Yumi is Fifteen Going On Sixteen
Born 1954, M, from St Louis Mo, United States.jpeg)
Oh to be 15 was a time of growing, learning, enjoying, and a time where one’s imagination is at the cross road of life. From then on some people shut down their imagination, too old, not a kid. Others open the can of the mind and let their imagination blossom.
Yumi, one time when asked, at fourteen, if she wanted a stuffed animal for Christmas, she huffed out, what, I am not a kid! Yet, when one came in the mail, she grabbed and hugged it with a smile of delight. Beautiful moments in life when a teenage girl understands she can be a young adult and still love a stuffy and have an imagination.
Now Yumi loves Harry Potter, read the books over and over. Knows the finest details, no doubt she not only could beat most in Potter trivia, but write a book of her own. Yumi wants to believe, she day dreams of Hogwarts and what being a student there would be like.
Like every kid in the world she finds life and just growing up a heavy experience from time to time. She just knows no one could possibly understand the things she feels. It was ok not being from a rich family, few were rich kids amongst her friends.
Yet, she was devastated to find out she had lived under the illusion things were normal and ok between her parents. When they separated she didn’t know who to blame. Some days in her own mind it was mommas fault. Oh and did she have a long list of reasons why.
After all she was always going on and on about chores and giving advice or instructions depending on Yumi mindset when given. So it stood to reason it had to be mommas fault.
Other days it was Poppas fault, and she had a list of reasons. Things like his lack of being attentive to the wants or needs of both her and momma.
She dreamed of casting spells that would bring her life back. The life of her family that seemed so good. Somehow things changed when she hit the magic age of 15, she began to realize, life is not always about who is at fault, because both were humans with imperfections. Plus real life was not how she dreamed it was.
A big light went on in her head too, they both loved her and wanted the best life for her they had to give. Maybe something changes in the brain from fourteen to fifteen. Somehow she realized she wasn’t to blame but perhaps maybe she had not helped make it easier for anyone.
It was also a time of decisions, graduation from Jr. High meant decisions about what high school to go too. Should she stay at home or go to the big city and start living on her own as her mother had.
Yumi, from her earliest memories had heard stores of mythical creatures. Living in the Philippines was to be as much a part of the mythical world as Harry Potters world. Stories of witch’s, curses, dragons and sea monsters and her favorite, mermaids.
In fact the river at the edge of her family home, was well known as the home of a mermaid. One time while sitting on the big rock in the deep part of the river, maybe she was only seven at the time, she was convinced she had caught a glimpse of the magical woman.
Then once while swimming she got caught in a whirlpool. She was only twelve but could swim like a fish. Yet, she was caught and scared, maybe she passed out. A arm went around her and carried her to safe waters. She is sure it was a mermaid, the eyes beautiful like blue sapphires, long blonde hair. She never told anyone because she was afraid they wouldn’t let her swim in deep part again.
There were stories of ghosts, and both dark magic and good magic. Perhaps if you really dig deep into Yumi, you might find she realized she had some of the magic. Maybe it was that magic that made her the kid in school with the highest grades.
Some might say it was only magic that made her beautiful and with a perfect complexion. Perhaps it was her magic that had brought a owl to her at 13, sharing secrets others could not hear. Might it be magic that made it easy for her fingers to play the guitar and keyboard, draw with skill levels of a aged artist?
Her room is her private space, momma does not understand but she has learned, if the room is messy, no body bothers to evade her there. It is a place where she can let go of her private thoughts, allow her mind to explore, and truth is even brood in peace.
She likes to lay in her bed and just look at the moon, perhaps a better word is watch the moon. If she would open up and tell you her secrets, she might open up about the witches she saw fly in front of the moon.
Maybe you didn’t know this but Yumi does, only novice witches need to use a broom, mature witches have mental spells that move them through space. How does she know this great mystery, while laying on bed, her pop music playing, her spiritual body leaves her physical body to explore.
Oh the things she could tell and teach us all. I am not at liberty to say to much more else she may allow her anger to explode and she could make my days miserable with unspeakable spells.
So what a shock while Yumi was just being a crazy kid, dancing in front of the mirrored window glass, she saw something we did not see.
Now perhaps it would not be fair to you, the reader, not to tell you this. This filipino girl can dance, she could have taught Michael Jackson some moves, if she were older I might of guessed she had. When she let go and danced, tossing her head back, she was soon lost in the vibe of the music. She flowed as if she was one of the notes being carried by air.
So in a moment of acting silly, just a quick dance, there it was staring at her. It was not a scary thing, but indeed frustrating. Often people thought her moody while she was just working through things in her head. Now this, she needed to talk to someone, but who?
Momma and Poppa were both smart, they both loved her beyond words. Either would fight a fire breathing dragon for her. Momma was always a good source for spiritual advice, very dedicated to her faith and love of God.
Poppa was very good with physical advice. Things like how to improve her grades or things she should strive on to be better prepared for the future. Yet, neither would understand this, and sadly though both tried, they didn’t really get her, especially at this age of decision. Of course they were once fifteen but things were different today.
As she stepped from the window and she took note soon as she stopped dancing, it was gone. She decided she needed to go to the village, only one person could help her and not think she needed to be locked up in a mental hospital.
The very next day Yumi went to the village to see great grandma. She did not waste time, it had kept her awake all night. One thing she loved about the village was the woods. A good thing no one had ever caught her in those woods sitting on a broom trying to make it fly. Ok laugh, but yes she was guilty and if alone would try again.
She had mastered how to make her spiritual being rove around but not her body. It was not easy to transport your body by the mind, but she wouldn’t give up.
Grandma wanted all the details, the face, eyes, color of skin, type of stare or maybe better said, what kind of gaze. After a bit of thinking and chewing on some sugarcane. She said, don’t worry about it.
She described it as this: remember when you saw as a young girl the mermaid. You impressed her, and she is trying to decide when to speak to you. You just caught her watching you. When the time is right she will visit you and perhaps bless you.
Now if you think that has calmed the mind or emotions of Yumi, you are wrong. Her Curiosity is like a fire in her mind. Now she is hoping to catch her again. So don’t be surprised if you see her dancing in front of the mirrored windows or bathroom mirror.
She is not showing off. Not trying to improve her dancing skills. She is searching, what will she do if she sees her watching. Well, she does not know, but it will be something!
