April 27th, 2023: (Grass)

The needle-like blades of grass prickle my skin with each step I take toward the treehouse. Grinning to conceal the pain, I look back to see Kaden catching up to me.

“Sidney! Slow down! You know I- can’t run that fast!” He shouts breathing heavily.

“Come on slowpoke!” I smirk.

Taking one big leap I catch the rope dangling from the tire swing planting my feet in the inner tube. Letting the sun scatter its radiance upon my pale freckled face.

“Ugh- I wanted to ride the tire swing,” Kaden mumbles loud enough for me to hear.

I wait a few seconds before saying, “Alright you can have it you big baby,” while jumping off and landing in the shade of the big white oak.

Lying underneath the tree my eyes catch sight of the bright and fluffy clouds looming over us. The sky, just like a painting, is a perfect meld of colors from blue to orange. The wind tickles the leaves creating that inexpressive feeling of tranquility.

“Watchu, smiling at?” Kaden asks while pushing himself back and forth on the makeshift swing, his hair glittering in the light.

“Today is just such a beautiful day,” I tell him while gently closing my eyes and listening to the chirps and tweets of the birds above.

Taking a deep breath I exhale, satisfied with the fresh air. I silently get up and begin to climb up the ladder to the treehouse. The creaks and groans of the wood are not a problem as the view knocks out the air from my lungs.

Gasping I take in the hundreds of sunflower fields radiating brightly towards the golden blazing sun. I spot my neighbors laughing joyfully with one another telling stories and jokes while harvesting the flowers. This peaceful moment is interrupted by Kaden as he calls my name from below.

“Sidney! You’re mom’s calling you! You better hurry up!”

“-Oh! Coming!” I rush down the ladder and leap toward him while brushing off my overalls of any stains of grass.

Kaden squints looking far into the distance and muttering, “Tch. I really need to get some glasses”

“KIDS! YOU HEAR ME? DINNERTIME!” My mom hollers while ringing the bell.

“Let’s go!” I exclaim while grabbing Kaden’s hand while bolting as fast as we could.
The Cardinals flying high in the vast sky gives me a sense of freedom and I cherish it for as long as I can.
