It is what it was...
Born 2005, M, from Muscat, Oman“Do you miss our relationship?” She asked.
He looked her in the eyes, reliving the past to decide his answer. And with a smile, he answered: “Yeah,”
She smiled back at him and took a sip of her beer. He looked at his watch and noticed the clock struck midnight. He tipped the bartender and offered to pay for their drinks. Elza grabbed her jacket from the hanger near the door. Charlie held the door for her. They both walked out of the bar and into the busy glimmering roads of light. Charlie hugged her and bid adieu. Elza stood there waiting for a cab. As Charlie walked away, he looked back at her once more. Something in him didn’t want to leave her just yet. It wasn’t a coincidence they met at the bar. This could finally be his chance to move on.
He stopped in his tracks and walked back to Elza. Her attempt to signal a cab failed. He went up to her and asked: “Do you wanna walk perhaps?”
To which Elza replied with a smirk: “That’ll be cool,”
They both walked the streets, talking about what they did since their breakup. Elza is now an attorney at Faber, Donald, & Clarkson. Charlie is in the film business serving as a creative head for multiple projects. They reminisced about their college lives as the cool breeze brushed past them.
Charlie was a sophomore when he first met Elza. She bumped into him by accident and knocked off a model he had in his hands. She felt bad about it and apologized. But Charlie couldn’t care less as he settled his eyes on the beauty in front of him. She had curly hair and brown eyes. She wore a cute top that day. They both bent down to pick up the pieces—her smile as she got up to give what she collected etched onto his mind.
“I’m Charlie,”
“Oh… I’m Elza,” She smiled. “I’m so sorry about this. Maybe I could help you out,”
“How about coffee at Pillow’s?” He offered.
“Uhh yeah,”
Their infatuation blossomed into young love. She enjoyed her time with him. He enjoyed every second he spent with her. The sweet kisses she gave him made him blush every time. His heartfelt hugs made her feel safe.
One day their love reached its breaking point. It could’ve survived, but neither of them knew it would never be the same again and after a couple of weeks, they called it off. They’ve both taken their time to move on. But either of them never truly did. And now after years, fate intertwined and they meet yet again. As they kept walking, Elza’s hand slowly reached out to his. He looked at her and held it. Charlie missed this. The long walks he had with her, where all they did was hold hands and talk about anything. It was plain simple, but it meant something to him.
Elza hinted that they were nearing her house. Charlie had something in his mind that bothered him. Something he could finally ask her.
“Where did we go wrong?” He asked.
“Maybe we weren’t meant for each other,”
“Then why? Why did we fall for each other?” He asked.
She took her time to answer: “I don’t know,”
“Did you ever think what if? What if we made it work?”
“We didn’t though… did we?”
“What if we did?”
“I would be lying if I told you that I never thought of it,” She answered.
Elza understood that Charlie didn’t fully move on. The realization gave her a minute sensation of relief because deep down even she hadn’t moved on. After Charlie, she dated a couple of guys but something about Charlie attached her to him. Charlie felt her warm hands pulsing with feeling and admired her hair as the wind brushed past it.
The two of them neared a gate. This was it. The journey was complete. Charlie felt a feeling of sadness as Elza told him that they had reached.
“We should catch up again,” She offered.
“Sure,”
Elza let go of his hand and hugged him. One last hug perhaps. One which she would later obsess over. Her hands caressed his back as her eyes closed, moving on to deep thought. His mind pictured various scenarios where he could make it work but all it did was provide him with false hope. The moon stood witness to “What could’ve been,” The stars pondered if they would ever get back together.
The hug ended. It is what it was then. The spark was out. Funny how the things we hope never work out in the way we hoped. It never fails to leave us in pain. Even after recovery, we continue to get hurt. Is humanity accustomed to torment? Do we enjoy the suffering? Or do we face them with less feeling?
As she opened her gate and walked inside, he looked over. The moonlight was her spotlight. He stood by the mailbox, waiting to take a risk.
“Elza,” He called out. She turned back.
On an impulse, he walked over to her and kissed her rosy lips. His hands rested on her cheeks. A kiss that rekindled their love. A plethora of feelings rushed between Elza’s heart and mind. The sense of ecstasy and romance took over. Of all the scenarios Mark made up in his mind, his impulsive decision was not one of them. The God of Love, Eros couldn’t stand by when a beautiful romance begins to fail. Elza’s spirit was lifted high up in the air as he kissed her. Deep down, she knew she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself if she failed to confess her feelings to him. But their kiss gave her hope. Nay… It gave her the belief that this could work again.
Her eyes got in the moment, her tender lips touching his. She pulled back and took a couple of breaths followed by an ecstatic smile. He looked at her and chuckled with happiness.
“Coffee at Pillow’s tomorrow?” He asked with a shy smile.
She nodded her head, still breathless.
