The Dragon Of Glad And Blad
It was a dark time in history. No one wanted much of what the world had to offer. The streets were full of beggars and merchants just trying to find a way out of their miserable existence. Two of those beggars were Glad and Blad. An odd pair but they worked. Friends in all truth, but brothers at heart.
It wasn't until they got home one morning on a cold, rainy day that they too began to feel as though all hope was lost. Would they ever get out of this mess? The roof leaked, the walls cracked, and the yard smelled of rotting flesh. Glad looked around for a bowl to catch the water when he caught a glimpse of something, or someone, moving in the shadows.
"Who's there?" he called,"show yourself!"
"Please don't hurt me. They killed my father. I have no one left, and I just wanted to get out of the rain," said a sad, high pitched voice. The unfamiliar voice was enough to gather the attention of Blad who quickly came over.
"We won't hurt you as long as you don't hurt us! Now come on out!" Blad said rather gruffly.
The young creature slowly inched forward. When it came into the sunlight, that had only just begun to peer through the window, Glad and Blad came to a stop. The creature was none other than the Winter Stone Dragon's son. They stood there in shock, unable to move. It was several minutes before they were finally able to process the event. As Blad went to turn around he caught a glimpse of light reflecting off the dragon's neck. When he went to take a closer look he noticed it was a gold necklace with a tag. The tag read "Syraxus Son of the Winter Stone Dragon ''. He looked at the young dragon who was shaking in fear. He paused for a moment to consider his options. Should he take it to the market and attempt to sell it? Or, should he keep it and try his best to protect it?
"Follow me," said Glad as he opened the door and motioned for Blad, and Syraxus to leave.
"We are going to take you to the king, young dragon."
"But he will kill me." Syraxus said in a trembling voice.
"Well so be it! We can not afford to take care of ourselves much less you. The king will give us a reward for you. I am sure of it! Now be quiet and follow me dragon."
" My name is Syraxus, and you can feel free to call me that! You may take me to the castle, but hear me when I tell you this. You can try, and you can try to give me over to that king but you will never succeed. The king will think you are helping me escape and making a fool out of him.Now that is where my fun will come in, I will get to watch you hang." Syraxus responded with a smirk.
The cold response sent chills down Blad's back. As they approached the castle the thought began to loom in the back of both Blad’s and Glad's head. They wondered if Syraxus could be right. Would he really end up getting hanged? Glad stopped at the castle doors, took a look at Syraxus and decided it was worth the risk.
" You can run before we get inside the castle walls, and you have wings you can fly, '' Blad whispered to Syraxus.
"No thank you. I have a score to settle with Glad"
"What score?"
"You see, I was just a hatchling when my mother was killed. I will never forget the look on her face as she took her last breath. She was killed by none other than your friend Glad."
Blad stopped unsure of what to do. As he stood there pondering the events that were just told to him a guard yelled at him to get going.
"Just know I had no part in that. I will try my best to help you escape." Blad whispered before moving on into the throne room. Little did Blad know Syraxus would not need his help. Syraxus pondered this back and forth in his head for several minutes. He knew what he needed to do. As Glad and the king began to converse he jumped in front of Glad. He looked the king in the eye and let out a great roar of fire, scorching the king and his guards. Syraxus took to the air with his majestic wings and went over to Blad who was standing towards the door
of the throne room, and picked him up with his strong front feet. Syraxus looked quickly for a way out, and there it was. An open window about five feet above the king's throne. He bolted to the window but stopped just before exiting. He turned to look at Glad.
"Hey, you were right, that was funny. The king sure does look like a fool. Good idea, Glad!"
Syraxus says before he turns and flies away into the sky. The king was furious and ordered Glad to be hung at dawn. When dawn came the castle court yard was full of commoners ready to watch the execution. As they slipped the rope around Glad's neck, he caught a glimpse of something on the castle
wall. It was Syraxus, with his usual smirk on his face. Glad was outraged.
" You did this. This is all- '' Glad screamed but abruptly stopped when he heard the sound of the rope tightening around his neck, and with one kick of a barrel out from underneath his feet it was all over. The kingdom, though mighty as it was, never recovered to its former glory. Instead it seeped into bitter despair and went up in a burning tongue of flames.
