KNOT
I worked for the Rocking R Ranch in the summer of 86. I owned my own mount and rig so I was pretty well set to go. All the guys in the bunkhouse seemed like a friendly enough bunch of fellers so I didn’t see me having any sort of trouble outa anyone. This would be an experience that I would not soon forget.

Well, there was this here feller they called Knot. No one seemed to know where he got his nickname. Not even Knot. Knot seemed to be the butt of everybody’s jokes. Knot always took it in great stride and laughed it off. I ask’em one day why he always let’em fun’em like that. He just said that it gave the guys a chance to let off some steam. He said besides, I kinda like the funnin.

One day all the ranch hands were to get together and clean out the big stable. When we all gathered I noticed Everett, the Crew Boss going around and whispering something in everyone’s ear. When he got to me he leaned in and whispered, when you see me take off runnin, you take off runnin to as fast as you can. Well, I said OK boss. So we all started working and shoveling muck and pitching hay and cleaning out the big stable.

It wasn’t too long when Knot finally came wandering into the stable to start helping. He picked up some tools and went over and started mucking out a stall. That’s when Everett took off at full speed out the stable door. As Everett ran out, the rest of the crew fell in behind him running as fast as they could. That's when we looked over and saw old Knot running past everyone hollerin, WHAT IS IT, WHAT IS IT.
