“This is probably fake. This has to be a prop. Probably a prank. Midnight would definitely pull a prank like this. It feels so real.” I said.
My heart stopped to the point that I thought a heart attack was around the corner once I noticed the diamond designs on the wings. At that moment, I questioned my sanity.
Am I in a nightmare that I can’t wake up from? Am I in a coma? Is this a hallucination? Dysnomia, you seriously need to visit a professional for your mental health, I thought.
“There is no way that Mother Fée committed such a vile and gruesome act. This is absolutely barbaric.” I said as tears that were a combination of fear and depression touched my cheek. I slowly backed out of the closet and shut the door closed behind me. I curled up in a ball in the corner of Mother Fée’s office with a look on my face that conveyed no emotion. I barely moved to the point I didn’t even blink.
After an hour of lying on the floor traumatized, I noticed the cloudy code booklet hidden beneath Mother Fée’s desk. That book was the only thing that was able to break a piece of me away from the traumatization that I was trapped in. I felt no different from the mutilated body in the treasure box. I was locked in my traumatized state with no key to get out. The only potential key that I have is the cloudy code book. I read one page. After a few hours, it became over two hundred pages.
Somehow, the code that is the basis of the only perfect world gave me a piece of the peaceful mind that I previously had.
“Mother Fée was the only being to write a perfect code. She’s never done such a deed. I’ve never seen her do it. None of the others saw her do it. There has to be some kind of misunderstanding. If she wanted my wings, she could have easily severed them. For over a month, I lived life as usual and she stuck to her word.
“Hello, my wonderful daughter,” said the voice that I’ll forever worship.
“Yes, Mother Fée,” I said as I stood up.
“Are you okay? You seem down.” She asked.
“I am okay,” I said.
“Remember, you can talk to me about any problems that you are having?” she said.
“I know. See you later,” I said as I hurried into the hallway.
“We found Sad Fée’s cloudy globe! Cloudy power!” she said.
“That’s great. I think I’m going to take the rest of the day off. I need a break.” I said.
“Really? Okay, Dysnomia. If you really need a break, I’ll let you have off for your excellent work.” said Cleanly Fée.
“Thank you,” I said before heading to my room.
I knew that there must have been some kind of misunderstanding. I spent the rest of the day reading my cloudy code book. Despite feeling reassured that Mother Fée wouldn’t commit such an unspeakable act, I still had an urge to talk to the male cloudy fée that I saw. I strolled around the hallway hoping to see him, but of course, while I wanted to talk to him, he was nowhere to be found. I went back to the cloudy code book until the darkness drowned out the clear blue sky. I took another stroll, and to my luck, I saw him waving at me.
“So you came running back to me, huh?” he said.
“I just have a few questions,” I said.
“I’ll teach you everything that you need to know. Because if you believe that this world is perfect, then you are delusional.” he said.
“If she were to do such an act, she could have done it to me already. Why hasn’t she done anything yet?” I asked.
“That is a good question. I wish we could ask the last defect she mutilated?”
“There has to be a misunderstanding. There is no way that Mother Fée would do something like that.” I responded.
“Do you have any evidence for your claim, detective?” he asked. “Because so far, all evidence points to her being a murder. Have you ever thought about leaving this world?” he asked.
“Such a thought never crossed my mind and it never will. I can’t be separated from Mother Fée. Her track record proves who she is. What track record do you have? All I see you do is hang in the hallway every night, trying to get my attention.” I said.
“Hey, it worked. Did it not? You are talking to me right now even though you said you wouldn’t.” he said.
“Well, yeah. Of course I am. If you claim that my mother is a murder then it is safe to assume that I’ll respond.” I said.
“Okay, Miss Brainwashed. If you think you’re so smart, and your claim is correct, then bring me some evidence. I have my evidence. It lies right in that treasure box you looked in. Here is the real question. Where is your evidence?” he asked.
“Give me some time and I promise I can prove to you that Mother Fée isn’t a murder,” I said.
“Okay, come back to this spot anytime at night when you get the evidence,” he said as he smirked at me.
“I’ll do it with ease,” I said.
The next morning, I truly became the perfume protecting Mother Fée from the stench of her enemies. I couldn’t wrap my mind around how someone could do something as foul as trying to ruin someone’s reputation with the weapon of lies. No matter what happens, cloudy power will always prevail in the end. I didn’t have an ounce of fear or doubt. The first room that I stopped at was Midnight’s office.
“Hey, Midnight,” I said.
“Hey, what’s with the notebook and pencil?” she asked.
“I just want to know if you ever seen or heard Mother Fée do anything sinister, harmful, or anything against the cloudy code?” I asked.
“Of course not. Why are you even asking that?” she asked.
“Because there is someone that is losing hope in the divinity of Mother Fée. I am gathering all the evidence that I can to prove to them that Mother Fée is not an actor, but the living version of the great cloudy code book. Now I need you to write down your response on this sheet of paper.” I said.
“Sure, but who is losing faith in Mother Fée?” she asked.
“I don’t want to embarrass the cloudy fée that told me that. That is confidential information, but your response is greatly appreciated.” I said.
I worked as usual, but during my breaks, I walked to the nearest cloudy fée and asked them the question. I read the cloudy code book and I was gifted with finding the rule that shatters his argument. Cloudy rule number 167 states, No cloudy fée shall harm, injure, or murder another cloudy fée. I organized all the evidence that I gathered on a sheet of paper. Such paper was my sword of truth to slay the dragon that breathes lies.
After a week of research, I was a top scientist ready to disprove a ridiculous theory. I was a world famous debater. I was one that everyone feared to challenge on information. The night that I met up with the trouble maker I walked with my head up high and the best posture like a supermodel. I knew I was a supermodel. I was the model of the perfect cloudy fée that followed the cloudy code rules one hundred percent and protected Mother Fée to the fullest extent.
Defect or not, it didn’t matter. It was at that moment that I finally understood the wise words of Mother Fée. Being a defect never has and never will make me who I am. I am me because of my actions. I am me because of my values.
“Hello, troublemaker,” I said.
“Hey, let’s see what evidence you concocted,” he said.
“Well, I asked a ton of cloudy fées if they ever saw or heard Mother Fée do anything that was harmful or violent to any cloudy fée. All of them said no. In fact, I have proof. Look at this sheet. I made sure that they wrote down all of their responses. Look, the handwriting is different for every response, so don’t say I wrote down those responses.” I said.
“Yeah, but their responses don’t matter,” he said.
“Why? Is it just because it goes against what you say?” I asked with a smirk.
“No, it is because all cloudy fées are brainwashed. Of course they would say that. You are brainwashed too. I understand. I used to be one of the brainwashed victims. Now I am free. Don’t worry, I am here to bring you into the light.” He said.
“Just because we follow a strict code of morals we are brainwashed? Your defense is so weak.” I said.
“Look, cloudy rule number 167 states that no cloudy fée shall harm, injure, or murder another cloudy fée. The very claim that you make about Mother Fée violates that rule.” I said.
“Who’s to say that Mother Fée can’t violate her own rules? Isn’t she the queen, the all powerful, the all knowing, the kingpin of this so-called perfect world? Who or what can stop her from violating her own rules?” he asked.
“You are very crafty, but why would she go against the basis of what allowed her to build the only perfect civilization in existence? Why would she create a rule just to break it?” I asked.
“What do you mean? That’s what rules were made for.” he said.
“Yeah, maybe for people like you?” I said.
“I see you’re getting a little feisty there. I can’t make you believe anything. I can’t make you do anything. The only thing I can do is provide you with information to help you make the best choices. The choice that you decide to make is up to you. My work here is done.” he said before he began walking away.
As he walked down the hallway, I was about to head back to my room, but I had the urge to ask him something. I felt like a stalker as I watched him walk. I knew I had to ask this question or else insomnia would haunt me tonight.
“Hello, I have a question!” I said, before he stopped walking.
“What do you want?” he said as he looked back at me with a smirk.
“Is it true that you are a cloudy fée? You said you used to be one of us. I have never seen a male cloudy fée before.” I said.
“Yes, there is a whole world full of male cloudy fées. That is just one of many lies that Mother Fée told you.” he said.
“Well, technically, she didn’t lie. She just never told us. She probably didn’t feel a need to mention it.” I said.
“Whatever floats your boat,” he said.
“What happened to your wings?” I asked.
“I lost them,” he said.
“How? Are you a defect too?” I asked.
“No, I lost them because of my own decisions. Decisions that I don’t regret.” I said. “You’re a very different cloudy fée. I never seen a cloudy fée act like you before. You’re not all smiley and happy and you talk down on Mother Fée.” I said.
“I know a lot of things. I was kicked out of your little perfect world. You gain knowledge when you go through the good. You gain wisdom when you go through the bad. Do you want me to give you some real information?” he asked.
“I guess so. Why not?” I said.
“Okay, meet me at this time in a week,” he said before he disappeared into the darkness of the hallway.
As I worked the following day, I thought about the fact that male cloudy fées exist. I wouldn’t dare bring up the topic to Mother Fée, because if she wants to talk to me about it, then she would come to me. There is no need to rock a boat that is smooth sailing, but I have to admit it is interesting to think about.
Why did he decide to leave from the perfect world that Mother Fée created for him? What is his name? I can’t believe that I talked to him for so long and I didn’t get his name? Is the male cloudy fée side of the world the same as ours? How does Mother Fée manage both worlds without one knowing about the other? If he doesn’t stay in this world anymore, where does he stay? What is it like over there?
During my break, I jotted down a list of questions that I had for him. I knew that he probably wouldn’t want to be interviewed, but I was quite parched and needed his answers to flow into my hand like refreshing and pure water. As I watched my protégé, I couldn’t help but to see the painting of his life at a different angle. The perspective of such a painting is one that I never seen before and most of the cloudy fées never have either.
“What is it like living in the human world?” I asked myself.
Obviously, it is far from the perfection that our world successfully captured, but some humans seem to live pretty happy and successful lives like my Bryce, for example. Though I would never deviate from Mother Fée, I can’t lie and say that spending a day in the human world wouldn’t be interesting. I wonder if any of the other cloudy fées secretly thought of this question?
The next day, my list of questions grew during my breaks. As I was writing a couple of my questions, Cleanly Fée walked into my office. She looked at me with an enormous smile. I spun around in my office chair to face her and returned the smile.
“I just wanted to let you know that all the showers aren’t working right now. Luckily, Mechanical Fée managed to fix one shower. She fixed the one all the way at the right end of the shower room. So, you can use that one tonight. The water should be nice and warm.” she said.
“Okay, thank you,” I said as I quickly hid my paper of questions under my desk.
“You’re welcome. I hope the rest of your day goes terrific.” She said.
“You too,” I said.
That night, a nice warm shower was good therapy for easing my mind and treating my insomnia. When I opened the shower curtain, I was speechless when I saw Mechanical Fée standing there fully clothed. Cleanly Fée and Mail Fée came out of the closet and stood behind me.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
Within a second, a bag was covering my head. I screamed and tried to squirm away. I felt my heartbeat pick up the paste like an olympian.
“You’re not getting out of my grip,” said Mechanical Fée as she tightened the bag around my neck.
I felt the others pick me up and carry me like a log. I desperately flapped my wings, but their grip was too tight. I pulled my arms and legs against their grip.
“Just give it up, Dysnomia. There are three of us and one of you.” said Cleanly Fée as they tied my legs together with thick coarse rope.
The middle portion of my wings were tied so tight that I couldn’t move them. I felt the force of them throw me on the floor. All I saw was darkness as the bag ripped off my head and duck tape was placed on my lips. I internally screamed as I squirmed on the floor. One of them turned on a flashlight and placed it on a desk while pointing it at me.
I saw all three of them wearing black cloaks with hoodies over their heads as they stared at me. Cleanly Fée kicked me as I squirmed. Mail Fée followed in her footsteps and did the same thing.
“Stop squirming, you defect,” said Cleanly Fée.
As Cleanly Fée looked into my eyes, I didn’t see an ounce of remorse nor did I see happiness. She looked as if she were a soldier going to war. She had nothing personally against enemy soldiers, but she is doing what she has to do. My tears and cries for help meant nothing to them, for the rope remained around my body and the tape remained over my lips.
“Are you sure we should be doing this to our sister? Mother Fée wouldn’t approve of this,” said Mechanical Fée.
“You wouldn’t understand. Now that I am promoted to second in command, it is my duty to make sure that the only perfect world in existence remains perfect. I was exposed to information that you weren’t because of my position. Dysnomia is a defect. The proof is on her wings.” said Cleanly Fée.
“Did Mother Fée tell you this information herself?” asked Mechanical Fée.
“No, but while I was cleaning the floor in front of Mother Fées’ office, I heard their little conversation.” She explained.
“This has to be against cloudy code,” said Mechanical Fée.
“Actually, it isn’t.” said Cleanly Fée before she used a key to open a treasure box. “While Mother Fée was away, I was cleaning her office and looking for more information on defects at the same time. I came across this treasure box and found the key later. Inside this treasure box lies the defect doctrine.” She said as she took the pamphlet out of the box.
“Apparently, defects operate under a different set of rules. This pamphlet describes in detail exactly how to dispose of a defect.” Cleanly Fée explained. “It might seem vile and barbaric, but I am in love with this doctrine because these are the rituals to remove imperfections from our perfect society. I am aware that Mother Fée hid this doctrine from us by keeping it locked in this treasure box, but I feel that as second in command, I have the right to know.”
“What does the doctrine say that we do first?” asked Mail Fée.
“Step one is to draw a 10 by 10 foot rhombus around the defect using chalk that was once in the palm of Mother Fée. I have a piece of Mother Fée’s chalk right here,” said Cleanly Fée as she tossed it to Mechanical Fée.
“What are you waiting for? Do it! Listen to your commander!” said Cleanly Fée.
“Yes, Cleanly Fée,” said Mechanical Fée as she slowly drew the rhombus.
They all looked at me as I laid on the floor at the center of the rhombus. I felt the pain from the force of a few kicks from Mail and Cleanly Fée. Mechanical Fée stood in the background.
“I know this seems brutal, and Dysnomia is a very good cloudy fée. In fact, she is one of the best, but this is a sacrifice that we have to make. Do you know how much Mother Fée had to sacrifice to build the only perfect world in existence? As second in command, it is my duty to help her make sure that this world remains perfect. Cloudy power!” said Cleanly Fée.
“Cloudy power!” said Mail Fée.
“But she didn’t do anything wrong,” said Mechanical Fée.
“What do you mean? Not too long ago, she was going around asking every cloudy fée if they ever saw or heard Mother Fée do anything sinister or harmful against her cloudy fées. Why would you even think of a question like that? Are you trying to cause division between the cloudy fées? Are you hoping that some of them say yes so you can turn all the cloudy fées against Mother Fée? I don’t see the purpose of even asking such a question. The defect is very tricky and slick, but she won’t outsmart me. I caught her sneaky trick of causing problems.” said Cleanly Fée.
“So, what do we do next?” asked Mail Fée.
“The next step is to remove her wings with the sharpest knife available.” said Cleanly Fée as she pulled a knife out of her back pocket. “Hold her down and hold her tight!”
Mail Fée held me down, keeping me squirming to a minimum.
“You too, Mechanical Fée,” said Cleanly Fée.
“Yes, boss,” said Mechanical Fée as she assisted Mail Fée in my torture.
“Her wings were always so pretty and bright. They’ll make a nice addition to the decorations on my wall.” She said.
The closer that she brought the knife, the closer I was to fainting. The fear that devoured me on the inside was too much to bear. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t scream. I couldn’t wake up from this nightmare. I was at the mercy of fate, which didn’t seem to have its best interest in me. The split second after I felt the touch of cold metal upon my wing, we heard an explosion.
“What was that?” asked Cleanly Fée as she stood up.
“I don’t know,” Mail Fée responded.
All three of them looked around in a state of confusion while I was weeping with tears of thankfulness at the hands of fate’s kindness. Cleanly Fée picked up the flashlight and pointed it around at different spots in the room. The light shone on a familiar soul.
“Who are you?” asked Cleanly Fée. “You look like a male cloudy fée without wings. You must be a defect, too. Who are you? What are you?” asked Cleanly Fée.
“I am your worst nightmare. A free mind.” he said, firing something from a small device.
All three of them screamed before running to the door. Cleanly Fée swiftly opened the door, and all three of them ran into the hallway. He laughed as they almost tripped. He untied the rope that kept me trapped, and ripped the tape off my lips.
“What is that device? Please don’t kill me!” I screamed.
“It is called a gun. It is a device from the human world. Plus, I saved your life, so why would I kill you? I’m looking forward to the day when cloudy fées use their brains.” he said as he held his stuck hand out to help me up.
“Do you want to come with me or are you still in denial?” he asked as I grabbed his hand.
At that moment, his question went in one ear and out the other because my mind was frozen like an old computer. I was struggling to process the terrifying event that I just experienced. He snapped his fingers a few times, breaking me out of the trance that consumed my mind.
“Won’t you listen to what I’m saying,” he said.
“I just want to be alone right now,” I said as I stared off into space. I slipped back into a trance before he grabbed my arm and pulled me forward.
“Let me know where your office is. I’ll walk you there.” he said.
Once I arrived, I felt the comfort of my own room. A place where I felt no one could hurt me. A place where it is just me and my thoughts. A place that I could call home.
“Do you want to come to the other world with me or stay with Mother Fée and your so-called sisters?” he asked.
“Mother Fée would never allow such a horrid thing to take place with anyone. I’m pretty sure that Mother Fée doesn’t know that they did that.” I said.
“Still defending Mother Fée! What is it going to take for you to see the truth? Do you have to get murdered for you to finally understand?” he said.
“I’ll tell Mother Fée exactly what they did. She will definitely punish them.” I said.
“Well, you got two weeks to decide if you want to come with me or stay and have fun with your sisters? The choice is up to you.” he said.
“Thank you for saving my wings, but running away is unnecessary,” I said.
“Okay, whatever you want,” he said before he turned around and walked away.
“My name is Extreme Fée, but I don’t go by that anymore. It isn’t me. Just call me Husky.” he said.
“Okay, have a good night, Husky,” I said.
Once I was in the room with my door closed, I curled up in a ball and laid in the room’s corner. I knew it was time for me to go to sleep, but sleeping became the biggest chore. I couldn’t even get myself to turn off the light. I laid there pondering the pathway that I am going to walk. The thought of telling on another cloudy fée made me feel sick.
Why would I get my sister in trouble? We are cloudy fées. We work together? If one of us needs help, it becomes a problem that we all have to work together to solve. If one of us gets an award, we don’t get envious we celebrate it with them as if we won it ourselves. After work, all we do is have fun with each other and party. This is a perfect world crafted by the wisdom of the glorious Mother Fée.
The next day I dragged myself to work because my fatigue held me back like a couple of thousand pound weights were tied to my legs. For the first time, focusing on my protégé became a struggle. The images of the terrifying event haunted my mind as if I were trapped in a haunted house. Even though I made it out of the situation safely without a scratch, I still felt like I was still tied up in the rope with tape over my mouth.
During my break, as a group of cloudy fées talked and laughed, I couldn’t get myself to step over and join the conversation. Horrifying questions tied me to my chair and covered my mouth with tape. I sat in my office chair as quiet as the paper that sat on my desk.
What if Sad Fée told them to stand there and talk to attract my attention? Then, as soon as I go over there, they attack me and take my wings. What if the sounds of the footsteps passing by my door are the last sounds I hear before my wings are mounted on the wall? Worst of all, what if Mother Fée was the mastermind behind the attack? What if she was the one that gave Cleanly Fée the order?
Eventually, I locked my office door and attempted to focus on Bryce, but my questions tied the surrounding rope tighter. Near the end of the day, the knock on the door caused me to have a panic attack for a few seconds. I looked through the peephole and saw Midnight. I always loved talking to my best friend, but the love of my pretty wings kept me from opening the door.
“Hopefully, I didn’t break her heart, and she thinks I am ignoring her,” I whispered to myself.
I hoped that over time, things would return to normal. However, I was greeted by no one other than disappointment. My days consisted of avoiding every cloudy fée in sight, sleepless nights, and anxiety attacks. One day was Sad Fée’s birthday and for the first time, I didn’t show up to a fellow cloudy fée’s birthday party. I know all of them noticed I wasn’t there. I just hope that I didn’t put a damper on her birthday party.
Once two weeks passed, I was essentially a ghost. There were only two places that I stayed at which were my office or my room with the door closed and locked. The isolation, anxiety, and restlessness began to play with my head. My anxiety attacks became more frequent and my head became home to headaches. That night, I took a stroll around the hallway to get some fresh air.
It wasn’t easy, but I knew I had to do it, otherwise I would eventually lose my sanity. There is no punishment worse than being locked in a room and isolated from the world for all eternity. Even though I only took a small step, I knew every journey begins with one. Such a step was truly the beginning of my journey to get my life back together. As I roamed the dark hallways, I heard someone’s voice. Once the voice grew louder, I hid in an open locker and shut it closed.
“Mechanical Fée, you know we have to do this. Don’t play dumb with me.” said Cleanly Fée.
“I know you are right. Mother Fée wrote the instruction for the ritual. I can’t deny that.” said Mechanical Fée.
“That defect hasn’t been easy to catch. She used to be the most social one around. Always going to parties, helping those who need it, and joining conversations. Now she is nowhere to be found. But don’t worry, she can’t hide forever. We’ll eventually get her.” said Cleanly Fée.
“Yeah, hopefully we get her soon,” said Mechanical Fée.
“Mechanical Fée, I have a top secret mission for you. No one else can know about this, so don’t tell anyone. It might seem harsh, but you have to do it for the sake of our perfect world.” said Cleanly Fée.
“What is it?” asked Mechanical Fée.
“I need you to design a contraption that is a cloudy fée trap. Make sure the device is easy to hide. Make sure it can trap her and remove her wings nice and easy.” said Cleany Fée.
“I’ll do it. I’ll do it for my sisters and the great Mother Fée.” said Mechanical Fée after a pause that lasted a few seconds.
“Yes, you are a true cloudy fée always putting others before your own feelings. You are a living example of cloudy power!” said Cleanly Fée as such a conversation almost made me faint.
I am forever trapped in a nightmare. I am in a room with no door and the walls are closing in on me. There is nowhere for me to run or hide from my bleak future. There is only one thing that I could do to save myself from the destructive path that I am walking on. The thought of telling on my fellow cloudy fée makes me feel terrible, but sometimes you have to put your feelings aside to make the right choice.
After I spent 10 minutes in the locker contemplating my decision, I stepped into the darkness of the hall. I didn’t know where my journey would end, but I had to have the courage to walk through the darkness. I didn’t know what my next step would bring. However, anything other than the conditions I was living in looked like a surprise party. As I approached the door of Mother Fée’s office, I heard a conversation going on.
“You are doing a terrific job as my assistant Cleanly Fée!” said Mother Fée. “I always knew that you had it in you. Your dedication and hard work are unmatched. I grant you the leadership achievement award!” said Mother Fée.
“Wow! I can’t wait to tell everyone about this tomorrow! They’ll probably throw me a huge party and we’ll celebrate!” said Cleanly Fée.
“You worked hard. You earned it.” said Mother Fée.
At that moment I knew that the window of opportunity to get my life back together shut closed. The next thing that I knew, I was lying on top of my bed as tears rolled down my cheeks. I stared into space to the point that if someone saw me, they would have to ask me if I was alive. My answer would truly be that the day that I discovered I was a defect was the day that I died. My social life, safety, and job are no longer in the grasp of my hands.
I have no future. I have nothing to look forward to. I have no one to give me advice. I can’t even depend on Mother Fée anymore. I don’t have anywhere to go. I don’t know what to do. All I can do is ponder on topics surrounding my demise. Perhaps there is only one thing that I can do to escape this harsh reality.
The thought brought me great fear. I never imagine myself making such a drastic decision. I stood in front of the mirror and got a glimpse of the diamond designs on my wings. No longer was the hand of Mother Fée around to wipe my tears. As soon as I wiped the tears off my cheeks, I made my decision.

After pouring my feelings onto a sheet of paper, I slipped it into an envelope and left it on top of my bed. The sight of my final envelope to Mother Fée felt surreal. I shed one final tear for her before stepping into the darkness of the hallway. In the distance, I saw Husky walking away. I swiftly ran down the hallway without looking back once.
“Husky! Husky! Husky! I made my decision. I don’t want to be in this perfect world anymore. I want to come with you to the other world!” I said.
He slightly turned his head back towards me and gave me a smirk.
