Destined
Born 1959, M, from Stoke, United KingdomI’m destined for greater things
Of this I can be sure
Ready for whatever this life brings
All I will endure
I will slay the dragon in his lair
Put the ghosts to rest
Rescue the damsel with long hair
And by bishops I’ll be blessed
The bards will all sing of my good deeds
They will write a book on me
I will ride into glory on my white steeds
And mine enemies will flee
I’ll do all this before the alarm rings
And blows my dreams away
Oh I’m destined for greater things
But maybe not today…
Destined(Tallisman)
I’m destined for greater things
Of this I can be sure
Ready for whatever this life brings
All I will endure
I will slay the dragon in his lair
Put the ghosts to rest
Rescue the damsel with long hair
And by bishops I’ll be blessed
The bards will all sing of my good deeds
They will write a book on me
I will ride into glory on my white steeds
And mine enemies will flee
I’ll do all this before the alarm rings
And blows my dreams away
Oh I’m destined for greater things
But maybe not today…

Help Us Understand What's Happening
Radrook
12/17/2022Nice poem! Thanks for sharing.
Love the way that the poem remains true to the very strict rhyming scheme of abab cdcd efef ghgh without using off-rhyme.
Also, love the conclusion which finally reveals the speaker's real mood.
I especially like the use of the enigmatic symbol of an alarm expected to bring the speaker suddenly back to a stark reality.
Not revealing what this alarm might be adds mystery to the poem. Is the alarm the speaker's own self-doubts? Or is the alarm something external, such as a classroom-change-signal that interrupts the student's daydreaming?
Is the hypothertical speaker merely being realistic by expecting the alarm? Or is the speaker expressing a lack of self-confidence and using hyperbole in expressing expectations in order to do so?
