Halloween at Dreadmore Elementary School
Born 1957, F, from Mesick Michigan, United States“Wow! Mom. What the?” Greeting Tommy and his mother at the front door of Dreadmore Elementary School stands a larger-than-life Dracula spreading his cape and spouting the word “Welcome.” As they step further into the school vestibule, they spot a Ghoul echoing the words “Happy Ghoulish Halloween.” “Happy Ghoulish Halloween.” Suddenly they're engulfed with witches and bats flying from the ceiling. Zombies and ghosts are perched at the classroom doors awaiting the children's arrival. Black scary spiders crawl up and down the walls. Blood is spattered everywhere. All fake, of course. “Who did all this mom?”
“I don't know honey. I helped decorate the library Friday after school. The other staff members must have done all this work. Head to class dear. Remember to come to my classroom after school today. You're not taking the bus home.”
“OK mom see you later.”
Tommy's eyes are mesmerized by all the decorations which abound in the hallways and classrooms he passes. Stepping into his classroom he spots his third-grade teacher Ms. Graves. “Ms. Graves this looks awesome! The whole school is decorated with ghost, goblins, witches, vampires, zombies, coffins, spiders and webs, black cats, fake blood and jack-o-lanterns. This is so cool!”
“Well thank you Tommy. Mr. Ghoulea and I have been working in the classroom all weekend getting it ready for our special Halloween party. The rest of the staff has worked diligently getting the cafeteria, library, gym and hallways decorated. This is going be a very special and unique celebration.”
“Ahh cool!” Shrieks Tommy.
“Do you remember when Mr. Homestone the principal announced that there would be celebrations this year? He stated that enough time had passed since the murders of those children and their teacher ten years ago. He said our time of mourning is over and we all need to move on.”
“Even our town is all decorated. In fact, it looks pretty eerie and some of the things look so real Ms. Graves. Like the mummy whose working at Ed's Hardware and the waitress's and cooks at Deana's Cafe'. They're dressed like vampires, witches and ghouls, I swear they're real. It's scary!”
“Yes, I know Tommy. I'm impressed with how the community has stepped up to make this the best Halloween in a very long time. And you know Tommy. It's all make-believe.”
Tommy shrugged his shoulders and walked over to his desk as he heard his classmates strutting into the classroom.
“Ms. Graves! Ms. Graves!
“What is it, Stormy?”
“Did you see the hallway? It's spooky and gory with all that fake blood and vampires? They're my favorite. And there's a mummy walking down the hall!”
“Yes, Stormy I'm aware of what's in the hallway.”
“Hey Ms. Graves!”
“Good morning, Ralph.”
“Hi Ms. Graves. You look pretty today.”
“Hi Mary. Thank you.”
“Hey! Ms. Graves, did you know our bus drivers are zombies!!”
“Yes, I know Buddy.”
“Good morning boys and girls. Come on in. Place your costumes over in the corner near the window and please take your seats.”
As the students march in and follow their teachers' commands, Mr. Ghoulea is eyeing them carefully. He's never liked this position, but the job was ordered to him. He stands in the corner awaiting his instructions.
Their teacher continues. “Today is a very special day. As you all know there hasn't been a Halloween party at this school for ten years. At the assembly last Wednesday Mr. Homestone explained why. So, this year the town and the school are going all out to give you students the best Halloween celebration ever.
The students scream out in joy. Slapping their desk. “Ya!” “Alright!” “You're the best Ms. Graves!” “Awesome!”
She gives Mr. Ghoulea a sly wink. As he returns the same, her attention is directed back to her students.
“OK class lets calm down. Our morning will go as usual with math, reading, recess and lunch, then the fun begins. I know you are all excited but let's stay focused and get down to what we need to do. Agree?”
“Agree!” Some of the students echo back while others just nod their heads in unison.
“As you return from lunch recess please get into your costumes. The food, drinks and games will be waiting for you. Mr. Ghoulea and I will also be dressed in our Halloween apparel.”
The children quickly stumble in from recess eager to dress for fun. In no time everyone is ready for the festivities to begin.
“Ms. Graves, I love your witch costume. You look pretty scary.”
“Why thank you Dianna. That was the idea. I guess I pulled it off, huh?”
“You sure did!”
“OK class it looks like everyone is in costume. Let's begin this party! Here's the plan. We will play the games first, then have a snack and wrap up with a fun food activity I brought in.”
Time flew by as the students bobbed for apples, yelled Bingo, raced to grab a chair before the music stopped and tried to figure out where to pin the nose on the Jack-o-lantern.
“Class, I need your attention. Let's finish up the games and have some doughnuts and punch.”
“Great, I'm starving!” Says Killian.
“Me too!” Sally replies exhausted from the intense play of musical chairs.
As the children head back to their seats, Mr. Ghoulea finishes passing out the little doughnuts and juice. Hungry and thirsty kids dig into their snacks. Needless do they know what is about to occur.
“I'm not hungry Ms. Graves. Just thirsty.”
“You must eat Mary.”
“No thank you Ms. Graves.”
“Yes, Mary eat.”
“OK.” Mary takes a bite of her powdered mini doughnut.
“Class, when you are finished eating and drinking Mr. Ghoulea will hand out the skeleton activity. Please do not do anything until I give you instructions.”
Mr. Ghoulea the Warlock positions a small candy filled coffin on each student's desk.
“Hey, it's candy!” shouts Emily.
“Look at these cool coffins.”
“Ya, Cassie. Look inside. There are skeleton pieces inside.” acknowledges Fred.
Mr. Ghoulea continues to hand out the little plastic coffins which contained interlocking skeleton pieces.
“I see everyone has their candy. Now the real fun begins.” Snarls Ms. Graves. “Listen and follow my directions carefully and completely. No one must eat the candy until I tell you to. This is a game. No one cheats. Right?”
“Right!” Says Rebecca. “Scott's the cheater in class Ms. Graves!”
“Oh, he won't cheat, will you Scott?” Ms. Graves accuses as she glares at Scott.
“Nnnnoo Ms. Graves.”
“Now boys and girls you may begin putting your skeleton pieces together. Remember you must join all twelve pieces carefully interlocking them tightly and completely.”
“Mr. Ghoulea would you walk around and see if anyone might need help?”
“Yes, Ms. Graves.”
Mr. Ghoulea looks a little intimidating in his Warlock costume. But the children love it.
“Hey Mr. Ghoulea can you do any magic? Questions a shy little Kayla.
“Why yes, I can Kayla. And so can Ms. Graves. You will see soon.”
“MR. GHOULEA, WOULD YOU COME HERE PLEASE?” Ms. Graves yells from across the room.
“What are you doing? The children must not know what is about to happen.” Whispers Ms. Graves. “Now go back and do what I told you to do. Make sure the kid's pieces are all interlocked, or the spell will not work. You know that. We cannot let even one child survive. Now go.”
Mr. Ghoulea signals back to Ms. Graves as he meanders through the classroom observing the students' progress.
Soon he announces, “the pupils are ready Ms. Graves.”
“Good, Good. OK class go ahead and eat your skeletons. Eat all of the candy.”
“No problem! This candy tastes great.” Bellowed Fred.
“This is like nothing I've ever tasted before.” Declared Bethany.
“Eat up boys and girls.” Commanded Ms. Graves.
“I don't feel so good.”
“Me either.”
“I'm sick.”
All the children began complaining.
“It's OK children. Those feelings will go away soon.”
“ACROMASHRINKA!” As the words spew from her mouth the children begin to shrink. The third graders quickly shrank to the size of the skeletons they just put together. Four inches to be exact.
“ACROMADISSOLVEA!” Instantly the tiny children began to dissolve into nothing but bones.
“Great spells my love. The doughnuts made them shrink and the juice made them dissolve. Excellent!”
“Oh, Look Albidorus my Warlock we have our Halloween candy for next year.”
“I see Daphonolia my darling you did it again.”
“Happy Halloween!” They squealed to each other in unison as they walked around the room placing the 'fresh' skeleton candy in the coffins and magically sealing them shut.

07/24/2024Hi Joel, I'm really happy you took the time to read my story. Someone a while back gave it a 1 star rating and left a terrible comment. JD deleted the comment but couldn't take away the 1 start rating. She put in a couple 5 start ratings to try and compensate for it. But I think it hurt my story because people tend to shy away from reading low rated stories. I don't understand why the person did that. Halloween stories are supposed to be gory, spooky and unpredictable. So again I'm grateful you read the story. Appreciate your kind comments. Thanks and many blessings to you. Shelly
Maybe you can tell others is not that bad.

10/15/2022Yes, I know Gail. I don't understand. Since I began writing and submitting stories, I've never received a one-star story. I didn't think it was that bad. Thank you for deciding to read it after seeing the one star. Plus, I don't get the word 'stinker'. I was quite taken back by this response. I hope other readers will take the time to read my story, comment and still leave a rating. Again, thank you so much Gail. I always appreciate your comments. Glad you enjoyed the story.
