Thereâs a clearing in the forest where they say the fairies play
Thatâs where we found the corpse of Elsa May
We wandered into the clearing, Jack, Jim and me
To find her body just a-hanging from the tree
âitâs suicide, sheâs gone and topped herselfâ said Jack
Jim said âit canât be, her hands tied behind her backâ
He said âitâs murder, itâs the police we should ringâ
I wondered âmaybe sheâs been done in by the fairy kingâ
Jack looked at her swinging and said âitâs just like Lucy Bair
The found her in her front room dead upon a chairâ
I looked at him and wondered, âare you off your head?
Elsa May is hanging.â; Jack says, âyes but both of them are dead,
Lucy Bair was stabbed there was blood everywhere
They even found it on the ceiling dripping on their hairâ
Then Jim made a call and said âthe coppers on his way
They said keep from the clearing and everyone awayâ
So we left Elsa May hanging while we waited in the wood
And Jack returned to Lucy Bair and the dripping blood
Jim stood there open mouthed while Jack described the scene
Even though as it turned out he had never been
Jim asked âjust a mo, when did Lucy die,
Because ââtwas only yesterday she served me with a pieâ
Jack looked confused, ânah, that cannot be right
Sure and didnât they bury her just the other nightâ
Jim said, âhold on she was a lovely lass
Iâd not mistake the pretty face, shes a bit of classâ
Well Jack got angry and turned away âIâm telling you itâs true
Iâm-sure the cops will back me up when they talk to youâ
He walked into the clearing and gave a sudden shout
âLads he called, come look at this, this you gotta doubtâ
Elsa May was not there a-hanging on the tree
No rope, no Elsa May there was nothing there to see
We never saw Elsa May again, there was never any fuss
Some said sheâd gone to Stoke on the daily bus
Others told a story that sheâd met a man and offed with him
Someone even joked that sheâd had an affair with Jim
No one had liked her much, and for a girl so very young
She had a shrewish nature and a vicious tongue
Sometimes I go to that clearing, where I saw her swing
And wonder in a vague way about that fairie king
Just so you know, to make this tale complete
I called into the cafe to get something to eat
I was served by this girl, young and fair of face
Who carried herself with a natural sweet grace
I am pretty sure had a name badge that read Lucy Bair
So Iâm not certain if anyone died sitting in a chair
But sitting there alone, I certainly canât deny
She sure served up a tasty apple pie
