The Best Souls

The Best Souls
By Herm Sherwood-Sitts

After my son got off of work, we went to Wal-Mart and bought a 24 hr Michigan fishing license and some cheap gear. ( We are from NY) The weather was wind, snow and freezing cold. We had a charter set up for the next day (depending on the weather). While coming outta’ the lobby of the Double Tree, Rube told the desk clerk “wish us luck!”

She smiled and said “You guys are friggin nuts!”

We fished under a bridge for a while. We had bought some chicken liver and thought maybe we could entice a catfish. After a while a man came by walking a dog. We chatted about fishing and he told us that he had some luck down the other way by a big sail boat.

When we arrived the snow was a blowing . I said to Rube “Is that another fisherman over there?” By now it was dark except for the lights along the walk way. Sure enough it was. I went over to talk to him and he said ”Glad to see I am not the only dumb ass out here fishing.” We bonded quickly and he shared some tackle and minnows with us. Rube caught a small Walleye and we fished for about an hour. We returned the tackle and what minnows we had left, thanked him, shook hands and went to get warmed up and a bite to eat.

We love to meet people fishing… they seem to have the best souls.

Oh Herm, Michigan winters are so cold! I love to fish but I draw the line at 50 degrees. You are much more the fisherman than I am! Hats off to you and your son! Congratulations on short story star of the daty!

Herm, the Hindu greeting, "Namaste" roughly translates to " the devine in me recognizes the divide in you." Your tale reminded me to always try to see that. Thanks, grg
