The Howling
Born 1946, M, from PA, United StatesThe dog howls in the morning as the sun begins to rise,
and then at noon, begins to yelp. No longer a surprize.
From that point on he starts to keen, and whimper and to jerk.
And when his owners do arrive? That's when he goes berserk.
He seems to try to tell them that he doesn't feel too well.
As if he is describing his experiences in hell.
As if he wishes he could speak so he could full explain,
the deepness and the sorrows of his unrelenting pain.
His owners act as if he's only glad that they are home.
That nothing has affected him, because he's left alone.
Entire days of tedium. Entire years pass by.
Yet no one seems to notice how this doggie cries and cries.

Marla
12/01/2022This is so sad! The poor dog. It's interesting that I am reading this only a day after seeing a video that was about the intelligence of dogs.
They are certainly capable of experiencing the emotions you described.

12/02/2022I thought that they had given the dog away. But then I heard its muffled barking yelping whining and keening as if from a far distance. It seems as if they might have muzzled it and placed it as far away from their apartment's door as possible. Maybe in some closet? Again, what benefit they derive from having an obviously suffering animal who is constantly crying out for mercy in their apartment if far beyond me.

12/01/2022This breaks my heart. Our pets give us such pure unconditional love and then to be treated this way is unspeakable. Beautiful but sad poem Radrook

12/01/2022I too, Radrook, hope that the pup has found a new home with people who will love him as much as he gives love. He deserves a good home!

12/01/2022Thanks Shelly. Much appreciate your feedback. I totally agree. It definitely is heartbreaking and is a shameful behavior for humans. He is finally gone from the apartment across the hallway after approx. four months of constant yelping. I truly hope that they found a good home with caring owners for him as he deserves. Shame on them!

12/01/2022I think that is the saddest thing you ever wrote! The whole time I was thinking of a dog down the street that is tied outside in all kinds of weather. It sickens me that people are so cruel to animals! Se the emotion this story has brought out in me! Nice description in this poem.

12/01/2022Thanks Lilian. I appreciate your feedback. This has to be none of the most nerve-wracking experiences for me. Wanting to help and feeling angry at these people for not understanding this dog's desperation! I did call the proper authorities. Why they do such a thing is really beyond me.
