Goodnight
Born 2009, M, from Michigan, United StatesA little boy sat in his room in the orphanage, watching clouds move across the night sky in an endless cycle- big cloud, small cloud, big cloud, and so on.
Every night the boy would light a candle and make wish before blowing it out, and every night he would wish for a family to come find him.
And he did it again this night, lightning the candle with a match from his little box, and he wished for someone to adopt him. And, with tears falling from his eyes as always, he blew out the candle.
Then, he heard the sound of tires screeching on the pavement leading up to the orphanage.
The boy scrambled over to the window and saw a black BMW pulled up. A woman who took care of all the orphans walked over to the car and talked to whoever was inside from the front window. She completely blocked him as she stood in front of the front window, not allowing the boy to see who was inside.
As she walked away, the boy thought he saw a mangled face as the front vent window rolled up, but the boy dismissed it as his overreactive imagination.
And then, the woman who was talking to the man came to his room and said,
“Pack your things. You’re being adopted!”
Excitement surged through the boy. Oh, how he longed to have a family! He only knew his mother for the first five days of his life, before she took him here to rot. He couldn’t remember what she was like, but he didn’t want to, because he was ready to make NEW memories with this person.
The boy rushed outside and hopped inside the car and buckled himself into the passenger seat. A man’s voice spoke from the driver’s seat.
“Ready to have some fun?”
The boy smiled.
The man turned around and looked over the edge of the seat so the boy could see him. The smile on the boy’s face vanished once he realized what he was looking at.
The face of the man was mangled, and horns bursted out of his forehead and twisted in many directions. Tusks were growing from the corners of his lips, which were split and bleeding in many areas.
The thing stepped out of the driver’s seat and over to the boy, contorting his body to fit in the small car cabin.
The boy saw he had no clothes on, and his body was nothing but a mass of red meat. His legs were wide and bulky, the arms were whip thin, and a mouth with jagged teeth in its stomach was ready to swallow the boy whole.
The thing grabbed the boy and shoved him inside the mouth…
And then, the boy was in a quiet bedroom.
The only thing that was there was a nightstand with a lamp giving off orange light, illuminating that corner of the room, and of course the bed that he lay on, which would be his deathbed in any moment.
The creature stood at the doorway, smiling.
The boy felt drowsy and yawned as he sank into the bed, pulling the sheets over him and resting his head against the pillows.
He closed his eyes, and he heard the creature say,
“Goodnight…”
Something wormy plunged into his chest, and he felt a warm, sticky liquid oozing over him.
The boy’s vision faded more and more, until nothing was left but darkness. The creature spoke yet again, and it was the last thing the boy heard before it was entirely over for him.
“Goodnight…”
