The Job
Born 2011, F, from Noida/UP, IndiaOnce upon a time, there was a man named Frank. He led a nice life, with his loving and supportive parents, and a stable job. He worked as an accountant in a successful company. He loved his job a lot, and it gave him a decent amount of salary. “My god, I cannot believe it!” He said to himself, the day he got that job, after reading an email he had received about his acceptance to the office. “I am so delighted to see this! Oh, I know! I should immediately call up my parents to tell them! They have been waiting for so long! I should even throw a celebration party! After all, this is a really hard position to get into, especially in such a hotshot company like this!”
On the day of his party, he arranged everything as soon as he could, and invited everyone from his family! Sure enough, not one single person missed the party, and he was glad about that. However, what made him the most excited was seeing his parents there. “Mom, Dad! I finally did it! I got the job!” He excitedly said. “Congratulations, my dear! I’m very happy for you! Here, your father and I decided to give this to you as a little gift.” His mother said, handing him a leather suitcase. His dad smiled at him. “Son, keep this safe. I know it will make you look smart in the office!” Frank was overjoyed. “Thank you, mom and dad! I really appreciate this!”
On the first day of the job, he was really nervous, but immediately relaxed after getting a warm welcome from the office. “Welcome to the office, Frank! I’m Sam. We are in the same field! There’s your seat. As you would know, you’re going to work as an accountant here. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!” said Sam. Frank thanked him and quickly got to his seat, excited to begin working. “I’m glad the office is so friendly! But, I must remember to work hard here, if I want to keep my job. I shall work hard here, and not take unnecessary leaves!” Frank said to himself, full of confidence. He was determined to work hard. He did keep his promise, too. For 1 year, he had taken his job very seriously and never took a day off unnecessarily.
But, after completing that year, he saw that some time or another, all of his colleagues were getting a promotion. His friend Sam even got a promotion, and he became the boss of many teams! Even the newcomers were getting promotions! It seemed to Frank as if everyone was getting promoted left and right, while he was just stuck there, being an accountant. He was starting to get a little impatient about why he wasn’t getting a promotion too. But, he didn’t lose hope. He started working even harder, volunteering to work overtime and to pitch in with other work outside his field. He was sure that his extra efforts will make his boss realize that he should get promoted.
However, all his hard work seemed not to pay off. So, when another newcomer got a promotion after a month, he finally lost it. In a rage, he grabbed his computer and threw it away. Everyone turned to look at him. “I HATE YOU ALL!” he yelled angrily and sat down. His boss came outside his office to see what was going on. “What is all this commotion about?” she asked. “Boss, Frank is acting strange and is the reason for all the commotion.” The boss looked at Frank, who was sitting idle, looking angry. The boss nodded at Sam and asked Frank to come into her office.
The boss sat down in her chair, and Frank sat across from her. “So, Frank, would you like to explain why you disturbed the office in your fit of rage?” the boss asked in a serious tone. “Yes, boss. It was about my promotion. You see, it has been confusing for me to understand why everyone around me seems to be getting a promotion, especially since some of them have slacked off a lot, and I have always served this office humbly” Frank said, trying to keep his voice calm. The boss sighed and said, “Frank, look. I want to give you a promotion, but-” “But what? I can’t think of any reason why I shouldn’t possibly be getting a promotion! And now, I won’t waste my time begging for one. I quit!” Frank retorted and stormed out of the office. Everyone had been listening in on their conversation, and they all started talking nervously at the same time after Frank was gone.
When Frank got out of the office, he went straight home in his car. He checked his bank account. “Hmm. I have enough salary to get me by for at least the rest of the year. I shall not go back there ever again!”
A few weeks later, he sat down one day in his home, to watch Television. He turned on the news. Suddenly, he saw something that caught his eye. It was about the company he used to work in. “As you know, Lammer Corp., a company well known for its excellent services and its expertise in various fields, has been facing issues related to lack of employment. The boss of this branch, Michelle, has shared with us that due to the resignation of a certain Accountant manager known as Frank, has put the company in great jeopardy. The reason for Frank’s resignation was about him not getting a promotion, whereas other people in his same department were getting promotions. What he didn’t know was that, while his job may not have been of much significance to him, he was the sole person of the company to shoulder the other responsibilities of the other members of the company, and also the person who managed a lot of the work and was excellent in his field. Will Lammer Corp. somehow stabilize itself, or are we going to see the end of it?” The news anchor reported. Frank couldn’t believe his ears or eyes.
“So, while I was there thinking that my job wasn’t valued, is a job without which the company could go bankrupt? I must go to the company immediately to get back my job!” He exclaimed. He quickly got into his work clothes and got to the office. “M-Michelle! I need to… talk… to you!” he said, gasping for breath. Michelle quickly ushered him inside her office, and they both sat down.
“Michelle, I heard what happened in the news! As much as I used to hate my job, I have now found out how important it is! I have realized now that, the title of a job isn’t important, but the value of the job matters more. So, may I have my job back?” Frank asked. Michelle stood up and smiled, “Welcome back to the office, partner!” “Partner?” Frank asked. Michelle said, “Yes! Along with your job as the accountant, I’d like you to be the co-boss of this place! So, do you accept?” Frank was ecstatic. “Yes! It will be my honor!” Frank said, excited. After that, the company was no longer at risk of shutting down, and Frank was happy with his job, and the rest of the office too, was relieved and happy that they wouldn’t lose their jobs.
