Bye for now...
Born 1951, M, from Wilmington NC, United StatesGoodbye StoryStar. Or should I say, so long until we meet again?
I have had a wonderful journey on StoryStar. When I first discovered this lovely gathering of talented folks with a tale (or two!) to tell, I was overjoyed with a chance to express myself. Little did I know I would spend almost a decade reading the writings of folks who have become, if not friends, at least treasured acquaintances. You will be missed.
I started with a very simple goal…publish a short story. And…I did. Then I thought: “Maybe I could write ten short stories. That would be cool.” And…I did. As you can imagine, it didn’t take long to set a much more difficult goal: 100 stories. And…I did. Some were Science Fiction Stories, some were kind of Romantic, others were pure Fantasy. Some were based on “true” events, blurring the lines between Fiction and Life. Others had a Western theme, or a “First Contact” vibe. A few, a very few, were actual stories from my very own life.
Perhaps memory and time rounded out the corners of those stories, so much so that they have little relationship to actual events. My first kiss, my first love, time in the Military or traveling, all of those stories carry bits and pieces of my history. I tend to weave them into my stories too. I have a very weird writing style. I don’t proofread (bad, Kevin, bad!). I rarely edit (worse, Kevin, worse!) and I have no idea what I am going to write about until I sit down at the keyboard (WTF?, Kevin.) It works for me. A single line, sometimes…a single word, would blow up into a full fledged story, complete with plot, characters, and (usually) a happy ending. Voila!
After 100 Stories, I tried for 200 Stories. Then 300. Then, when I reached the milestone of 500 stories (Five hundred! Yikes.) I teasingly said to JD:
“Maybe I should try for six hundred stories.”
To which she replied:
“Kevin, I hope you write a thousand stories.”
Something clicked in my brain- a thousand stories? 1,000 stories? Well…okay. Let’s do that. And …I did.
Then 1,100 Stories. Then…1,200 stories. One thousand two hundred stories. That, as my old friend used to say: “is a hunk a hunk of stories.” He made me laugh. It is a “hunk a hunk of stories.” So I wrote one more. And stopped. Now…I am writing this one. My last “Story.” It could easily have taken shape as a “Love Story.” For I truly loved writing for StoryStar. I loved reading Authors from all over the World.
On that note, let me just say this about that: all of you ESL folks leave me in awe at your command of my Native language. Writing in English, as your second, third or even fourth language, is mind boggling to someone who is monolingual (like me). Your grammar is stunningly accurate, your word choice, your “voice” and the themes most ESL folks wrap their stories around, all are testimonies to how diligent your studies must have been. Bravo!
I have gained insight into many cultures, customs, and codes because of the way ESL folks think…and write. I have learned history and folklore that enabled me to get a glimpse into cultures I will never be lucky enough to visit. Even something as simple as names. Yes, names. In my country (USA) we have many common names: Bob, James, Tom, Steve, Linda, Heather, Harper, Jane…dozens of them, and last names too: Smith, Johnson, Williams, Jones…et all.
To find out that other Cultures have names that are just as common in their Land…and I have never heard of at all, was a joy to discover. In some Cultures the Name is very important. In others, it is Traditional. In others, it is unique to just that one life. Hints of popular foods, cooking styles, and Social Mores while eating …all are on display in these stories. I loved that too.
Now, I have set another challenge. I want to write a Novel. Yeah, I know, that is a massive goal. Especially at my age. I have often been told that some of my stories should be expanded into at least a Novella- if not a full fledged Novel. I was afraid to try. Yep. Many of us Writers are afraid to tell the story we really want to tell. We hint at the possibilities in our Short Stories, or our Flash Fiction, but we keep that book under wraps.
It is a daunting task to lay down a hundred thousand words (give or take twenty thousand) that make sense. To develop a character that can survive three hundred pages and come out more fully rounded than when we first met them earlier in the book. A story that keeps the Reader’s interest (and attention) for all those chapters…that is truly a formidable hurdle. I was afraid of it for a long time. Not now.
I want to write a book. A book unlike any of my Short Stories…so whatever my book turns out to be, it will not be an expanded story I already wrote. No, sir. It will be a “clean sheet” effort. I have no idea what it will even be about. I haven’t started on it yet. I am just clearing my mind of the “Short Story” mindset that allowed me to crank out stories like an old style mimeograph machine. Turn the handle of my imagination and out pops another short story- or several. Sometimes I published as many as three stories in a day…other times I could barely manage three stories in a week. But that kind of churning out ideas has to stop …if I want to write a Novel. And…I do.
So farewell my StoryStar friends. Perhaps I will check in every now and again, to browse some stories, or read some of my favorite Authors. Then again, maybe I won’t. Perhaps my Novel will take all my time and energy. If so…I will check in when it is done. Wish me luck. I already had my share of luck when I met StoryStar, JD, and all of you.
I wish you all well. Continue to write, continue to explore your stories…and tell them. Have fun. I did.
Aloha, Kevin Hughes

04/07/2023I was wondering where you were. Congrats on all your tales and best wishes with the book. Mine took years at 70+K words. Given your output, I expect you'll be done in a week or two. Write on!

04/08/2023I understand. A couple of quick thoughts...I came at it not only by sitting down and letting it come out, but always had a note pad with me in my pocket and in my car. Random thoughts come--some very good, but for me, often to be forgotten. Later when entering the notes into a draft, the piece begins to take on a life of its own. Also, I bought an audio recorder (these days one can use your phone with the Docs app), in both cases you can speak in things that come while you're taking a walk for example. You can then transfer the Doc and expand it on your computer. The audio recorder will require Dragon Nuance soft ware. Well worth it, Dawg. Not only can you transfer your recording to text, but you can sit in front of your computer and speak the story into a document. PLUS, you can listen back and see how it sounds. Good stuff, man. Just sayin'. Oh yeah, my book is nonfiction, a memoir: Marching to a Silent Tune: a Journey from We Shall to Hell No. You may wish to let your peace freak, tree lovin' hippie contacts know about it. Peace. grg

04/08/2023Happy Easter Gerald!
Wow, congrats on having finished a Novel. Mine is starting out ...well...not so good. I naively thought because I can churn out ShortStories almost daily, that I would have my Novel done in three months. Not so. Sigh.
I had to discard my original Idea because I realized it was a common trope in three movies I watched, just a different causative scenario. So that one bit the dust. The next idea I had, the research became overwhelming. I was spending five hours a day, just to get a basic grasp of what the story needed for background. So that one bit the dust too.
Then my third Idea I had to put in the circular file because it was trending towards dystopia. And the world has enough bad endings without me adding one. So now, well, I think I am going to write a love story. And leaves me in a quandary in how to disguise some of the Real Life events as Fiction. I don't want folks getting mad at me sixty years later. LOL
Okay, off to think some more. LOL

04/06/2023Thank you for being that support for me when I was just a kid with my imagination, many years ago Kevin!! Your encouragement has fostered my imagination for years and years and I get to put it to work in college now. I wish you so much luck on your novel!! If anyone can write something that I know for a fact will be amazing, it's you. 1,200 stories is a hell of a milestone and I'm quite proud to have gotten your advice and read some of your short stories. Hopefully we can interact again in the future! When your novel comes out I will be here to read it 1000%. :)

04/09/2023That is a well rounded college schedule you set yourself up for. Good on you. Psychology has branched off into a lot of brain science and neurotransmitter studies to go along with the behavioral and social structures. I remember a Scientist named Candice Pert, who wrote a wonderful book about the early studies of endorphins. She has one of my favorite quotes:
"Behind every crooked thought, is a crooked molecule."
Even Freud thought that eventually psychology would eventually morph into the study of brain chemicals. Pretty forward thinking for a guy in the early 19th century. And Art has many links to Mental Health, both in diagnosis, and therapy. So you will have a heck of a tool kit when you finish your studies. As if studies are ever finishes. LOL
Good luck, Happy Easter, and keep that GPA to the left of the decimal!

04/08/2023I am majoring in psychology and minoring in art and communication studies (haha! Of course the arts is in there). Thank you for your wise words. I hope to take a writing class at some point, just for fun. I miss writing! I'll just have to sit down at some point and start typing. I hope your novel is treating you well. You got this! Happy Easter.

04/06/2023Oh, my, gosh, Hannah! In college?! Way to go girl! (The Nuns would have killed me for using three straight exclamation marks...they thought just one in six hundred pages "diluted" the message.LOL) So which of your many talents is your Major? Art? Literature? Theater? Or one of the Sciences?
I wish you the very best at school. Celebrate each and ever Class you finish. Even if it is just a slice of pizza with your friends. Each Class is important, and if you don't celebrate them as they happen, you end up with a degree that doesn't seem to mean anything. Every bit of Education counts. And that includes learning from the people around you.
I have no doubt that you will grow and learn in ways nobody could predict, but you have an arsenal of talents and imagination to draw on. Just keep being you...and all will be well. Novels, it turns out, are much harder for me to write than short stories. So it might be a while until you get to read it. LOL
Smiles, and have a great year at school! (Oh, dear, another exclamation point!) LOL
Happy Easter. Kevin

03/07/2023Aloha Maria,
Thanks for the kind words! I am hard at work at the Novel. But boy oh boy, is it a challenge. The research is a bit daunting, but knowing how much you have to know, to not include in the book, is mind boggling.
I have been reading a lot of Fiction lately to get a handle on how other Author's put their books together. I don't read the story as much as look for the structure and technical aspects of the writing itself. I may have bitten off more than I can chew. LOL
I will let everyone know when I finish it.

03/02/2023Hi Kevin. I've just seen this post. As we say in the UK, i'm gutted mate.. Firstly, it's been nice knowing you on here. I've really enjoyed your stories and communicating with you on here. Good luck with the novel! It will be a shame you won't be on StoryStar but I'm sure you'll do so well with the novel. Take care, Chris.

03/02/2023Thank you CPlatt for the kind words. Turns out, writing a Novel is not easy...at least for me. So it is stretching my Writing muscles to their limit. I have started with fits and starts, and my appreciation for folks like: Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, and George Martin, who can churn out massive tomes is growing exponentially.
I think I have a sound enough premise to support three or four hundred pages, but as they say: "The Devil is in the details. " Just the research alone is taking up several hours a day...and that stuff won't even make it into the book! LOL
You take care buddy, and as my British friends say:
Cheers!

02/16/2023Wait...what!? What do you mean "at my age"? Kevin, don't cha know you're timeless? You and your stories are seen and remembered and will be for a long, long time. Though I agree with JD that short stories are where it's at, I can't help but believe that you will write your book and be very happy with it. Your writing style is precious. Deep. Positive. We wish you the very best, bruh. Peace and love

02/14/2023It is good that you are carefully pondering what to write before investing time. I didn't and paid the price. I once wrote a novella, 48,000 words. After I had written the last word, and started to relax triumphantly, I suddenly noticed that the theme contained a certain prominent detail that I didn't feel religiously comfortable with. Why that epiphany had to descent on me at the end of the novella, I don't know. But it did teach me to think the novella themes over very carefully so it wouldn't happen again. Actually, it happened to me twice and for the same reason. I guess the third will have to be the charm if I ever attempt another.

02/13/2023Of course u are welcome here anytime, Kevin, whether u r sharing stories or not, writing them or not. Please let it be a 'till we meet again' and not a 'goodbye'. Or rather an aloha, which is always a till we meet again.... I hope that u have fun writing your novel, but don't let it get frustrating for you. i know you've said many times that writing novels isn't for u. so if u find that to be true as u actually tackle the job, don't beat yourself up about it, because short stories are WAY better than novels anyway. i'm biased of course. You are the master of short stories, and you have created an incredible legacy here on storystar for readers to discover and enjoy for years to come. u have every right to call it 'done' and focus on something else, resting on the laurels you've earned. but if u ever get the urge or inspiration to write a quickie, u know where to share it. you'll always be WELCOME here. take care, Kevin. THANK YOU for all the outstanding stories you've shared with us.
