Elsa May
Born 1959, M, from Stoke, United KingdomThere’s a clearing in the forest where they say the fairies play
That’s where we found the corpse of Elsa May
We wandered into the clearing, Jack, Jim and me
To find her body just a-hanging from the tree
‘it’s suicide, she’s gone and topped herself’ said Jack
Jim said ‘it can’t be, her hands tied behind her back’
He said ‘it’s murder, it’s the police we should ring’
I wondered ‘maybe she’s been done in by the fairy king’
Jack looked at her swinging and said ‘it’s just like Lucy Bair
The found her in her front room dead upon a chair’
I looked at him and wondered, “are you off your head?
Elsa May is hanging.”; Jack says, ‘yes but both of them are dead,
Lucy Bair was stabbed there was blood everywhere
They even found it on the ceiling dripping on their hair’
Then Jim made a call and said ‘the coppers on his way
They said keep from the clearing and everyone away’
So we left Elsa May hanging while we waited in the wood
And Jack returned to Lucy Bair and the dripping blood
Jim stood there open mouthed while Jack described the scene
Even though as it turned out he had never been
Jim asked ‘just a mo, when did Lucy die,
Because ‘‘twas only yesterday she served me with a pie’
Jack looked confused, ‘nah, that cannot be right
Sure and didn’t they bury her just the other night’
Jim said, ‘hold on she was a lovely lass
I’d not mistake the pretty face, shes a bit of class’
Well Jack got angry and turned away ‘I’m telling you it’s true
I’m-sure the cops will back me up when they talk to you’
He walked into the clearing and gave a sudden shout
‘Lads he called, come look at this, this you gotta doubt’
Elsa May was not there a-hanging on the tree
No rope, no Elsa May there was nothing there to see
We never saw Elsa May again, there was never any fuss
Some said she’d gone to Stoke on the daily bus
Others told a story that she’d met a man and offed with him
Someone even joked that she’d had an affair with Jim
No one had liked her much, and for a girl so very young
She had a shrewish nature and a vicious tongue
Sometimes I go to that clearing, where I saw her swing
And wonder in a vague way about that fairie king
Just so you know, to make this tale complete
I called into the cafe to get something to eat
I was served by this girl, young and fair of face
Who carried herself with a natural sweet grace
I am pretty sure had a name badge that read Lucy Bair
So I’m not certain if anyone died sitting in a chair
But sitting there alone, I certainly can’t deny
She sure served up a tasty apple pie
