My bones were stiff, my skin was dry as a crocodile. My vision blurred. I felt my body grow weaker; I could feel it dying.
“Please, please, I’m dying. I need the medicine to be merciful.'' I could barely gasp the words out.
“I’m sorry sir you can’t afford it, just be still and everything will be fine.” said a tall medic with dark eyes.
“Please please…uhg,” each word was like gasping for breath. I could hear an annoying beep which slightly started to slow down, when I looked up, I saw the medic and other four people staring down at me.
“It’s deadly, there is no chance for him to survive, and the medicine is too expensive for him to afford.” said the tall medic as he talked to the other four people who were probably my family, which I don't recognize anymore. “Take a nap sir, when you wake up everything will be alright.” Said the tall medic, he smirked at me and covered my body with a black cover. What? Was this it? All my life I had been struggling to survive, working on a job that I despised for money to survive. Then I met Dr.Merdic, he said he would pay me enough money to be set for life if I would be a subject in his experiment. I agreed, he wanted to find the cure for cancer. I had cancer since I was a little boy, but it had always been controlled and it never gravely affected me but when I drank his experiment things went wrong. Cancer hit me worse than ever, and it started killing me fast. I went to the only hospital in which I knew they had found a way to keep cancer at bay, they told me I couldn’t afford it and just like that they were leaving me for dead. I felt cold, and weak, and all I could see was the dark plastic sheet covering my body. What next, was I just going to die now? It felt wrong as if this was not supposed to happen. Suddenly I could hear my own heart beat grow slower, until I heard nothing, not one single beat. All I could see was the dark void, then there was a dim light which came closer and closer. And when I felt I could almost reach the light, I was pushed back. The light got farther and farther away and then, gasp.
I was sitting on the hospital bed feeling strong, stronger than I've ever felt. My body radiated power, there was some sort of shine on my skin. I could feel gravity fail and with a little push I was floating above the bed. Somehow I was alive, I guess it was just not my time to die. I turned around and saw the medics looking at me with their mouths dropped all the way to the floor, they couldn’t stop stammering.
“You left me for dead, and now I'm some sort of… being,” I told them while I was exploring my hands as if they were something new. They start backing up slowly. I wanted to destroy them, I wanted to show them what it felt like to be left for dead. They were medics whose jobs were to save people no matter the cost, but all they cared about was money. They were willing to let me die just because I was not able to pay them. Was life really worth so little, if it was, could I just end theirs? After all, they deserved it. But if I killed them, would I be just as bad? Would I be brought down to their level? Is ending their lives actually worth it? Surely, I could make sure no one makes their mistake ever again. I look deep into their eyes; they clearly see that their life could end here and now. What should l do? Would revenge make me real better or would it haunt me in future? Would I regret my actions later on? I take a deep breath raise my fists open my mouth and say,
“The most dangerous thing to want is more. Greed is like filling a cup with a hole at the bottom: it will never fill”. I take one last glance at their shocked faces and burst through the roof as if it were made of air. Bricks flying all over the place and crashing down onto the floor. I push upwards into the air until I am so high that I can look down and see all of San Francisco, and every single person looks like a toy in someone’s game, so insignificant. I take a deep breath and admire the view for a while. I start soaring through the air like a bird, alive and free. I start going faster and faster until I can barely see because of the wind on my face. I see in the distance a small island. I start to slow down until I am simply floating above the island. I start to go down and I land on the soft sand which cuddles my toes. I look up and see palm trees filled with coconuts, bushes filled with roses of all colors and fruits. I walk for a few minutes until I reach the edge of the island where I find a small village. I see little houses made out of thick branches and stones. The people don't even seem to notice I have arrived, they are all busy doing their thing. The villagers are planting, or fishing, or simply walking around and talking with their loved ones. Then I saw a girl who was probably around 24 years old. She had brown dark hair and tan skin. She is wearing a lovely woven dress and she has a yellow rose in her hair. I suddenly lock eyes with her, and she gives me a warm smile and I smile back. A spark inside me starts to burn, I feel like I have a bonfire inside. I was finally where I was supposed to be, all my life had been a race on the wrong track and I had
finally found my path, and it was here, with her and somehow, she knew that too.
