Shelly sighed and looked at her husband. His eyes were locked onto the magician’s show. She wasn’t a fan of magic shows, because she didn’t find them entertaining, but her husband loved them. She’d booked the tickets for his birthday. It was too bad she couldn’t just send him and let him watch the show alone. That was uncharitable, though. She could stand one night of this for his birthday. At least he was enjoying it thoroughly.
After what seemed to her too long, the magician announced that for his final trick, he needed a volunteer. Her husband’s hand shot up, as she knew it would. Many other hands were raised as well. Shelly suppressed the urge to roll her eyes, and instead toyed with her green scarf. The green scarf was what she and the magician had agreed upon several days earlier. She’d paid him dearly, but she was certain it’d be worth it.
The magician scanned the audience a few times before his gaze fell on her and her husband. He smiled. “You, sir! Come join me on the stage!”
Her husband stood and strode purposefully down the aisle and up the stairs to the stage, where he shook the magician’s hand.
“Are you ready for adventure?”
“Sure!” said her husband, grinning at the audience.
“Are you prepared for anything? Are you ready to change out of those jeans and polo and wear a suit?”
“Umm…maybe,” he said with a good-natured smile.
“Are you ready to step inside this box and be at my mercy?” It sounded ominous, but the audience laughed, and her husband laughed along.
“Yeah, why not?”
The magician opened the door to the standing box, and her husband stepped inside. Then the magician locked the box and covered it with a red sheet.
“Please say your favorite magic words while I spin the box!” he exclaimed to the audience.
Everyone shouted out various phrases.
Then there was a hush as the magician theatrically stopped spinning. He slowly pulled off the sheet. He unlocked the box. Then he paused. The audience watched, each thinking that he or she knew what was going to happen next. He unlocked the box to reveal a very confused chicken that stepped out of the box. Everyone clapped.
“I’m sorry, ma’am!” shouted the magician as he looked toward Shelly. He placed the chicken back into the box. He did everything over again, but this time when he opened the box, the man that stepped out was wearing a perfectly tailored suit and he was holding a rose. He looked down and pretended to be surprised.
The audience applauded loudly. Everyone watched as he made his way to the seat where Shelly was sitting. He gave her the rose and sat beside her.
“An improvement, ma’am?” shouted the magician over the applause.
She nodded. Yes, it was an improvement. He looked fabulous.
After the show, she said, "Want to go eat somewhere?”
“How about a steak dinner?”
“Perfect,” she said with a contented sigh. Everything would be perfect now. She wouldn’t have to listen to her husband talk about magic shows anymore. Her husband hadn’t just been improved. He’d been, as promised, replaced.
