that she didn’t eat in all day. She was so hungry, that she couldn’t fall asleep. Then, she smelled a mouse, mixed with Flame’s scent.
—You’re awake, right?
She heard his sad voice over the starting rain.
—You are going to get wet.
He take his time to talk.
—I brought you this. You’re skinny. It evident you haven’t eat in a while.
He let down a plump mouse, and a huge turtledove.
—Thank you.
While she was eating the mouse, she noticed it was raining even more now, and Flame was completely wet.
—Go in.
—If I do, I will get you wet, and even if I want to, you don’t want to see me never again.
She waked up and go out from the roots in his direction. As she left, to his surprise, she grabbed him by the neck and dragged him to the small shelter. Once inside, she began to lick his fur dry. From one moment to another, she stopped, and stuck her nose to his, in the most tender way of affection possible. Flame's face filled with surprise when she stopped.
—Why did you d-do that?
—Because I realized that I start liking your company, and I’ve been rude.
He stand up and covered her with his warm body.
—I like your company too.
—You know what, this is the long way to said it.
—And what’s the short one?
—I love you.
They sleep like that, and Feather feel that she never sleep better than that night. In the morning of the third day, they start their travel with a hunting lesson.
—So you lay down, and then walk as silent as it’s possible, and then—he jumped through the bushes to catch the body of a mouse he let there to help her practice—jump as quick as you can.
—So, I must do all as silent and as quick as possible?
—You got it girl. Want to try with a real mouse?
—Yes.
—So, go get it, and remember, always get sure that the wind is blowing in your direction.
—Got it.
She walked in silence looking for a prey, and after a few minutes she find a plump vole, that she guessed that it shouldn’t be so fast.
Flame’s words suddenly run through her mind. She checked that the wind was blowing in her direction, and then get closer and closer. When she was on the position, another cat jumped on the prey, and kill it quickly.
—Hey! That was my prey!
—It’s not your prey until you kill it.
—But i was going to!
—First rule of hunting, pretty. Be the first one to jump.
—Feather?—Flame’s voice came through the bushes first than his body. When he saw the cat, they both bristle the fur—Owl.
—Flame.
—You know this is my territory. This are not your hunting zones.
—Now they are. This part of the forest is too big just for a cat—he look Feather— or for two cats.
Flame take a step in front of Feather.
—Don’t dare to get close to her.
—I do what I want.
Flame pushed Feather to to a bramble that was behind her.
—Stay here. I will protect you.
—Flame, what’s happening?
—I will defend my territory.
—Fighting?!
—If I have to.
She saw how he jump on Owl, that was looking the scene with disguise. He fall down without air, and start to twist to get out. The two cats rolled entangled in an uneven battle. Flame was much bigger and stronger than the cat, and that's why he was winning. Meanwhile, Feather was getting more and more entangled in the thorny bramble that Flame had pushed her into.
