Days when Alfie was young
Born 1959, M, from Stoke, United KingdomRehomed at nine months, it’s true
A sad start that any dog got
All he wanted to do is chew
He wasn’t particular what!
Walls and doors took a beating
Cushions pillows and seating
By the time he grew out of this
We’d replaced most of the premises
He’d certainly had lots of fun
In the days when Alfie was young
At fun dog shows he was a champ
Strutting his stuff as he’d go
With a bone or a toy he’d decamp
Chased by all in the show
He’d collect rosettes every timel
Best in show often too
A winner all through his prime
The best a dog could do
A hero who’s exploits are unsung
In the days when Alfie was young
At twelve years old he was full of affection
That day we noticed a swelling
We thought maybe an infection
Without an expert there was no telling
So we took him to see the vet
The result shocked us to the core
I have never been this upset
By what we had in store
He has had his time in the sun
In the days when Alfie was young
We strive to make his last days
Happy and free of pain
And waiting for signs of malaise
But knowing it’s in vain
Just praying, hoping to God he
Has a few days left of fun
As the cancer rages through his body
Until its course is run
So we keep him comfortable but, we are undone
Pretending it’s the days when Alfie was young
gone.
Nothing left but our memories
Of times sadly missed
Lost in our own reveries
A Loneliness that persists
From a well of grief tears have sprung
And I remember, how I remember, those days when Alfie was young
