That Sunday started out like any other. I was sitting at the chapel watching the sermon. The door flies open, and 2 men run in. “ America was attacked!” one of the men shouted as they ran down the aisle. The gasps of people filled the air as the men made it to the altar. They spoke to the priest. The priest dismissed the service early. I stood up and picked up my bag as people started leaving the chapel. I start walking home, I pass by the recruiting station. stretched down the entire length of the street, young men wait in line for the recruiting station. I was one of them. It took me 5 hours to reach the station. I walked through the door, the recruiter was filling out paperwork. He looks up from his desk “Good evening, I’m First Sergeant Cunningham of the United States Army.” he glances at the mound of paperwork on his desk, “I assume you heard the news, and want to join the army.” he said as he looked back at me. “Yes.” I reply as I look around the office at the propaganda posters. “I want to fight on the front lines, as my dad in World War One.” He glanced back at the paperwork, then to me. He spoke with strength. “Sign here.” He handed me a pen. I signed the paper and handed it to him. He stood up, “Follow me.” he said as he walked through the door. I follow the recruiter to the back room. “Step on the scale please” he said as he pointed at the scale. I step on, “you look good” He wrote my weight on his clipboard. “Now time for pushups” he said as he grabbed his stop watch “Go.” what felt like hours of pushups was only a minute, “Time. Thirty five, not bad.” He looked at me one last time, “Raise your right hand and repeat after me. I, your name, do solemnly swear foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”

“I, Philip Jackson, do solemnly swear” I repeated “that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.” I repeated, “Welcome to the United States army, you will leave on a bus tomorrow to Camp Blanding” This was only the beginning, to a truly brutal war.
