The Sanders Brothers
Born 1950, M, from Sparta, il, United StatesThe Sanders brothers found Langley a few miles outside Coleman, Texas recovering from his near-death encounter. The brothers, like Langley, were on the run from the law. They had robbed the Brownwood, Texas bank three days before they met up with Langley. The posse, they figured, was at least a half day behind them and catching up.
Langley saw the brothers ride toward him. He had ridden with them in the past and judging by the way they were riding; trouble was not far behind them. Perhaps, he thought, he could talk them into going north with him. If they stop? It could make the trip to Wyoming more profitable.
“You don’t look to good, Langley!” Jim Sanders said. “Who’s that swingin’ in the tree?”
“Cullen Barker. If it hadn’t been for a stray bullet, you would of found me swingin’ to. What are you runnin’ from?”
“There’s a posse from Brownwood about a half day behind us. Maybe closer.” Dick Sanders volunteered.
“There’s a vigilante from Coleman about two hours from here, I’m guessin’.” Langley added. They’re the ones that left me here. They probably think I’m still swingin.”
“Now that you ain’t swingin’, you got a plan?” asked Jim Sanders.
“I hear there’s gold in Wyoming. I plan to check it out.”
“Any objection to us ridin’ with ya? With that posse and those vigilantes around, might be better if we rode together. Besides, if there is gold like you say in Wyoming, they gotta’ put it some place, right? Might be easy pickins’?” Dick offered. “Besides, you’re good with a gun. That could come in handy.”
“I wouldn’t mind the company. At least I’d have someone to talk to other than my horse, which by the way is around here somewhere. Jack Parsons has my Dance .44. He thought when he hung me, he wouldn’t have to worry about returning it. I plan to get it back from him someday.”
After rounding up Langley’s stolen horse, the three rode off together toward Cheyenne. With the law closing in, there was no time to see to Barker. They figured the Brownwood posse would take care of that.
