Whisky The Cat.
Born 1975, M, from Norfolk, United Kingdom
The cat in the photo was my cat who passed away 4 years ago.
The garden was massive, especially for a cat who spent most of his time roaming the area and sleeping under the bush near to the (what humans called) garage. His life was complete. How could things get any better? Then one day after it'd rained, and the grass was soaked through, the happy cat named Whisky hid under his beloved bush to escape a further downpour when through the front gate appeared a female cat that he found very attractive. Her coat was so colourful and well looked after, as it glistened in the sun's rays. The cat then had a decision to make. If he made himself known, would the other cat take offence? Well, the last thing he wanted was to upset the other moggy. All of a sudden, the other cat stopped and started smelling some blue flowers, then licked her lips. Whisky, still under the bush, thought it was now or never, as he may never get the chance to again. Whisky proceeded reluctantly to her, a little scared if the truth be told. When he stood only a short distance away, the other cat was too preoccupied with what she was doing to even notice the male cat. Without warning, it began to rain again, harder than before, and Whisky, not being a fan of this sort of weather, ran back to the bush to escape it. Once the cat was safely under the growth, it realised the female cat had followed him.
At first, Whisky couldn't think of anything to say as he just stood there.
The other moggy looked bemused by this, then said, "Hello, it's really nice to meet you. My name's Aria."
Aria, what a beautiful name, he thought. She also smelt nice. Being the first cat he'd ever met, he didn't really know what to say or do, when finally he replied, "My name's Whisky. Mummy gave me that name."
Aria smiled. "Is this your garden? It's so big."
"Yes it is," the cat answered proudly.
"Do any other cats come in here?" she asked, interested.
"No, it's just me. You're the first of my kind I've seen for ages," Whisky purred, enjoying himself now.
Aria liked the sound of that. "Would you mind me hanging around for a bit? Where I live, the garden is so small."
Whisky at this point was on Cloud 9. "That sounds brilliant. It'd be lovely to have a friend to play with."
   Aria seemed overjoyed by this.
Once the rain had stopped again, the two cats headed onto the lawn where they ran around in circles for the next few hours until Whisky's owner was heard calling from the front door, "Tea's ready."
"Coming, mummy," he shouted back. He turned to his new friend. "Are you about later? It'll be lovely to see you again. You're more than welcome to come here whenever you want."
Aria kissed him on the cheek. "I would love to," she said. "I better head home myself as my male owner will be wondering to where I've got to. We've only moved here recently, you see, after he'd split up with mummy and he'll be worried."
"See you later hopefully," Whisky said, then he headed happily enough to the house to eat his dinner.
  Â
...................
It was now night time as the moon shone handsomely in the sky. Whisky waited for his female friend to turn up. There was no sign of her. He kept himself busy through the night, but by the morning the cat felt sad.
Maybe she had something better to do than hang around with him?
  Â
After eating his bowl of breakfast, the cat decided to leave the safety of his garden and trek further afield in the hope he might find Aria.
In all his years of living here, he'd never gone further than the gate. Reluctantly, he walked through the open gate and onto the stony drive. From what he could see, there was a road a few metres away and more houses. How could this be? Without giving it much thought, he ran excitedly up the drive and to the end of it. Suddenly a thunderous sound made him jump, then a van flew past at speed. In all his years, the cat had never witnessed such a thing. Not wanting to get hit by anything similar in size, Whisky looked both ways before crossing the road to the other side. Once he'd made it in one piece, relieved, the brave moggy ventured onto a nearby lawn in search of his lady friend. Then, through sheer luck, he picked up her scent. A few seconds later, he found himself at a house where her scent was stronger than ever. He ran to the front door.
"Aria, are you there? I'm worried about you because you didn't turn up last night."
A few seconds had passed and at this point, the cat thought she wasn't interested in being friends anymore.
Then through the door her voice replied sadly, "When I left your garden yesterday afternoon I had an accident on the road and my owner took me to a place where they examined me. I would've come yesterday, but because of what happened, I'm stuck in this house for the next few weeks until I'm better. I'm so sorry if I let you down. I was so looking forward to it."
Whisky now felt bad. "Was it one of those big objects that move really quickly that caused this to happen, as I just encountered one myself for the first time?"
Aria was silent for a short while, then answered, "I think so. I'm not really sure. One minute I'm crossing the road. The next thing I'm aware of is being hit by something. After that, everything's a blur."
"That sounds truly awful," he said, feeling her anguish. It was so unfair. He'd only just met her, and now this had happened.
"Thank you for your concern. That really means a lot," she replied. " I suppose I better go back to my bed and rest. As daddy always says, rest is the only way to recover from such an accident. And I don't want to be stuck in the house for the rest of my life. Thank you for coming to see me. The moment I'm better, I'll come and visit. Goodbye, sweet Whisky."
With that, her voice was heard no longer.
The cat then headed home feeling sad.
...................
For the next two days, the cat just carried on as normal. The strange thing was, he couldn't get Aria out of his head. There must be a way to see her. Early the next morning Whisky kept watch on the house to see if there was any chance of him getting in there, even if it was for only a little while. Aria's daddy appeared from the front door dead on 7. Whisky noticed he left the door ajar while he put a bag into the back of his car, which was parked on the road in front of the house. Then the man proceeded back to the house where he disappeared inside for a short while before reappearing, holding a lunchbox. He then got into the vehicle. Suddenly that awful thunderous sound was heard as the car moved up the road. Moments later it disappeared from view.
For the next few mornings Whisky realised the man went through the same routine every day, (apart from weekends when he wasn't working) and dead on 2.30pm he returned home looking tired. One morning the cat sneaked in while the man put the bag into his car, then hid under the stairs until the man had left for good. That horrendous noise was heard from outside, then gradually faded. The first thing the cat did was search every room when finally he found Aria asleep in her little pink bed in a room upstairs. He waited patiently until she'd opened her eyes.
Aria looked at him, a little shocked. "How did you get in?" she asked, happy to see him.
After he'd explained everything, the female cat rubbed her nose against his. Which meant I like you very much.
Luckily enough, the man had left enough food to feed them both and at 2.30 he returned home, giving enough time for Whisky to sneak out of the house undetected.
.....................
Every day without fail, he'd visit her in the same way and both would chat for hours. One day when it was really hot, Whisky and Aria fell asleep without realising the time. The next thing they knew the man stood over them, wondering how this other cat had got in. The man picked up Whisky and carried him out of the house and across the road to his own house. At the door, his mummy answered. The moment the man and his mummy's eyes met, something strange happened.
From that day forward, the two cats noticed that her daddy and his mummy would spend a lot of time together, which meant the cats had more time to play. Within a year, the man had moved from his house and across the street into Whisky's mummy's house. A short time after this, Whisky and Aria became parents to nine beautiful kittens.
The End.

06/22/2022Thank you so much for this, I didn't even realise until now. This morning my tablet that I write all my stories on, died. And my Internet connection for the last few days has been dreadful. But I appreciate this very much.
