Cries in the Night
Born 1957, F, from Mesick Michigan, United StatesMany nights I sit at the edge of this dock with a beer in hand. It's been three years since that horrible evening on June twelfth. Anger fills my soul and rage burns within me as I remember it so clearly.
Tonya and I were sitting on the dock enjoying a beautiful late evening sunset and drinking a few beers when suddenly life changed forever.
āI'm out.ā She giggles as she holds up her empty bottle.
āHey baby. No problem. I'll go get us a couple more brews. Don't go anywhere.ā I brush against her breast teasingly as I slide by her and head towards the house. Grabbing a couple beers from the fridge and kicking the door closed with my foot I turn just time to hear gut wrenching cries break the silence. Bottles smash to the floor spraying the scent of ale throughout the small kitchen.
āTonya!!ā I yell as I rush to the open door. In my hast I slip on the wet floor and hit my head on the corner of the counter leaving a huge gash. Blood gushes down the side of my face. I'm lying in a pool of beer and blood. Pulling myself up off the sticky floor I hear Tonya scream again. Running out the threshold and down towards the lake I see two shadows struggling. One is Tonya the other a menacing ruthless human being.
āYou son of a bitch, leave her alone!!ā Screaming as blood blurs my vision I watch as the evil grabs my girl and tosses her in the water like a stinking rotten fish. Running, for what seems like in slow motion, I reach out for her but can't get to her soon enough. Before I can get to the creep he jumps in the lake and swims off. A heavy mist is beginning to form making it difficult to see. Squinting my eyes, I jump into the cool oasis and begin searching for Tonya. Between gasps for air and gulps of water I yell out her name āTonya, Tonya answer me. I know you're OK. Answer me please. TONYA!!!ā To no avail my attempts to find her fail. Exhausted, I crawl to the shore. Lying on my back. I whimper to myself. āShe's gone. She's gone. She can't be gone.ā āYOU BASTARD. I WILL FIND YOU! YOUR DEAD!ā I yell into the darkness.
Struggling physically and emotionally I make my way back to our cabin. I need to call Sheriff Dugan and get some guys out here searching for Tonya. Dialing the number, I wait for a response. Soon the receptionist speaks. āSheriff Dugan's office. What can I do for you?ā Silence. āHello. Is anyone there?ā Placing the phone back in its cradle, I stand staring out the window at the heavy mist moving like eerie ghosts floating in midair. Mumbling out loud I whisper āI'll track this monster down and kill him myself. This is my mission. My revenge. No one else. Bastard, you're mine. You will die at my hands.ā
I know this lake and these woods better than anyone especially this killer. He's in my territory now. The mist rolled in so fast he didn't have time to get out of these woods. He's still here but not for long. Death is knocking on his door, and he doesn't know it.
Back at the house I grab my Duffle bag and fill it with wire, a bear trap, switch blade, stun gun, flashlight, mace and of course my Glock 19. The brass knuckles, I put on for immediate defense. Not sure what I might need but I must be prepared.
Dressed for the hunt, I head out north through the woods. About two miles into the dense forest, I hear a man's voice mumbling to himself. āThis dam fog. I can't see shit. That dam bitch, if she'd only kept her mouth shout, she'd been dead before she hit the water and I'd be gone. I don't know how long I've been out here. Can't see the face of my watch. It's too foggy. I'm going to have to sit quietly and wait it out.ā
Off in the near distance I hear a faint cry. āJohn.ā
My God, it's Tonya. Heading in the direction of her cry, I will her to be quiet. To not make another sound in fear that the killer will hear her. But she doesn't sense my urgency. This time her cry is louder. āJohn! John! Help me!ā
āShit. The bitch is alive!ā The killer shrieked āKeep talking bitch. I'm coming after you. This time you'll be dead when I'm through with you!ā
The killer heads off in the direction of her cries.
āTonya, please stop yelling. I know where you are.ā I plead. āI don't want the killer to get to you before I do. Please stop.ā I whisper.
But her cries continue.
āThat's it Bitch, keep talking. You're leading me right to you. Good girl.ā Gloated the killer.
By the sound of his voice, I knew I was right on his ass. So, I grabbed my stun gun and aimed it in the direction I believed he was.
He let out a loud bleat.
Bingo!
I don't know if the jolt knocked him down.
But seconds later I knew the answer, tripping over him I fell to the ground. A fight pursued.
āYou bastard, you tried to kill my wife.ā I swung my brass knuckles into his face and made contact. I could hear bone cracking.
āYa, and I'm going to finish the job too! Your wife is evil! She needs to die!ā He yells these fabricated words as he stumbles through the heavily brushed path along the lake.
āJohn! Help me! I hurt my ankle! I can't move! Please John, hurry!ā
āTonya, I know where you are! Stop talking! The killer is still after you!ā I yell.
I head out around the killer. Wanting to get ahead of him. He'll follow the path. I know that. I can out smart him by circling around and getting in front of him.
Back on the path, I set a bear trap in hopes of slowing him down if not crippling him for good. Then I continued on my way in the direction where I last heard Tonya's voice. She's not here. āTonyaā. I whisper. āTonya.ā No response. Dam where could she have gone.
āHey bitch! Where are you!ā I hear the killer off in the distance announce his calling. I'm coming for you. You can't hide from me!ā
For a long few minutes, the only sounds are the noises from the forest itself. When suddenly without warning out of nowhere spirals the most ear-piercing cries I've ever heard. Listening closely, I recognize the screams. Tonya, it's Tonya! She screams again and again. Clenching, as I feel her pain, I absentmindedly rush to her. Her cries are worsening. I sense it's hard for her to breath. She's on the verge of death. Hang in there babe. I'm coming. Rounding a bend in the path I hear her groan painfully. Shining the flashlight on her I witness a horrific sight. My baby is covered in blood. Her throat is slashed. Blood is pulsating from the gap in her throat sliding down and tinting her once pure white sundress affixing it to her slender body. Gently but with determination I pick her up in my arms and run down the path. Don't die on me Tonya. Don't die.
āYou must be dead bitch! I don't hear your panicked screams for help. You got what was coming to you. Your dead! Dead!ā The killer screams.
Suddenly I'm thrown to the ground in excruciating pain and a foot in the bear trap. Tonya lands beside me. āFocus.ā I tell myself. Check on Tonya. Oh my God. No! She's not moving. Her body is limp. No pulse, She's dead! āTONYAAA!ā
āYOU BASTARD, YOU'RE DEAD! YOU WON'T LEAVE THESE WOODS ALIVE!!! I WILL KILL YOU!!!!ā
āI don't think that's going to happen from someone with their foot in a trap. I heard the trap snap, and you yell. So, while you struggle to free yourself, I'm going to tell you a story. And your lovely wife Tonya is the star actress. So, you listen closely.ā
āYOU SON OF A BITCH!!ā
āNow. Now. Calm yourself and listen.ā
I have no choice but to listen to the creep as I grapple with what has just happened to me.
āYou see John, two years ago on this very night your wife Tonya murdered my wife and daughter.ā
āNo, she didn't!ā
āShut up and listen. Your wife's real name is 'Constance Rebel Slyvanic'. She is a Russian Spy with orders to track down my wife and Lindsey my daughter and kill on sight. My wife and daughter defected from Russia along with 61,400,000.00 Russian Ruble. That's equal to $1,000,000 American dollars. How she got the money is of no concern of yours. Are you shocked yet?ā
āYour lying!ā
āWait, there's more. Constance (Tonya) speaks six languages with accents to match. She is highly trained in Karate, Systema, Ju-Jistsu, Tae Kwon Do and hand to hand combat. She's one of the best. She had you fooled. You see John she had to be killed. And I was the one the KGB hired to do the job. Now that the job is done, I will be on my way. I have nothing against you. Carry on with your life as it is. I will leave you in peace.
End of story.

09/29/2022A good, old story. While, to me, the mistaking for `your & you're or you areĀ“ is a spoiler, it also reflects lower education characters. The story flow is good, but after the killer's first attack it is a bit lengthy, too. Cold War stories, as the KGB is long renamed & reformed in modern Russia, made it all seem so easy. Thanks for sharing!

09/30/2022I struggle with my proofreading software as well, and my critics RIGHTFULLY still find sufficient food for their work AFTER I ran it through proofreading for hours. Best wishes, Shelly!

09/30/2022Thank you Andre for your honest remarks. I appreciate your comments. Comments like this will only make me a stronger writer. Sometimes it is difficult to catch the mistakes. I proof read this story 4 times before I submitted it. And still didn't catch my 'your, you are and you're ' errors. Thanks again.
