I'm Okay
Born 1929, M, from Roseville/CA, United States2023I’mOK (Approx. 300 wds.)
I’m Okay
It was a cold dreary day in his Northern California retirement community. Paul Lerner, a very senior citizen, finished his breakfast. He put the dishes away. The house was quiet and empty. He still couldn’t believe that his wife was gone and he was left. He dressed and made his weekly call to his sister in New York. She had been having some health issues. She was seeing her doctor the next week. She asked him how he was doing. He said he was OK.
It was lunchtime. Paul made himself a sandwich. He ate it while watching a news program on television. The news was as usual bad. Paul was doing some stuff on his computer when the phone rang. It wasn’t a robocall. It was his friend Mike.
Mike was a few years younger than Paul and still pretty active. He asked Paul if he’d like to go to a meeting of some club in their retirement community. Paul said No. He asked Paul if he wanted to see some play or other the Drama Club was putting on. Paul said No. He and Paul made a date to have lunch at their retirement community’s restaurant the next week. He asked Paul how he was doing. Paul said he was doing OK.
Paul heated a TV dinner for his supper. He watched a little television. The phone rang. It was his son who lived in San Francisco. They talked a while about his son’s job and what Paul’s grandson and granddaughter were doing. His son said he’d try to get up to see him one weekend. Paul said that would be fine. His son asked how he was doing. Paul said he was doing OK.
Paul went back to the TV program but he wasn’t really watching it. He looked at his watch. It was nine o’clock. Another two hours left before going to bed. How was he doing? No, he wasn’t doing OK. He didn’t think he’d be doing OK for a long time, maybe never.
